I'm currently feelin: excited excited

My most amazing religion professor gave me the greatest minute of my entire academic career today:

"You know, U2 is one of the most subtly religious bands out there. Many people do not recognize the hidden religious references in their songs. Take a great song like 40, which refers to Psalm 40. Until The End Of The World is about Judas betraying Jesus. Their latest album has a song called Yahweh. It's about God. You have the lyrics, Take these shoes, Take these hands, Take this mouth... it's about God.. Yahweh! Something else people might not notice is that the last song on each of their albums contains a religious reference. Take their last album, the song Grace. Many people think it's about a girl named Grace... but it isn't! I like U2."

While I completely agree with your professor, I would like to point out that there is nothing subtle about the song Yahweh, as it is a common name for God. He sould have not included that song in the point he was trying to make. He could have started with that song, then expanding by saying that U2 have more subtly religious songs. Also, by referring to ATYCLB as their last album, that would mean that it is their most recent album. And we all know that is incorrect.

But, I am sorry for ranting. Who am I to correct one's grammar? Hehe.

I'm not convinced there's a religious reference in the last song of *every* U2 album, either. ;)

It's very cool anyway though!

Haha, I know, I did not think that a subtle example. Unless he was trying to make the point that few people are into their religions these days and don't even realize that the term Yahweh means God.

At least the way I understand things, I distinguish between their "last" and their "latest" albums.

And I'm not sure about the last song on every album either, but there are many good examples, I guess.

I know why you distinguish between "last" and "latest". That's me just being grammatically anal.

(accept my apology??)

Keep in mind that someone in this very group asked what or who Yahweh was when the album came out ...

I'm sure of it. I didn't say that every single human being on the planet knows the term Yahweh. I just said that it is a common term for "god" and that the title is more religiously suggestive than, let's say, 40 or Grace.

Cool prof!

This is another reason my U2 fandom is more than just the music - they inspire me spiritually. The Lord has taught me a lot through them. :^)

Heh...that's like the one aspect of U2 that kinda bugs me, at least when they sing something like "Yahweh." But at least your prof has good taste. :)

I kinda think "All Because Of You" is about God too.

Totally - "All because of you, I Am".
(Even though I'd rather read it in a non-religious way because I'm not religious, hehe.)

Over half their songs are about God (and I'm being conservative). Some are more subtle, i.e. With or Without You or Falling at Your Feet, some aren't - i.e. any of the Judas songs, or Yahweh (although a member of this very group didn't know what Yahweh was). But in my opinion, their lyrics, no matter what one may think of them, are what differentiate them from other bands that happen to have good mechanics but no soul.

i just had to say... as i was reading your Yaweh lyrics, Bono was singing them at me.
*smirks*
Unusual, because I usually skip over this song.

I haven't had a prof reference U2 yet, but just a week or two ago I started talking about Miss Sarajevo in conjunction with a reading we had done...

That's really awesome. I love it when professors are able to work things that I know about from other areas of my life into their lectures, especially U2. :) The coolest professor U2-related thing I had was when my roommate showed my her Chemistry syllabus, which concluded with a giant paragraph about why The Joshua Tree is the greatest album of all time. ;) I almost took Chemistry, just for that.
