I agree, John Lennon penned songs are in a class all their own, and maybe next time someone decides to cover or perform one they will have singers who actually know the words and can match them with the beat of the song. Not that Bono and Stevie didn't. Or Aleisha Keys for that matter.

eh... i felt the same way. when the song was announced i say outloud for all in the house to hear, "oh dear god no! any song but that song. they can't do that." i almost started crying just realizing that they would forever ruin it for me.
(and it's funny because my favorite version of across the universe is from the i am sam soundtrack w/ rufus wainwright singing it.. but whatever.. I'M NOT A HYPOCRITE!)
and of course, bono is not included in that.

You're not a hypocrite - Rufus's voice just marries that song beautifully. Tonight's tribute just involved too many voices and styles at once (as much as they were trying to symbolically unite through various genres of music). I love Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and Billie Joe Armstrong but damn, they were not right for that song. It definitely takes a particular voice to carry a Beatles song well.
