Bono does not want World Bank post
After mounting media speculation that U2 frontman Bono was a contender for the post of head of the World Bank, it has been announced that the singer isn't interested in the job.
"I can't believe I need to say this, but there are no circumstances in which Bono would be nominated or accept the World Bank job," said Jamie Drummond, executive director of DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), for which Bono is a campaigner.
"Bono is flattered to be mentioned for such an important job but DATA does its best work from the outside," added Drummond.
The Los Angeles Times had suggested in an editorial that Bono would be a credible candidate for the job.
The story then gathered momentum when US Treasury Secretary John Snow said he admired the singer.
But Snow also added that the job would go to an American.
