Hello Hello!!

March 19th, 2005

To take the sting off of all the ticket disappointment posts... @ 11:12 am

mangoprophetess:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Beautiful Day (Live @ the '01 Brit Awards)

I woke up this morning w/ "God, Part II" in head. I Googled the song to see the real lyrics (as opposed to the ones I have just made up over the years...), and I'm curious about some of the references. Now, the fact I don't know them could be that I'm just dense and not realizing or I was too young (5) in 1988 to remember what exactly they are talking about.

Anyway,
Don't believe the devil
I don't believe his book
But the truth is not the same
Without the lies he made up.
Don't believe in excess
Success is to give
Don't believe in riches
But you should see where I live.
I, I believe in love.

Don't believe in forced entry
Don't believe in rape
But every time she passes by
Wild thoughts escape.
Don't believe in Death Row
Skid row or the gangs.
Don't believe in the Uzi
It just went off in my hands.
I, I believe in love.

Don't believe in cocaine
Got a speedball in my head
I could cut and crack you open
Did you hear what I said?
Don't believe them when they tell me
There ain't no cure.
The rich stay healthy
The sick stay poor.
I, I believe in love.

Don't believe in Goldman --> who is Goldman?
His type like a curse
Instant karma's gonna get him
If I don't get him first.
Don't believe that Rock 'n' Roll
Can really change the world
As it spins in revolution
Yeah, it spirals and turns.
I, I believe in love.

Don't believe in the sixties
The golden age of pop
You glorify the past
When the future dries up.
Heard a singer on the radio --> Does anyone know who that is?
Late last night
Says he's gonna kick the darkness
Till it bleeds daylight.
I, I believe in love.

Feel like I'm fallin'
I'm spinnin' on a wheel
It always stops beside a name
A presence I can feel.
I believe in love.
Stop!

I believe there is a book out that goes into the meaning of the songs. I have the book, but cannot remember the name of it (I'm at work, otherwise I'd go find it).

I think it might be called "Into The Heart", but yeah...great book.

Yeah, I've seen it at work (just like Clementine in Eternal Sunshine, I'm a Book Slave at B&N), but I've never paged through it.

By the by, do you know when it was published? Just curious as to how far through their career it spans. Thanks!

At the time I bought it, I think it went through POP.

After ATYCLB was released, I saw a revised version of the book that went through that album as well.

We'll prolly see another pretty soon going through HTDAAB.

That's a Canadian, Bruce Cockburn, a song called "Lovers in a Dangerous Time." It was covered in 1992 by the Barenaked Ladies (another Canadian band) and was a huge hit.

If you're going to download it, download the Barenaked Ladies version. I think it's much better :)

I also think Goldman is referring to Albert Goldman, who wrote a book basically insulting John Lennon:

Well, it would make sense in context w/ the rest of the verse. But my morbid sense of humor is tickled that Bono would get so worked up over that book. I guess we all have our heroes that people just can't insult, lest we flip. ;)

Back in the day, people were losing their fricking MINDS over that book. I was a teenager and I wasn't into the Beatles and I never deified Lennon the way a lot of people do so I kind of got a wry amusement out of it, but holy SHIT did the "next generation back" get upset. He hadn't been dead all that long at that time, remember as well.

Yeah, that's true. We have the distance now to look back on it. I was raised on the Beatles, but he was killed three years before I was even born. Still, I would take that as he was *trying* to get people to flip out. Some people just get this emotional rush from pissing people off for no real reason, and that was the intention of Goldman with that book, as least from where I sit. Though, my seat's a pretty cynical one to begin with...

Also, Goldman's book figured fairly heavily into Mark Chapman (John's assassin)'s delusional thinking that ultimately led to the assassination. Chapman gave an interview many years ago - roughly concurrent with when R&H was recorded - where he mentioned Goldman's book as planting the seed that John was a "phony" and thus (in Chapman's unbalanced world) should be killed to "expose" his phoniness.

I know the singer is Bruce Cockburn - a Canadian singer/songwriter/folkesy fellow. The song is "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" (which the Barenaked Ladies did a great cover of - also a Canadian band).
