Song of The Day @ 10:04 am

hue126:
I'm currently feelin: cold cold
I'm currently hearin: R.E.M., "Sweetness Follows"

Today's selection is

"The Unforgettable Fire" from The Unforgettable Fire (1984)

Thoughts: Oh, what a beautiful, soulful song this one is. The nice little detail in the song are the little breaths that come along with the accompianment. Adds a sort of urgency and passion to the entire song. There's a sadness that takes hold of the verses in the song and then Bono jumps into some semblance of optimism in the chorus. I love how light the guitar is as it is opposed by the hard synthesizer rhythm. The guitar feels like it's floating in mid-air and the synthesizer seems to bring the guitar back to Earth. There's a dreamy quality to the song that makes it easy to listen to. And it ends on just a slow fade out, which adds to its sort of magical quality.

I think it's my favorite song on the album, besides A Sort of Homecoming. Just gorgeous.

"Carnival...wheels fly and the colors spin through alcohol..."

This is one of my favorite U2 songs, definitely in the top 5. When I listen to it I feel like I'm just kind of floating and everything around can just fall away. I got into it a couple of summer ago while on a school trip to England...This song and "Bad" earned everlasting places in my hear on that trip haha. We were on a train from Bath to London going through the countryside and I was listening to it on my headphones (and I think everything is deeper and more effective on headphones) and it caught me completely. I loved it.

This is one of my Top Five faves too. I don't quite know what it is about it.. it just defines me personally, in some weird way. I don't know, I've just always felt a kinship to this song?

Hmm...I don't know about this song. It's just...there for me. I like it, sure, but it's not one of my favorites. And I really don't know why.

Quite possibly my favourite track off the UF album. I would love to hear this one live... it's another song I can only describe as "gorgeous". Love the slow-building, dreamy intro... the way the drums come crashing in... the evocative lyrics, the aching passion in Bono's performance... the dramatic middle section and the somewhat ominous ending. It's so epic. And I absolutely have to mention the video, which for me, *perfectly* captures the mental images that I get from the song. It has just the right moody, creepy quality to it. (I heard the song many times before I saw the video, so I was amazed at how appropriate it was.)

Yes, this is a song that can only be described as epic. And this is the U2 I first became hooked on at 5 years of age. This is the U2 that taught me to believe in dreams and poetry. This album is their most poetic, along with Achtung Baby. And it is a natural lead-in to my taste in bands like Radiohead, tho I doubt Radiohead would approve. ;) Definitely a song to listen to to help break writer's block. So many images and feelings to draw from that it only can provoke. Never seen the video tho. :(
