i would really, really like specifics..

im going to the coachella festival in indio, california, and we might have an opportunity to pass by and search for it...

Where are you coming from to go to Indio? The location of the remains of The Tree are much further north than Indio. It's actually northwest of Death Valley, east of the Owens Lake bed off hwy-190, near Lone Pine and Olancha, CA.

I was there just 2 weeks ago, didn't find the remains of the tree itself, but we were VERY close.

Check out this picture: (i'm linking to it because it's kinda too big to post here)

Yeah, we tried looking for that but were running out of time...I went with my mom. She likes U2 but she's not really the type to spend all day wandering around in the brush looking for some rocks. ;) We invested about an hour and a half, each of us split up with pictures, trying to find the exact spot, to no avail. I don't know how quickly trees decay, or if anyone would have moved the rocks. I would like to go back sometime and make another search for it, though. Breaks my heart that I didn't find it when it was still alive and upright. It was emotional for me just being in that spot, I don't know what I would have felt if I could have seen that tree right before my eyes!

This page was extremely helpful to us in finding the location, moreso than the pictures U2 took with the tree:

Yes they do. ;)

If you're interested in Zabriskie Point, there are photos of it in that feb_02_trip folder. I haven't given the pictures descriptive names, but the Zabriskie ones start at:

I'll risk looking like an idiot by admitting that I clicked on the last pic of the fallen tree and got tears in my eyes. *sniff*

Hey after seeing how close to the area she was, I would try to see for myself.....and then probably cry like a baby ;-). All I would think is, "wow, this is where they stood and now I'm here".....

As an alternative, maybe you could visit Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. That's where they shot the cover for The Joshua Tree. It's BEAUTIFUL and it would be closer to Indio than The Tree, too.
