U2 LiveJournal

Hello Hello!!

August 10th, 2001

I'm never satisfied heh. @ 10:57 pm

I'm currently feelin: satisfied satisfied
I'm currently hearin: U2 - When Love Comes to Town

Hi everyone. I never really introduced myself but I've been reading the posts here for a couple months. I missed U2 when they came to Atlanta and I'm hoping that they come here for the possible 3rd leg. Well as a graduation gift (part of it anyway) I made my sister a U2 mixed cd and an RH one and now I decided to improve on at least the U2 one. Her's had only 13 tracks and when I wanted a copy for myself, I re-did some of it so now it has 18 tracks. Its just singles really, sort of an introspective or my version of a greatest hits. Here's the tracklist:

1. I Will Follow
2. Pride
3. New Year's Day
4. Sunday Bloody Sunday
5. With or Without You
6. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
7. Desire
8. When Love Comes to Town
9. Mysterious Ways
10. One
11. If God Would Send His Angels
12. Staring at the Sun
13. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
14. The Sweetest Thing
15. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
16. Beautiful Day
17. Walk On
18. Sunday Bloody Sunday (the Edge vox Sarajevo 9-23-97)

I can't help it. I like tinkering with this sort of thing and I nearly filled one of my 80 minute discs. Just watch, I'll probably tinker with this again! But right now, I think its perfect. I'm obviously more of a casual U2 fan since these are singles but they are a band on my "must buy the whole catalog list". Maybe one day I'll have enough $ to do so ;-). I should really get in to some b-sides though. I feel kind of bad that I don't know some really. Anyone here have any recommendations?

Are you puting together live songs or studio songs? You've got some great songs in there, but I can't comment about the order - I am terrible about that sort of thing! I just know that I like certain songs and some sound better after certain ones than others. Um, does that make sense?

Have you got a copy of the Atlanta show yet? It is pretty good. If you want a copy, I have one. Several LJ people will verify I am an OK person to give you a show :)

Yeah I got it. I missed a good show :-(! I know a couple ppl who were there for PJ (though they had to settle for Nelly heh) and they commented how Bono was kissing all the girls in the heart. My cd is studio but I was just interested in finding some b-sides on say morpheus so I can d/l and get a feel for. Thanks for your offer, I appreciate it :-). What b-side shouls I get?

I know what you meant about the order. I tried to put them in some sort of chronological order but I did this off the top of my head and I really should have consulted a website first ;-). I think its sounds alright. I wanted to put the live SBS last for some reason. That's got to be the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard. What's interesting is that for some reason, the Edge's live version has been credited to both Radiohead (that's not Thom Yorke) and the Smashing Pumpkins (I can see how it kind of sounds like James Iha but not really). One of my absolute favorites.....

Re: P.S.

I love the slow live SBS! Is it the one off the single of If God Will Send His Angels? That is just so beautiful.

I made a B-Sides CD from the 90's. It turned out pretty good and I liked the order. Here it is:

Holy Joe (the Guilty Mix)
Pop Muzik
Lady with the Spinning Head
Where Did It All Go Wrong
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Happiness is a Warm Gun
North and South of the River
Fortunate Son
Night and Day
Paint it Black
Don't Take Your Guns to Town
Satellite of Love
Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad
I've Got You Under My Skin
Slow Dancing

The only song I would probably move in the order is North and South of the River.

Re: P.S.

When I was under the impression it was the Smashing Pumpkins, someone clarified and mentioned that it was on a Maxi single though I don't remember if it was If God Would Send His Angels or The Sweetest Thing. Those look like some good songs there. I of course not knowing any of them can't say much more than that ;-). Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! I appreciate it.

Re: P.S.

*gasp* You don't know Salome? or Lady with the Spinning Head? or North and South of the River? or.......?????

Next time you are up on your favorite mp3 downloading program, do a search for at least those three, and then for the others. They are all b-sides from the AB, Zooropa, and Pop singles.

Re: P.S.

I just recently got the Achtung Baby demos which of course has all those versions of Salome ;-). I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet but by all accounts its amazing. I figured Salome would be a good song, why else would they do it so many times!

I think their best B-sides were during the JT-RH period. I believe the story goes that JT was originally going to be a double-disc (tape?) album, but they scrapped the idea after several extra radio-quality songs were written and recorded. These became the b-sides.

The older b-sides are just not as polished, and from AB on, most of the b-sides have been remixes. There were some good Pop ones...

The cheapest way to stock up on B-sides is to find a copy of the Best of/B-Sides disc they released in 1998. The double album is a bit harder to find now, but I have come across it recently.

Here's a list of my favorite B-sides...

Big Girls are Best (Stuck in a Moment/Walk On B-side)
Luminous Times (With or Without You b-side)
Pop Muzik (Last night on Earth b-side)
Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad (If God would Send his Angels b-side)
A Celebration (i think this was actually a single, but it's not on any of the albums)
A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel (an RH b-side, not sure which single it was on)

When I started collecting u2 b-sides, I actually found Circuit City to be a good place to get imports. Tower has comparable prices, though. Ebay is great for the older ones but expect to pay collectors' prices (hell, the current imports are going for collectors' prices).

And for the regular albums, used CD stores all the way!

Hope this helps. :)

Re: b-sides

Oh I forgot! I have that greatest hits double album. Silly me :-)! I came across it at a little store called Wuxtry's here in Atlanta. How the hell I forgot about it is beyond me. Thanks for the suggestions though. I'll have to see if I can find them on morpheus.

I had to put in my 2 cents

I made a U2 CD recently. I made one that closely resembled a show U2 did in April, right before they played 2 nights in San Jose, CA where I saw them. It's track listing was:

1. Elevation
2. Beautiful Day (live, 2000)
3. Until The End Of The World (live, 1992)
4. New Year's Day (single edit)
5. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
6. Gone (live in Mexico City, 1998)
7. Discotheque (radio edit)
8. Staring At The Sun (live, 1997)
9. New York (live, 2000)
10. I Will Follow
11. Sunday Bloody Sunday (live at Red Rocks, 1983)
12. The Sweetest Thing (1998 remake)
13. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
14. Bullet The Blue Sky (live, 1992)
15. 11 O' Clock Tick Tock (live, 2000)
16. "40" (live in Eastern Europe, 1988)

I have a few suggestions. I have only found on 1 CD so far, the rare A Celebration. It was a 1982 A-side that was never relaeased in the US. It's B-side was Trash Trampoline and the Party Girl. They even filmed a video for A Celebration. My next U2 compilation CD will look something like this (kinda like my U2 greatest hits):

1. Gloria
2. I Threw A Brick Through A Window/A Day Without Me (live, 1982 - B side)
3. Beautiful Day
4. Two Hearts Beat As One
5. Boomerang II
6. A Sort Of Homecoming (live, 1985)
7. Until The End Of The World
8. An Cat Dubh - Into The Heart
9. I Will Follow (live, 2000)
10. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
11. The Three Sunrises
12. Where The Streets Have No Name
13. Like A Song
14. Fire
15. One
16. Bullet The Blue Sky
17. Party Girl (live, 1983 at Red Rocks)
18. Elevation (live 2000 at BBC)
19. New Year's Day

Aaaaah yeah!
