Hello Hello!!

Song of The Day @ 10:24 am

I'm currently feelin: crappy crappy
I'm currently hearin: Jem, "Wish I"

Today's selection is

"One" from Achtung Baby (1991)

Thoughts: This remains one of U2's most soulful and heartfelt of songs that I have ever heard from them. In high school English class, we had to choose between analyzing the music video of this song or Peter Gabriel's "Digging In The Dirt". I chose the latter, simply because all of the imagery in "One"'s video was just too confusing. I think it had something to do with the duality of one's soul but I'm not really sure nor was I sure that I could make a coherent paper out of it. Anyway, I just adore the guitar work on this song. Bono's vocal work is one of the best of his entire career (I think that's saying something given yesterday's selection). I particularly liked this part of the lyrics:

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?

The imagery in there is very raw and works, I think, towards conveying the pain and desperation that Bono is feeling.

When Q magazine called this the greatest song ever, I think they were probably right. Beautiful, incredible lyrics, heartfelt.

And the video with Bono in the bar? HUMMINA.

Favorite U2 song of all time plain and simple.
favorite line:
"we're one but we're not the same
we get to cary each other...one"
I think that line is so simple and yet it is so powerful all at the same time.

My favourite U2 song ever, and definitely worthy of the "greatest song of all time" title. It's an absolute masterpiece in every way - flawless vocals, incredible emotion, everything. The guitar intro on the album version gives me chills. The Modena version on the Miss Sarajevo single makes me cry. The lyrics are incredibly impressive - I had a real "whoa" moment when someone pointed out the following to me:

Well it's
2 late
2 drag the past out
in-2 the light
We're 1...

I can't imagine any U2 song ever topping this one for me, as it really resonates with the aching sadness at the core of me. It's beautiful. Especially when you hear the band talk about how it came so naturally, and pretty much saved them at a time when they were close to splitting up over creative differences... how could anyone fail to be moved by that?

Achtung Baby is in my opinion the most amazingly perfect album they've ever recorded, and even though the quality of every track is stunning, One somehow manages to stand head and shoulders above the rest of it. It's the ultimate. And I love the videos too, especially the drag version.

One is an epic song. My favorite part is when he sings:
We hurt each other and we do it again
It's just the way he sings everything. His voice is a very beautiful instrument on it's own.

ONE is cool in that it's lyrics can apply to numerous situations and always seems to soothe the sparked nerves of something. And (similar to CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS) the song seems to take off, fly, and land like a jet plane. The wonder of exhilerating flight without wings! Can never grow old however much it gets played!
