"One" from Achtung Baby (1991)
Thoughts: This remains one of U2's most soulful and heartfelt of songs that I have ever heard from them. In high school English class, we had to choose between analyzing the music video of this song or Peter Gabriel's "Digging In The Dirt". I chose the latter, simply because all of the imagery in "One"'s video was just too confusing. I think it had something to do with the duality of one's soul but I'm not really sure nor was I sure that I could make a coherent paper out of it. Anyway, I just adore the guitar work on this song. Bono's vocal work is one of the best of his entire career (I think that's saying something given yesterday's selection). I particularly liked this part of the lyrics:
Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
The imagery in there is very raw and works, I think, towards conveying the pain and desperation that Bono is feeling.
