"Last Night On Earth" (Song of The Day) @ 12:46 pm

hue126:
I'm currently feelin: happy happy
I'm currently hearin: U2, "Last Night On Earth"

Today's selection is

"Last Night On Earth" from Pop (1997)

Thoughts: I like the dark mood that is set by this song. It starts, appropriately, with the bass and guitar riffs setting the tone and never letting go. I like how the chorus has the rest of the band echoing the words that Bono sings. It's like the song was really set for the kind of dancing that you would see at clubs that would often lead to sex. The kind of yearning that Bono sings about is the stuff that taps into the deepest desires of the soul. It's animal and primal and stirs with abandon and passion. The song is very sexy and urgent at its heart. A real surprise since I didn't expect to like it so much. What a song!

I normally don't comment on these (no time!) but I love LNOE. I used to listen to it during Finals week, and altered the lyrics to fit the theme of the week (last week of finals- no sleep, no food, just caffiene, etc)

I find it humorous you choose this song as I have my final Master's paper due in a week and I feel like its the last night on earth. *Sigh* back to work

You know, this song just hasn't held up well for me. I loved it when "Pop" first came out, and certainly don't hate it now, but it's not a standout track for me.

I think part of the problem is that in my mind, I associate it with "Gone," just because of their placement on "Pop." So inevitably, I end up comparing it to "Gone." And "Gone" always comes out on top. ;-)

Hmmm, it's a pretty strong track though it's not one of my favourites on Pop - I'd probably skip LNOE if I was in a hurry. I think I'm partly put off by the disturbing cartoon images they used on the tour during this song... it's hard to shake that uneasy feeling when I hear it!  The intro is fantastically dirty, though, and it's a good energetic song. I love the bridge with the two overlapping voices ("The world turns and we get dizzy / Is it spinning for you the way it's spinning for me?"). The Beatles reference in the line about the News Of The World and The Sun is a nice touch. My favourite line is probably "She hasn't been to bed in a week / She'll be dead soon, then she'll sleep", which IIRC wasn't even *in* the song originally (the lyrics in the booklet are completely different).

I also love the First Night In Hell remix, it's perfect for when I'm feeling utterly lost and depressed... though it's barely relevant to this discussion as it doesn't resemble the original song in the slightest. *g*

"She hasn't been to bed in a week/She'll be dead soon, then she'll sleep"

That just sums it up right there. Kick ass lyrics that leave you begging for more. That's what the entire Pop album is to me, especially this song.
