"Elevation" (Song of The Day) @ 12:57 pm

hue126:
I'm currently feelin: hungry hungry
I'm currently hearin: Enya, "Ebudae"

Today's selection is

"Elevation (Tomb Raider Mix)" from Tomb Raider: The Soundtrack (2001)

Thoughts: I always preferred this version to the album version presented in, I believe, The Best of 1990-2000 (check me, I might be wrong). Simply because this version had more energy than the lethargic album version. From the moment I heard it on MTV (they ran the video to the song), I loved how it felt so trippy and bugged out. It's just a song that I rocked out to. I love how the chorus is so bombastic that it feels like it will send the band into overload or something. The chorus itself is established with a driving guitar riff that is among the strongest sounds I have ever heard. Then, as you think you're getting higher into the chorus, the band drops down into this bridge that seems inspired out of The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" or something. It's really cool. I love this song! Someone please explain to me why the album version lacks the kind of free-spirited energy that this track has in spades!

I like the album version and the Tomb Raider mix equally, they both have good bits that the other is lacking. The best thing about the Tomb Raider mix is that it includes Edge's dirty guitar bit at the end (as heard in live performances). The video is so awesome too.

Elevation is my favourite track on ATYCLB along with In A Little While. I'm way too exhausted to make any further comments today. :p

(Oh, just one more thing... the Biffco Mix is possibly the best version of Elevation. WHATISITTHATYOUWANNNT!)
(Well, the Influx Mix is awesome too, but that's a totally different vibe.)

I don't think I've ever heard the Biffco mix of the song. Do you have it and are you able to post a link to YSI?

I think it's the guitar in the album version that kills the song. There's just NO WAY for an acoustic riff (chorus) to work in a song like Elevation.

"Elevation" was released in 2001, so it's not included on the Best of 1990-2000 set. :)

I love both versions, personally. I hold this song in really really high regard, being as it was the one that first got me interested in U2. I love the video for this song, too, because it's just so much fun. But, I think I like the album version better. I don't really know why.
