U2 LiveJournal

Hello Hello!!

April 13th, 2005

Just curious and want some opinions... @ 07:31 pm

_crimson_nails:
Say something happened to Bono's voice (god forbid) and he had to leave U2. However, before leaving he wanted to appoint someone to take his place.

Who would you choose to take Bono's place as U2's lead singer? (it can be ANYONE)

And don't say "waaaa I love Bono too much no one can take his place blah blah blah" because that sucks all of the fun out of it ;)

What's the reason for this post? I even hate thinking about it. Replace Bono? lol!!! no one would be able to replace Bono. There's only one. He is one of a kind.

That's really hard to say. I can't picture it at all. I think the end of the band would be the only good option.

I say go on without him... the Edge has a phenomenal voice and has a great deal of the spirit in him that Bono has. The band could still succeed and kick ass, and I think that's what Bono would want. Granted, it wouldn't be the same... but, we'd keep all the other boys without having to replace Bono.

But, yes, I'd rather not even think about it... =S

i like your thinking. no, i dont want to get rid of bono but

a) i think it's funny when people get defensive about U2 "what if" games
and
b)it's an interesting question

i vote to move edge to lead vocals. if we must have someone outside the band then i vote for...thom york.

I say his best mate and fellow crooner Gavin Friday should do it. He has been around u2 since the beginning, he would fit right in. After hearing his recent stuff, I think he would nail the ballads. Plus, he is acting as a consultant on the current tour so he is right on hand. Plus, I am a huge Gavin fan as well as a huge u2 fan so seeing him sing with them would be like one, giant fantasy come true:)

(ps: What is with all the 'but no one could replace him replies when the o.p. specifically asked for people to not answer with those?)

you know what's funny, the whole time I was typing my answer down below I was going "but what about gavin, but what about gavin..."

great minds, or maybe just obsessed minds think alike perhaps

Cool idea! He would be great.

And I agree with your p.s. It's just for fun, people! I don't actually want him to leave! It's like how men comfortable with their sexuality can say if another man is attractive.

Edge.
Outside of that....

Davey Havok of AFI could do some amazing things with U2's music.
No I'm not kidding. Since his throat surgery his 'new' singing voice is incredible, this gorgeous tenor he's been hiding from us all along...

Jeff Martin of The Tea Party is a baritone, but the man has every bit of the charisma and ability to transmit emotion with every move and word and look as Bono does...

Tim Booth, ex-James... similar range, similar energy... great frontman...

They could have Edge sing and get Bono to be a dancer...You know, just kind wave his arms around and get the crowd going.

I'd say The Edge because he's got a good voice, and it would still be the original members.

This guy called Travis Morrison who was in my favorite local band ever, the Dismemberment Plan. He has a sense of humor that I think U2 could use, and he works much better in the confines of a band than he does solo. Not as good a singer as Bono, but he can bring it in live performances.

They wouldn't go on without Bono.

However, Edge could always sing while the aforementioned Bonoman lipsynched. Heh.

Henry Rollins.. ;D

Seriously. Umm. Peter Murphy might be a good one? Peter has an interesting, soothing voice that I think would compliment the majority of U2's songs well.

Does anyone know who Remy Zero is? (They do "Save Me" (Smallville themesong) although I hate it call it that because I had the album it's off of ages before Smallville was a show.)
I think their singer's name is Cinjun Tate, I swear he sounds like a distant cousin of Bono's, and his voice is great. You guys should really check out their stuff, it's amazing.
