Song of The Day @ 03:07 pm

hue126:
I'm currently hearin: Pulp Fiction

Today's selection is

"Seconds" from War (1983)

Thoughts: It's a catchy enough song, but not particularly memorable. The very definition of disposable. I forget about the song as soon as I hear it. But I admire the fact that the accompianment is very consistent and I like the "oh's" that come with the chorus. Even the fact that the song does not follow the traditional song structure (verse, chorus, verse 2, chorus, bridge, end) is very good for the band but there isn't a solid foundation for which I could get attached to the song. That another thing, the song is so short. It prevents any real lasting impression that could be made.

i had to do a 2 minute response to this song in my media class as a whole class. it was hard to get everyone to decide on the same thing, but finally after 2 minutes were up we finally came up with the word death.

also, i love how its hard to tell its the edge.

I was about to say the same thing. Yeah. When I first listened to the album (one of the first U2 albums I ever purchased)... well, I was already fimiliar with "New Year's Day" and "Sunday, Bloody Sunday"...
But this song made me stop and be like, "Whoa. This is a band I like, this band here. Screw Guns N Roses (my fav band at the time), this is MY band now. These are MY boys."
"And they're doing the atomic bomb
Do they know where the dance comes from
Yes, they're doing the atomic bomb
They want you to sing along"
That part sends shivers down my spine EVERY time I hear it.

I love the way they incorporated that Airborne Rangers clip into the song in the middle, too.

i love seconds. the live arrangement at RED ROCKS is superb. also, it is great to hear the Edge actually sing lead vocals, even if it is only the first verse. his vocals on Boomerang II are especially nice, and if I never have to hear Numb again, that would be fine by me. god i hate that song.

Totally disagree about Seconds not being memorable. I think it's one of the best tracks on the album (OK, so there are many best tracks on War *g*). Great lyrics and brilliant vocals from both Bono and The Edge. Catchy as hell. Love the bassline, love the harmonies. I was going to try and pick a favourite verse, but I can't because I just love the whole thing!
