Second!

I'm confused. Maybe I missed the boat on this one but who is this person doing all these reviews and why haven't they heard like any of U2's songs?

He's a fan, but a newer one still getting all of the tracks assembled together. So sometimes he just posts a title so that we all have something to discuss :)

Wow. Should I take that as an insult?

No! I'm so sorry if it came across that way. It was actually me trying to cut off any more of the arguing that occured before. I really like that you post the songs day to day, even if you haven't heard them yourself. I only got **really** into U2 myself this year, so I'm glad to see other newbies. Again-very sorry if it came across as insulting. I was just trying to keep things positive.

Don't stop. :) You're contributing to quality discussions; even if you haven't had the opportunity to hear everything.

One of my favorite songs on this album. It's sad, in a way: the speaker seems tired and worn out in this world. Another one of these songs about talking a stand for what is right, but from the standpoint of what happens when you don't.

It's also one of my son's favorite U2 songs. He's five. :)

If i remember correctly, VH1 named the video one of the worst (this was several years ago). I guess they just didn't get it.

If they thought that was one of the worst, they **definitely** didn't get it. That video is awesome and captures that song perfectly.

The first time I heard Numb I thought, What the fuck is this?!?

But, now I love it, it's one of my faves, Edge is perfect.

Plus, one of THE best U2 clips ever made :D

To me it was definitely one of those "grow-on-me" songs. Especially useful for times when you really ARE feeling numb. It's perfect then :)

Okay, so you've got The Edge singing lead and Bono in the background with this falsetto that's so much fun to sing along with. Oh, and some clever verses. Sounds good to me. And the video is neat too.

Love this song. Even my non-U2 liking friends love this song.
Edge is a genius. I've always wanted him to do more songs like this but after rethinking it, I think it should be the only one so "Numb" doesn't lose its luster.

That "Gimme some more" is just the best stuff.
Even after watching the video I just get some crazy ideas for a new video. Maybe if I become a director one day I'll get a boy to act it out for me.

Ack! I love this song!

And by the way, hue126, I didn't know so much about them either until after HTDAAB came out. I had ATYCLB and loved it but lost the cd shortly afterwards. Then I stole (yes, stole) my mom's Best of 1980-1990 and have been racking it up ever since. I bought Best of 1990-2000 and my life has never been the same. lol...
I'd recommend getting the Best of Cd's if you are low on cash cause it's pretty much got all the songs you have been talking about and then slowwwwwwllly buy yourself each CD. It's what I've been doing.

:D

Fantastic song from a fantastic album. Everyone else has already captured my thoughts on this song; so I'll leave it at that.

I happen to adore this song! I just love to hear Edge sing. I think what I love most about is the experimentation value of it. It's not what you'd expect because of the monotone sound of Edge's voice but that's the whole point! Anti-conformity is essential to these guys and that pushes me to see things differently.
The video is perfect for the song. All the distractions going on and Edge is just so very unemotional about it. I can understand why some wouldn't get it.

While Edge's vocals for thissong are a bit interesting (I won't say lacking but close to) I love the feel of the song. It's exactly what Edge wanted it to be, I think, and it's a good 3 minutes of captured mood.

Love the music, don't know why, it's simple and repetative but I adore it. The lyric rock as well, including the Larry and Bono backing.

It was stuck in my head head.
I love the "Too much is not enough." because it's so true.
Poor Edge. He needs a hug.
I love that song though. There's something about it. So simple yet it goes way deeper than that.

Ohhhhhh yes - simply fantastic!  This song never ceases to impress me, I just can't get over how so much complex layering can come together *perfectly* and make such an awesome song. I wouldn't even know where to begin describing why it's so great. It has to be heard to be appreciated, that's for sure. I recommended it to a non-U2 fan once and he was similarly blown away.

Edge's monotone contrasting with Bono & Larry's falsetto - brilliant. (Any song with Bono-falsetto has to be brilliant anyway.)  I love the lyrics and was really proud of myself when I managed to memorise them all!  The music is so cool too, and all the random squiggly background noises, and the way the chaos builds up before ending on the climactic "I FEEL NUMB" line. Yeeeeee, I just adore this song.

Other favourite bits include:
"Don't take it on board, don't fall on your sword, just play another chord / If you feel you're getting bored / I feel numb..."
"Don't theorise, realise, polarise / Glance, dance, dismiss, apologise"
"Don't project, don't connect, protect / Don't expect, suggest..."

The video is one of the best they've ever done, as well - pure hilarity. I should watch it more often. Then again, it's cool to see it for the first time in ages, when you've forgotten all the fabulous moments in it. (It's even better when you've read U2 At The End Of The World so you know all the amusing behind-the-scenes anecdotes!)

I have to say, Numb is crap live, though. I like the way they incorporated the Public Enemy "Don't believe the hype!" line into the middle section - that works really well - but I've never heard a performance where Edge doesn't completely fuck up the lyrics and timing. Gah!
