Song of The Day @ 05:42 pm

hue126:
I'm currently feelin: tired tired
I'm currently hearin: Jet, "Hold On"

Today's selection is "The Ocean" from Boy (1979)

Thoughts: Early U2 stuff, but "The Ocean" shows a much darker and more mmody side to the band than their later, more commercial fare. The instrumentation takes a more central part of the song rather than the vocals. Too bad it's way too short to make any sort of lasting impression.

I think U2's known for making a last impression by being short, by not giving in to what;s normal or wanted. WOWY could have had an amazing guitar solo, it's meant to have one, but Edge keeps it short and simple and hardly to himself.

Anyway, I love the song. Though I'm partial to early U2 stuff, but I think the lyric is absolutely gorgeous and some of Bono's best writing was done when he was coming of age. Not to mention the fact that Edge breaking into his "echo" and the heavy drums they had back then.

There isn't much to say about this one. It's a nice gentle little song, I like the lyrics and the way it's sung, and the boat/water sound effects. But it's essentially a filler track between two halves of the album, and I'm bewildered as to why they're now wasting concert time *performing* this track. I'll certainly be, erm, interested to see how it's done, because there's not exactly much to work with.

I've always been intrigued by the printed lyrics in the booklet which say "Splashes the soul of my shoes". I could never decide whether it was intentional or just a typo.
