"I Fall Down" from October (1981)
Thoughts: I really like this song. I'm surprised that I would. It's one of the few early favorites of mine that come from U2. As usual, the instrumentation is great because it evokes this great, peaceful feeling. I'm always a fan when the band is trying to find its initial sound and isn't really straying into the anthemic rock territory that defines them in later years. For this track, I think I love the piano because it contributes a really nice, basic pop feel to the entire track, especially when the chorus is so abrasive and really contrasts with the rest of the song. It doesn't feel like Bono is stretching himself vocally in this track, but it goes very well with the instrumentation and the rhythm.
