Vertigo Tour 2005 - Live in Chicago? @ 11:29 am

socialcrazed:
I'm currently feelin: cheerful cheerful

From @U2:

Hamesh Hamilton, director of U2's Elevation 2001: Live in Boston DVD, has been spotted at several recent Vertigo Tour shows, and tonight he confirmed why with @U2 staff attending the 2nd Vancouver concert: He's been making plans for a DVD shoot that's planned for the Chicago shows beginning next weekend.

I think I speak for all of us when I say... sweet!

I guess so, but I think I remember that shoot pissing off a lot of fans when they did that in Boston.

What's so bad about them filming a concert for a DVD?

I dunno. I wasn't at that show, but I do remember hearing from fans who were upset about how it was carried out.

From what I understand, most of the people who were upset were angry because of the way GA admission was handled. Evidently "prettier" people got in the heart, as producers or whoever went down the GA line and chose the people they wanted in the heart, rather than the people who had lined up first.

However, with the fan outrage that happened after that, I'd be really shocked if it happened again. It's not like the crowd is the focus of the DVD anyway.

I dunno...I think the crowd is as important as the band in making a good live DVD. U2 shows are so dependent on the energy of the crowd, it's a much different vibe than seeing Tori Amos or something like that.

Whatever it was, it didn't work...the crowd in Boston that night was pretty lame. I've got a few DVD boots from other shows and there was a huge difference.

However, as I'm going to the Chicago shows, they will undoubtedly be better. :)

:/ I didn't make myself clear. The feeling of the crowd is definitely a big part of any show, whether it is being taped or not. All I meant was that the camera isn't on the crowd for the vast majority of the time, and therefore it really shouldn't matter what the people closest to the stage look like as long as they're having the time of their lives. ;)

Yeah, the lameness of the Boston crowd makes me prefer the Slane DVD to the Boston one. I think the crowd at Slane was much more energized and the boys were able to come out and do a more relaxed, true-to-themselves feeling show. :) I don't have bootleg videos - I've always thought they'd be a little scary and amateur-looking. I'll have to check it out sometime.

And see you in Chicago! :D

True, but with the setup of the Elevation and Vertigo tours, with the heart/ellipse thing, you see a lot more of the audience than you do on a lot of DVD's.

Well, we'll see how it turns out in a few days. :)

I must just be weird then, because I never got any sort of impression from my Boston DVD of what the people in GA looked like. *shrug* Whatever, I'm just psyched because I'll actually be able to see a show I went to this time. Woo!

I think it makes it harder to see for the fans, since the cameras are continually sweeping in front of the stage, especially the people right up near the ellipse. And the bouncers are probably tougher/gets annoyed faster.

There were a few issues...one being that there were fewer people on the floor to make room for the cameras and such. But the major issue with that Boston show was that they kept people who'd been waiting all morning/day out of the heart, and "installed" some fresh bodies in the heart who had just arrived before showtime. (Obviously this didn't help much, since the filmed Boston show was one of the lower-energy nights of the tour) Apparently some fans, in protest, decided to sit down inside the heart for the first few songs, but they edited in footage of the show from the night before to cover it up.

My hope is that this time they'll film all 4 Chicago shows and compile the best bits...U2, like many bands, tends to stiffen up a bit when they know they're being filmed...so we'll see if they do things differently this time.

Im actually suprised they are filming this early into the tour. Most of the dvds/videos have been filmed later into the tour. Boston was pretty early, only 3 months into Elevation. Here we are less than a 2 months into Vertigo. I have no doubt the dvd will be incredible, just surprised they didn't wait and maybe wait for the tour to develop more? i'm rambling

That's what I said to a friend of mine after I first read that... yeah, filming one this early has its own pros and cons.. main pro being getting a Vertigo DVD early.. main con being that Vertigo may not be fully realized at this point. I, personally, am very eager to see Vertigo in action and I'm probably not going to be able go to any shows this tour. So, bring on Chicago!
