I'm currently hearin: Speed of Sound - Coldplay

Hey everyone.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but about an hour ago I heard Speed of Sound by Coldplay (on the radio) for the first time. I've heard of the song, but for some reason, when I heard the song, U2 came into my head. I'm not sure why, but just the overall tone along with the lyrics somewhat provides for that "U2 feel". If you know what I mean.

I hope I'm not going to get flamed for this, but I was just wondering if anyone else came under the same impression; or something like it..

Coldplay are heavily influenced by U2. Chris Martin has said that U2 is one of his all time favorite bands. There was a song out about a year ago, a live Coldplay song where Chris sang an "oooh oooh" part that sound exactly like the "oooh"s in Pride. I love "Speed of Sound" and you're right, it does have a U2 feel to it.

I love that song. I can see why some people compare Coldplay to U2 in general, but their styles are definitely different.
U2 has a more upbeat vibe to them and their songs branch out into different genres.
Coldplay is great too though.

Shouldn't get flamed... the comparison's been there since Coldplay first arrived on the music scene. I don't care for them much myself but a lot of people do get the "feel" of U2 from them as you said. =)
Though the first time I heard "Clocks" I could've sworn it was Sting singing.... o_O

I agree. I think Coldplay is very influenced by U2. Just the different changes in their music. I was listening to Television the other day and could hear early U2 in that.

Does anyone know if Ian McCullough has his hand in this new Coldplay record?

Toward the end of the Coldplay single, actually, I caught a whiff of "Miracle Drug" and the lights used in the video for the song are not un-Vertigo-like, either.

I have to say, I don't get the Coldplay/U2 comparison. I don't hear it!

I had that same feeling. It was just like the first time I heard "Don't Panic" by them; I immediately thought of U2. Maybe that's why I like Coldplay so much...

With Clocks and Scientist I heard it strongly, but I've since decided that generally speaking i don't care for Coldplay. They're music is dark, depressive. U2 is much more upbeat, energetic, it carries you into unknown places... ah! Bliss!

For some reason, this song just isn't doing it for me. I sure hope I like the rest of X&Y better! Maybe I'm just too into the quirkier songs from the two previous Coldplay albums...

I hope I like the rest of X&Y better, too, b/c I've already pre-ordered it. Anyway, Coldplay is up there as one of my favorite bands. U2 is #1, of course.

The only thing that reminds me of U2 is the first two words - that "How long" is straight out of 40!

Because Coldplay (at least Chris Martin) thinks they're U2.
