Song Of The Day @ 10:54 am

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: cheerful cheerful
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Electrical Storm

Today's Selection is...

“Elecrtical Storm“ from The Best Of 1990-2000.

Right then. This song came out of nowhere. In all senses.

I heard this song a few years back; it was the radio version, which is a bit more pepped-up than the William Orbit remix. I like both versions, personally.

When I first heard this song, I was, for some reason, immediately hooked on the song because of the novel little guitar bit. I also loved the lines “On rainy days, we’d go swimming out/On rainy days, swimming in the sound”. While admittedly not Bono’s best lyrics, they created a picture for me that I could compare with events and memories in my life.

This is honestly such a fun song to sing along to, also. Getting funny looks as you and your friends howl “Electrical Stoooooorm!” is always amusing.

The sea it swells like a sore head
And the night it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
And the day it is breaking

On rainy days we'd go swimming out
On rainy days, swimming in the sound
On rainy days we'd go swimming out

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
If the sky can crack, there must be some way back
For love and only love

Car alarm won't let ya back to sleep
You're kept awake dreaming some else's dream
Coffee is cold, but it will get you through
Compromise, that's nothing new to you

Let's see colours that have never been seen
Let's go to places no one else has been

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
Well if the sky can crack, there must be some way back
To love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Baby don't cry

It's hot as hell, honey in this room
Sure hope the weather will break soon
The air is heavy, heavy as a truck
We need the rain to wash away our bad luck

Hey-yeah, hey-eeyay

Well if the sky can crack, there must be some way back
For love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm

Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry

The most boring U2 single ever. Crap song, crap video. I dont think I can think of anything good to say about this song. Except the next song after it on the best Of is One.

Aww really? One of my favorite songs is Electrical Storm. I've always imagined a different video of it in my head involving a plane in an actual Electrical Storm. But that's cause I'm partially insane and a control freak when it comes to directing stuff.
Some of the lyrics aren't up to par with Bono's stuff but I think there is some classic Bono in there. Particulary:
Car alarm won't let ya back to sleep
You're kept awake dreaming some else's dream
Coffee is cold, but it will get you through
Compromise, that's nothing new to you

And really: Let's see colours that have never been seen.

Maybe it's cause I live in the lightning capital of the world and deal with Electrical Storms daily. (Yeah...lately, it's been daily).

Great song to listen to on a rainy day.

Yes, I think that's what's made me love this song so much; the fact that I see an image in my head more fitting to the song than the actual video.

The video is boring. Whereas mine has depth.
:P
Condensed version. Trust me, I've imagined every shot and don't want to bore you with a three page essay.
Woman boards a plane alone (the main idea is that her guy has just died or whatnot) and the plane takes off. So like various shots on the impending storm outside and this plane flying through it. I figure since Bono is the star (!ya!), he's the dead guy. He's sitting in this seat next to Edge, Larry and Adam. He gets up and someone else sits down in his seat. By the time he says hot as hell, lightning has struck the plane and a fire is in the back of the plane (heh, get it?). Everyone's panicking but her, she's just staring out the window. (Air is heavy...) those air masks fall and everyone puts them on, but her.
(Baby don't cry) Bono is sitting next to her and like puts his hand over hers. The plane is about to hit water. Everyone's crying but her. She's still looking out the window. She looks in Bono's direction and smiles.

Morbid. I know.

I like the idea, I would like to hear it more in depth. I have a few Incubus songs that make videos in my head, and it always makes me disappointed to see their version. Funny thing is, Im not a huge fan of Incubus.

I always have some perfect vision of everything in mind and then when it comes to writing it out, it's jumbled.
I've written movies in my head, put them on paper and find them to be poor cause I really can't capture facial expressions and things like that in words.

I'll write it out line by line, shot by shot one day and post a link for you all to read. If it really interests you.

Electrical Storm is a great track. I love it! Maybe not in the tradition of U2 but stand alone, it's good. My ears perk up when I hear it (thanks in part to the video). I enjoy the video as well. Larry gets a starring role for once. He's wet and gets to makeout with a chick while Bono sings. I couldn't ask for more..

I like this. I love the bell intro, I tried to teach it to myself one very long day at marching band camp, but I failed... I used to hear it every day at 5:30 in the morning on my way to early morning church. I do believe this is the video that turned me into a Larry fan.

I love Electrical Storm. It just came out of nowhere during the quiet after Elevation. I always associate it with my feelings during my freshmen year at PSU.

This is a song I love, although it took a while to grow on me. At first, I loved the verses and really hated the chorus. The "electrical storm" melody just doesn't go anywhere, it just hangs there, unresolved.

Then, I got it. It's supposed to be unresolved - it's like the theme of the song, lovers clearing the air. Tension is building, and rising until that giant "HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" Bono gives.

Damn, I love that part. Great, great song. Me, I prefer the Orbit mix.

I like the song...not my favorite. All of my other U2 friends love it though.

don't like the song. one of the very few U2 songs I actually never ever want to hear. not on the radio, not on TV, not on CD, and not on the DVD. I was so worried they'd play this live like they did "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" (which i loved)

but i'm glad someone likes it.

Yay, I LOVE this song! I actually listened to it twice on the train home today, both versions (my player was on random, and who was I to argue?) and I just think it's really good and clever. To me it does bring to mind a stormy day/night and you can just hear it... When it gets to summer and all hot and horribly humid at least I can play that song and pretend it's not as bad ;)

I really cannot decide what I think of this song, I seem to blow hot and cold on it.

On the one hand, there are some really nice lyrics in it (mainly the "You're in my mind..." chorus) and I love Bono's aching vocals, especially the falsetto-y bits (forever my weakness!) and the big "Heyyyyy..." that was mentioned above. It's got a nice tune; I think I prefer the William Orbit mix as it's more soothing and atmospheric. I smile and sing along if I hear the song in a pub or whatever. When I first heard it, I thought it was going to grow on me in a big way and become something I adored.

...And yet, it never really did. I don't listen to that Best Of CD (because I wasn't impressed with the track listing, and made my own with only 90s stuff on it), so I tend to forget Electrical Storm even exists - I seem to have mentally filed it under "boring" and never feel the urge to put it on. It's probably because, when we originally heard the title, I was really excited at the prospect of a big heavy rock song that would capture the feeling of an electrical storm - and this gentle ballad just isn't what I was hoping for!  And yes, I also cringe at the truck/luck rhyme. I dunno, it's not a song I would ever include on a mix tape for another person, I just think it's lacking a spark.

As for the video, I like the mermaid idea, but it bothers me that Samantha has such a crappy tail which clearly shows her legs moving!  I'm a bit grossed out by the incessant snogging and groping, too. It must be a treat for the Larry fans, but it's not my cup of tea!

I forgot to mention, I think I got off to a bad start with this song anyway. Bono gave a preview copy to this Radio 1 DJ as a wedding present, and she kept promising she was going to play it on her show, so I tuned in every weekend but she kept making excuses ("Oh I forgot to bring it, oh I can't find it", blah blah blah). I was beginning to think she was lying and didn't actually have permission to play it, or something. Then I was visiting relatives the following weekend so I couldn't listen to the radio, and to my dismay, I got back home and discovered she finally *had* played the damn song in my absence!  I'd been all excited about hearing the very first play of Electrical Storm along with everyone else, and I ended up being the last to hear it... it shouldn't have affected my feelings toward the song, but it did somehow, the excitement had gone and been replaced by a vague sense of resentment. :/

I remember being in my car when I first heard it, screaming and scaring my sister because she thought something was wrong. The thing that really hooked me was Edge's guitar solo right before the "baby don't cry" part. I think it's great work and I love it. I love the video too because finally, Larry gets in on the action.

I never liked it at first, but now I think it's okay. I don't ever listen to it, though, because I don't have Best of 1990-2000 loaded onto iTunes and I never play it in the car because ... I love JT way too much.

And the video... yawn.

I'm glad to see that some people actually like this song. So do I. :) Although it's not really one of my favorite U2 songs, I still enjoy it and don't think it's crap.
