Today's Selection is...

"Kite" from All That You can't Leave Behind

I found it interesting that so many people had listed this as one of their top 5 favorite songs. When I had ATYCLB, before I was a fan, I remember loving this song very much. I missed it when I lost the cd. It was so lofty and very much like a kite blowing in the wind. The song is musically beautiful as well as the lyrics. The guitar slide in the background reminds me of stuff you would hear in songs from the 70's.
Bono and Edge (I believe they wrote the lyrics together...I don't have the cd booklet with me) have created a genius in this song in my opinion. In particular:
I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to live
And when I'm flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

is quite an attention grabber and an amazing play on words.
I remember reading back that many people considered this a good song to be played at a funeral and I couldn't agree more. It's hopeful in it's lyrics, it's tune and it's rhythm.
Lyrics-

Something is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it means
I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to live
And when I'm flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

‘Cause hardness, it sets in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin

I want you to know
That you don't need me anymore
I want you to know
You don't need anyone, anything at all

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to know what it is will break you
I don't know which way the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
Don't wanna see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There's a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what's gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me

I'm a man, I'm not a child
A man who sees
The shadow behind your eyes

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to know what it is will break you
I don't know where the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
I don't wanna see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it
Life should be fragrant
Roof top to the basement
The last of the rock stars
When hip hop drove the big cars
In the time when new media
Was the big idea
That was the big idea

Side Notes:
I read at songmeanings.net from some folk that Bono wrote this song to his children about his own death (an assasination attempt, or so they say).
I also read that the last 5 lines of the song are an apology to the straying fans who were disappointed by "Pop".

One of my favorite U2 songs ever. I learned to play it on guitar this weekend.

Every time I hear this, it sounds like he is saying "eat" instead of "need".

I absolutely adore this song. It's so beautiful. I've thought more than once I'd like it played at my funeral (oh how happy, lol!). It's definitely one of my favourite U2 songs.

I didn't like this song when I first heard it.

It's now become one I like, but not love.

Favorite parts:
Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it
Life should be fragrant
Roof top to the basement
The last of the rock stars
When hip hop drove the big cars
In the time when new media
Was the big idea
That was the big idea

and

In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There's a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what's gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me...

Yes.

This is one of the ATYCLB songs I've had problems with. It sounded *so* promising from the 30-second preview clip, I thought it was going to be really epic and amazing... and it just didn't live up to my expectations. It's still a nice song and I quite enjoy singing it (in fact my housemate once complimented me on my voice when she overheard me singing Kite!), but I'm not really feeling it, there's something missing. I think some of the lyrics are a bit over my head, and I'm not keen on the end section ("Did I waste it..."), it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the song at all. I have no particular desire to see this live again, especially as it was so heartbreaking on the last tour (I was at the show the day after Bob Hewson died, and this song was a highly emotional part of the gig).

The chorus is definitely the best part of the song for me, along with "I'm a maaaaaannnnn, I'm not a child / A man who sees the shadow behind your eyes". But yeah, not a favourite of mine, which saddens me because I'd hoped it would be. I have the same problem with Walk On.

I think Bono basically means life.
Did I waste my life?
Sure, but not so much that I couldn't enjoy everything in it.
Life should be full of...well...life.
And I think roof top/basement is a metaphor for birth and death.

Just my interpretation though. It does fit with the rest of the song. Don't be afraid of death because life is so vibrant to begin with.

What's all the stuff about hip-hop and new media, then?  I still think it seems oddly tacked on to the rest of the song...

Fave song on ATYCLB. I love it when he gets sentimental and personal, not afraid to appear vulnerable. Sexy!

"Into the Heart" says nothing about this assasination stuff. Has someone been playing around with John Lennon syndrome?
