Song of the Day @ 08:45 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: tired tired
I'm currently hearin: Vertigo - u2

Today's Selection is...

"Vertigo" from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

vertigo
n : a reeling sensation; feeling about to fall

2004's answer to Elevation. Elevate, high altitudes, Vertigo, dizziness from heights...connection? I think so. If anything, this track above all others sums up u2's feelings on their position in music. Fear of falling from the top.
Debuting in a commercial, of all places, this song catches you right off the bat. It's fast beat and backing guitar riff is dancable as Bono/Edge/Adam did in the iPod commercial.
One thing to know: u2 sells. u2 doesn't sell out.
If you are fortunate enough to own a u2pod (yes...it deserves it's own title), then I can pretty much guess the first song you hear on it is "Vertigo" and you probably pull Bono's head bobbing when he says "Yeah yeah yeah!" No? Okay, just me.
Adam gets "the award" (I'm going to have to make up a drawing for this award...) in this song for that bass line in the background. It's what I pay attention to the most in this song. It's a backbone, the heart of the song. You can really feel it when Edge joins in with his guitar.
Edge gets a mini award for that amazing bridge riff.

The lyrics? Short and sweet. Plus u2 gets bilingual!
Favorite lyrics:
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt….

Turn it up loud captain!

Lights go down, it’s dark
The jungle is your head
Can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can’t be bought
Your mind can wander

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel

The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can’t dance
At least they know….

I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something I can feel, feel

Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun…

All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours

All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt….

Hello hello
We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something

I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel…

Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Fun and dancable. A great song to let everyone know:
Weeeeeeeee're baaaaaaaaack!

I really love(d) this song till a few days ago when I actually had some vertigo (with nausea) and it was not fun at all.

But Bono's right, It was everything I wish I didn't know. :)

I love this song. Every now and then I need to skip it when I have the CD spinning, but not very often. I love singing it at the top of my lungs, and I want to learn how to play that kick-ass bridge on guitar. It's also the song that turned the heads of everybody I knew and they were like "I love U2!!" Very understandable, the way they feel. :)

What the hell are the chords on the bridge? Ive seen so many variations. Im assuming your referring to the part when bono starts singing "checkmated...."

Way too overplayed. Also, I like Native Son better. Its alwasy fun explaining to angry people that I DONT KNOW WHY BONO SAYS 1 2 3 14! LEAVE ME ALONE!

Just like other u2 songs, I have also never heard Vertigo on the radio. So for me, it's not.
If anything, Vh1 has killed SYCMIOYO. Every morning on Video Wake-up.
:P
I seem to be picking plenty of "overplayed" songs lately. I'll change it up next week.

For personal reasons, my favorite part of "Vertigo" is:

"We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something

I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel..."

Then again, this song came out right at a very spiritually amazing time for me. :-D

I agree. Like many u2 songs, this one can morph into any meaning you want.

Love it! Makes me want to jump around like a mad fool.

And "Native Son" is not the better song. ;-)

How can I not love U2? If it weren't for that iPod commercial, I might not've ever gotten addicted to U2.
I love the song by itself, it's just one of those songs that's really fun to listen to. But I also love the meaning behind the lyrics.

psst: i have a crazy looking black cat with green eyes that glow in the dark, too. i have this theory that she's really evil when she pretends to be nice, so the other day i just looked at her and called her "An Cat Dubh"; my mother gave me the oddest look.

Amazingly enough, when I hit shuffle songs today on my iPod this was the first song that came up. I raised the volume near maximum, listened to it, hit replay and nearly blew out my eardrums.
But man did I have fun listening to it.

People were giving me looks. Seriously.
(I should have put on my Bono shades! Gah!)

I *LOVE* "Vertigo" even if it's overplayed. :P I can never skip over this song when I listen to "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." I wish they would've shown the full length version of the I-Pod video since it really rocks! I do regard this song as the "Elevation" for this album. I remember jumping up and down like a crazy person in concert when these two songs were played. Just a very fun pop song, period. Love it! :)

I LOVE Vertigo! It's one of my fave-ever U2 songs. I don't think it CAN be overplayed! I never tire of hearing it and it's so upbeat and fun and makes me happy when I hear it! Can't wait to hear it live either! Ah my God gotta go listen now ;)

Ahh you too! (no pun...well...maybe)

I'm going through a complete anti-media phase. Commercials make me sick. The news makes me mad. MTV makes me want to shoot myself.
I avoid it all costs.

I wish life had a pop-up blocker.

"Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel!" is my favourite line.
That and "The girl with crimson nails/Has Jesus 'round her neck."

For the U2 concert here in Vancouver, I dressed up to fit with that (the latter) line. I painted my nails red and wore a giant, kind of gothic-style cross. It was loads of fun.

I still get harassed by Non-U2-Fans about the "1 2 3 14" thing, which drives me nuts, but I LOVE this song.

First time I heard this on the radio, I wasn't sure what to think. I thought all the "yeah"s at the end made it sound like it was unfinished. I listened to it a few times, read an interview with Bono explaining the club (a club called Vertigo representing crazy modern day life, etc. etc.), and now it's grown on me. Not quite my favorite on the album, but still very good. And it's awesome hearing it live (with a Stories for Boys snippet).

First couple times I heard it, I did think, "Oh, this is their new Elevation" since both are so high energy.
