Song of the Day @ 08:36 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: hyper hyper

Today's Selection is...

The Hands That Built America from the "Gangs of New York" soundtrack.

I picked October and THTBA back to back because the piano chords in October are strangely similar to THTBA. Everytime I hear it, I try to sing along to THTBA.
Anyways, I love the imagery in this song. I love it to death. I wish it would have been around when I had to do a song project back in 11th grade. This one would have been a winner.
Who could honestly think of an urban city like New York in the terms of a "steel and glass canyon"?

If I had been more into u2 when I heard this song played at the Oscars, I probably would have enjoyed it more considering that Bono's voice howls "America" at the end. Right after 9/11.
It didn't win the Oscar, losing to Eminem's theme from 8 Mile "Lose Yourself." But it's still an amazing song and I can't help but love the xylophone in the background.
Award: I should be giving it to the guy on the xylophone, but Bono gets it for the lyrics. The mind-blowing lyrics.

Oh my love, it's a long way we've come
From the freckled hills, to the steel and glass canyons
From the stony fields, to hanging steel from the sky
From digging in our pockets for a reason not to say goodbye

These are the hands that built America
(Russian, Sioux, Dutch, Hindu)
Oh, oh oh, America / Hand
(Polish, Irish, German, Italian)

Last saw your face in a watercolour sky
As sea birds argue, a long goodbye
I took your kiss, on the spray of the new land star
You gotta live with your dreams, don't make them so hard

And these are the hands, that built America
(The Irish, the Blacks, the Chinese, the Jews)
Ah, ah ah, America / Hand
(Korean, Hispanic, Muslim, Indian)

Of all of the promises, is this one we could keep
Of all of the dreams, is this one still out of reach

Halle, ole
(Dream-oh-yeah)
(Oh oh-dream, oh love)

It's early fall, there's a cloud on the New York skyline
Innocence, dragged across a yellow line

These are the hands that built America
These are the hands that built America
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah America

This song makes me want to watch Gangs of New York. Mission accomplished...again.

This one isn't my favorite U2 song, but the imagery is beautiful. Bono's always good for that! :o)

First time I heard this song was the best of 90 to 200 cd, and I had not heard of Gangs of New York yet. I think it was still due to be released. So my mind jumped straight tpo 9/11. I cried like a baby! This is also one that I can rarely listen to just once. The nuances of Bono's voice suck me in every time and I love the intimacy of the video on the Best of 90 to 2000 dvd. Thanks for clearing up a few lyrics for me, like the background whispers, and Halle/ ole which i had thought was "We call it holy". Just one thing: I took your kiss, on the spray of the new land star Isn't it new life's start?

It might be. The lyrics aren't on the u2.com site, so I had to get them from an alternate.
I picked the site that had those backgound whispers that had been driving me crazy.

It's a gorgeous song.

The movie is really good too. Brutal at times, and some creative liberties were taken with the real history, but very well done.

I have to say:

I was was really annoyed that Eminem won the Oscar. Why couldn't U2 have won?

Cause everyone like contreversy.

I'm probably one of the few u2 fans that actually likes Eminem's music. Both songs were good IMO.
I'm not annoyed. I'm sure u2 will have plenty of chances in the future to take that category.

You're not the only one. I also am one of the few who like both U2 and Eminem.

I haven't really paid much attention to him to be honest. Although, I do like "My Band." It's quite hilarious. And, U2 will probably have more chances. At least, I hope they do.
