Hello Hello!!

Song of the Day @ 09:01 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: tired tired

Today's Selection is...

Gone from "Pop"

I didn't begin to like this song until very recently for some reason. I used to skip over it and now I can't. What an incredible intro by Edge with that overdrive. I like New Mix better only because I find Bono's singing much more improved, especially in the bridge. AND! Adam gets a nice little solo during the bridge in the New Mix that absolutely drives me wild. The bass guitar is much more prominent and helps tie in the song a little better.
I suppose it's one of the songs that could have been great if only they had had more time to tweak it in the studio.
Favorite lyrics:
You changed your name
Well that's okay, it's necessary
And what you leave behind you don't miss anyway.

Coincidence that their next album would be called "All That You Can't Leave Behind"?
Hmm. HMM!
Award goes to Image hosted by Photobucket.com for the bass guitar that doesn't miss a beat.
Honorable mention to Edge for the overdrive guitar.

You get to feel so guilty
Got so much for so little
The you find that feeling just won't go away.
You're holding on to every little thing so tightly
Till there's nothing left for you anyway.

Goodbye, you can keep this suit of lights
I'll be up with the sun
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down.

You wanted to get somewhere so badly
You had to lose yourself along the way.
You changed your name
Well that's okay, it's necessary
And what you leave behind you don't miss anyway.

Goodbye, you can keep this suit of lights
I'll be up with the sun
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down.

'Cause I'm already gone
Felt that way all along.
Closer to you every day
I didn't want it that much anyway.

You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy
Then you learn to like the way it feels.
You hurt yourself, you hurt your lover
Then you discover
What you thought was freedom is just greed.

Goodbye, and it's an emotional
Goodnight, I'll be up with the sun.
Are you still holding on?
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down.

On a side note: Go see Batman Begins! I'm running on 3.5 hours of sleep due to the midnight showing of it.
There's one part where an opera singer is wearing a very familiar set of devil horns. Makes you wonder if it's a coincidence or paying homage to the villian that never was.
I didn't give away anything, it's not even important in the movie.

I always thought "suit of lights" was "suit of lies." Makes sense to me, in a Donnie Darko-ish kind of way.
Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Loved this song from the beginning! OMG,yes! And the new mix- awesome!! Only to me it sounds like several recordings spliced together. If you listen carefully, Bono's voice morphs nuances that would be really unusual in one continuous recording. I find that the mystery of that brings me back to that mix over and over. And if it is spliced, it was a great idea because his voice is AWEsome! And I love the image of the suit of lights. One of my faves.

Those lyrics are my fave as well! They're actually some of my fave Bono lyrics in general. :)

u2 has a habit of doing that.

Yesterday I was listening to "The First Time" and Bono was singing about the cup of gold. I look up and this billboard says "Gold Cup."

Very trippy moment.

i love this song for it's lyrics. it's especially awesome live. i like that bono used to call it 'the fly: part 2' but i do not like the new mix on the Best Of. But that might be because Pop was my best friend for a loooong time and I prefer it to the Joshua Tree.

I'd neer heard that Bono called it "The Fly : Part 2", but that makes SO much sense to me. This song was always about what they do to preserve themselves in the group, how they close down to the outside world. Love it so much.

Ugh, I absolutely love this song! And yeah, I love the new mix even better. The lyric is already so raw, and the new mix just brings that out even more. It actually took me a while to warm up to it. I remember when they were playing it live during the first leg of Elevation and I thought it was a waste of a song in such a dense set list. But the lyrics keep bringing me back.

I read somewhere somebody's thought that Gone was Bono singing to himself about his life. I like that interpretation. It so perfectly captures the occasional impulse we all have to abandon all the rules and responsibilities of everyday life and disappear into the ether.

i must be one of the few that doesn't especially like the new mix. but this has been my absolute favorite U2 song from the SECOND i first heard it. the lyrics, just...everything. and then when i noticed bono dedicating it to hutch each time they played it...i just fell a bit more in love with it. if you listen to the inxs song elegantly wasted (hutch wrote it after a night out talking to bono), you can hear so many similarities. they were written at the same time, and it's basically like two different points of view of the same situation.

This is a bit off U2, but your comment re: Michael Hutchense reminded me that I saw a commercial the other day for a new reality show where INXS is basically auditioning for a new singer.

ugh, yeah. everytime i hear or think about that show i cringe and want to meet hte band just to yell at them. and that's saying alot seeing as they're my second favorite band. each time the commercial is on and i'm in another room, i get excited cause hutch is on, then i'm like...oh. it's just....wrong and bad on so many levels. i could go on, but my icon says enough.

Yes, INXS so rock. I was just as shocked and upset when hutch committed suicide as Bono says he was in "Into the Heart" when discussing SIAMYCGOO.
I really miss hearing their music on the countdown, but a new singer? Bad idea!

After all this time, I still have a hard time listening to their music; it's such a bittersweet experience trying to reconcile the vibrance and life that was a part of the music with Hutchense's suicide.

I'd hate to have to make the kind of choice INXS had to make: go the way of Led Zeppelin and say "without him, there is no band" or the way of Van Halen and say "all the other elements are still here, we just need a new singer". Either way, they lose. Even so, it makes me sad more than anything else to think of INXS without Michael at the mic - it can never be the same; it can never be as good.

I agree.
For two solid weeks after his death, I couldn't listen to anything except INXS because it felt disrespectful (that's not the word, but something like that) and for the longest time, I knew it was a murder because his music was always so positive. It was really difficult to come to grips with.
Still, I think going the way of Led Zeppelin is the better choice, but hey, I'm not in the band so it's not my call.

I use to think it was "suit of lies" as well. Actually sounds better that way...

I have loved this song ever since I first heard it. The New Mix only makes it better. Honestly; I love this song so much that it currently dukes it out with "Walk On" and "Yahweh" as my all-time favorite U2 song.

I've heard lots of people say that Gone is their favourite song from Pop (some people even say it's the only track they like), and I've *never* understood that. I love Pop, but for me, Gone is one of the weakest tracks which I don't often listen to. Do I like it?  Sure, it's a U2 song and I always find something to like about U2 songs. But I can't see why people go into raptures over this one, it's not half as thrilling as some of the other Pop tracks. *scratches head*

Anyway, interesting lyrics and it's nicely sung - I especially love the way Bono sings "You're taking steps that make ya feel dizzy". I'm sure I read somewhere what the "suit of lights" line is all about, but I'm buggered if I can remember what it was... looking at Google it seems to be a reference to matadors, but I forget what the significance of that is!

There's one part where an opera singer is wearing a very familiar set of devil horns.

OMG, no way?!  I hope it *is* a tribute to our favourite darling devil... it still makes me sad to think of that missed opportunity!  He would have looked great sprawled across a piano...

That would be so awesome! But I have dail-up and don't think files of that size could get through, so thank you very much for the thought. You're an awesome person. I'll just have to wait for U2 to finally realise how much the fans want a dvd release of these. :)

I hope so. But I bet it's just me being an overly obsessed person who notices *everything* in movies.
I'll ask Chris Nolan when we meet....like....never.

I love to crank this song up when Im really angry.
If any of you have read "The Gospel according to Larry" (a fun read for a u2 fan, even if its a teen fiction), the main character, Josh, says this song is "the greatest rock song ever".

One of my favorites on POP. It's a small glimpse into how I think Bono really feels about being a Rock and Roll superstar.
