Today’s selection is...
Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses? From “Achtung Baby”

Possibly my most favorite u2 song. Ever. I can’t say exactly what draws me to this song. Maybe its that it’s just catchy, or that the chorus was repetitive enough for me to sing along to, even the first time I heard it. Since it wasn’t in the “Best of” collection (how dare they!), and I didn’t have the album at the time, I heard and saw the video at launch.com. The video wasn’t too special, I would really expect something more with this song. It’s the standard u2 concert video, but it does have a nice twist at the end. I think everyone loves and remembers the “F***!” Bono shouts and then the serious “No!” before walking off camera. Even Larry motioning “cut” at the very end.
For something that was only a goof in the video, it turns out to be perfectly fitting for the song. And it’s real emotion at that.
Favorite lines:
Who's gonna taste your saltwater kisses?
Who's gonna take the place of me?

That last line in particular carries so much weight on it. It’s the line that didn’t come out of the song at first, even though it had been floating over the piece since the first chord. I’m glad I looked up the lyrics because I never really could make out what came after those lines.
The award goes again toImage hosted by Photobucket.com for the metaphors that are so strange, so oddly placed that it fits perfectly.
You're dangerous, 'cos you're honest.
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want.
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt.

You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left there on a beach.
Well you tell me things
I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach.

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Well you stole it 'cos I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cos I needed revenge.
Well you lied to me 'cos I asked you to.
Baby, can we still be friends?

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Ah, the deeper I spin
Ah, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin.
Took a drive in the dirty rainTo a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees, the river laughing at you and me.
Hallelujah! Heaven's white rose
The doors you open I just can't close.

Don't turn around, don't turn around again.
Don't turn around your gypsy heart.
Don't turn around, don't turn around again.
Don't turn around, and don't look back.
Come on now love, don't you look back.

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna taste your saltwater kisses?
Who's gonna take the place of me?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna tame the heart of thee?

Who’s gonna ride your wild horses is heartache. Nothing more, nothing less.

Quite possibly my favourite U2 song as well. It was the fist song I ever learned to play on my guitar, and it holds a very special place in my heart.

Probably my favourite song as well.

I think part of the reason it is so good lies in the placement of it on Achtung Baby - nestled in the middle of some excellent songs, it can still hold its own. And as it wasn't on the Best of... as you mentioned, it's kind of even 'cooler' to like it, if that makes sense.

I couldn't agree with you more on all accounts. Since it's not on the Best of..., it's almost like a lost jewel or something that most people forget, but the fans just adore. My favorite song is "Streets", but "WGRYWH" is a close second.

You're so right. It makes it much cooler to like it. A lost jem indeed.

I'm pathetic... I'm even addicted to the "what would become" WGRYWH tracks (Morning Child/Don't Turn Around) on the Salome bootlegs!!

*sigh*

such a dork.

Possibly my most favorite too. I love the violin part at the beginning and often just put one iPod headphone in and only listen to that

I agree!!! What an absolute gem of a song. Bono is brilliant. The temple bar mix of this song is great too-- love the acoustic guitar. Any fan of this song who doesn't know what I'm talking about, let me know and I'll e-mail you an mp3 if your server will take it.

If it's in the iTunes box set, don't worry about it.

If not, I'd love a copy.

OK, just to stir things up a bit I'll post my opinion on this song. It's my least favorite song from Achtung Baby. I remember the first time I came across someone who told me it was her favorite song: I thought, "She thinks it's better than One? Better than Until the End of the World? Better than Love is Blindness? What am I missing?" So I listened to it again a few times, doing my best to let go of my previous thoughts. But it was no good - there's something there or not there that I don't know how to define and this song just doesn't do it for me.

I felt a bit vindicated when I read in Bill Flanagan's U2 at the End of the World that Larry doesn't like it either. I believe Larry's comment was that it wasn't complete or doesn't live up to what they set out to do with it. Which perhaps explains why it's not on the Best of..., and which also perhaps explains why I can't get into this one.

In any event, while I'll probably never be able to adequately explain why, it's likely this will be a song I'll skip over 7 out of 10 times when I'm listening to Actung Baby.

The entire band ended up hating it, from what I read, because it took so many f'ing takes to "get it right".

I can't really explain why it took over my head, way back then, nor why it still owns me now... then again I never saw the gigantic appeal of Still haven't Found... one of my least favorites ever...

I love this song and the video. The lyrics are beautiful and the way he says the line "Come on now love, don't you look back." gives me the chills. In a good way.

this song means the world to me, since it had significant meaning with...someone who had significant meaning to me. I can still hear them singing it drunkenly to me over the phone, and quoting the lyrics at random moments. It especially makes sense and figures into my relationship when you look at the reasons the song was written.

Y'know, I honestly think I've only listened to this song once or twice. I usually skip over it on Achtung Baby. Just not 'memorable' for me.

It's funny... I actually started liking "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" because of its video in the "Best of" DVD. They just look really awesome in black and white especially Bono. Listening to the director's commentary while watching the video really makes me appreciate Bono's professionalism. As for the song - I used it for a one time lesson on poetry and still remember the kids listening hard for it.

Good song, pretty video, and sounds great live. Hope they get it back on the setlist in the fall. :)

*rubs hands together* Right, I've been busy for two weeks writing up my U2 gigs, so I have a whoooole lotta Song Of The Day to catch up with!!

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses... Achtung Baby is my favourite U2 album, I adore every track, so obviously I adore this song. It's a bit of an epic, very poetic lyrics, musically lush, and angsty like all the best U2 songs are!  I saw them perform this song live at Twickenham the other week (first time they'd played it on the European leg, and I think only the second time this tour), and it was magnificent.

Favourite lyrics... well, all of them really!  I guess I've always particularly liked:
"Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot / For any spirit to haunt"
"Baby, can we still be friends?"
and "Who's gonna take the place of me?" (the way Bono sang this line in the concert, to finish off the song, was wonderful!)

I also love the "Hey hey, sha la la" bits. The best part of the song is definitely the middle section, though, especially the climactic "Come on now love - don't you look back!". It's almost tearjerking.

I usually listen to the album version, but the Temple Bar Remix is also excellent. Don't like the Temple Bar Edit though.

I so very much agree! I love how he screams that last part. It's like a dare.

Oh I agree. The edit does this song no justice.
