Song Of The Day @ 09:12 pm

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: cheerful cheerful
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Grace

Today's Selection is...

“Grace” from All That You Can‘t Leave Behind.

I like this song more than I should. It seems so... Poetically Bono. Adam's bass is turned up to an endearingly loud volume, and I love, love Edge's slide guitar. "What once was hurt,/what once was friction,/what left a mark,/no longer stings,/because Grace makes beauty/out of ugly things..."

Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name

Grace...
It's a name for a girl
It's also a thought that, changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything

Grace, she's got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She's got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma, karma
She travels outside... of karma

When she goes to work, you can hear the strings
Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace...
She carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings...
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace finds beauty in everything
Grace finds goodness in everything

I absolutely adore this song. From the first moment I heard it I decided that if I should have a daughter... part of her name would be Grace.

Unfortunately, then I met my boyfriend and thus also his obsessive and disrespectful ex, named Grace. She about killed the song for me. I haven't listened to it in forever. :/

Wow. I have had the exact same thought since hearing that song. It made me want to name a daughter Grace and play this song for her all the time.

These are my fave lines. Love B.'s voice here.

I've never thought this song was all that stellar. I still listen to it, in case I change my mind one day.

Okay, Its time to open up a little bit...
Im losing my hearing, so I cant hear low sounds. I cant hear the bass on most songs, unless its rediculously loud. Like when I saw U2 live, it was my first time hearing the bass on the new tracks.
This is one of the few songs I can hear the bass without playing with the bass/treble equalizer. Thats also probably why its one of my new favorites.

aw! i was born with nerve damage in my ears, so i've never been able to hear high pitched sounds.

... not that it's generally a problem when listening to music. just in life, in general.

This song really didn't stand out to me when ATYCLB first came out. Now it isn't my favorite track, but I think a lot more of it. It's so simple and yet so beautiful.

One of my least favorite songs on ATYCLB, but hell, I still love it. :) Does that make me bad?

I confess: I think this song is dull. In theory, it sounds like it would really work, just for its nice simplicity.

But I confess: it puts me to sleep.

Grace was one of the pleasant surprises for me on ATYCLB. I wasn't expecting to like it much (having heard a preview clip), and the album as a whole disappointed me on the first listen, but Grace is one track I loved instantly. Mostly because of the bassline, it was just so soothing. I love the melody and Bono's gentle vocals, especially on the line "She travels outside of karma". My favourite bit is everything from "Grace / She carries a world on her hips" onward - it's a song that gets better as it goes on, I think.

Having said all that, I wouldn't fall over myself to recommend it to non-U2 fans, as I'm not sure they'd appreciate it. The "Grace / It's a name for a girl" line is terrible, I can't believe Bono actually put that line on the album!
