Song Of The Day @ 08:54 pm

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: creative
I'm currently hearin: U2 - The Fly

Today's Selection is...

“The Fly” from Achtung Baby.

I don’t feel like I can even fully express how wonderful I think this song is.

From Edge’s guitar, which basically steals the whole song, to Bono’s fabulous falsetto on “Love,/ We shine like a burning star/ Falling from the sky,/ tonight!” everything in this song is amazing. As much as this song showcases Bono and Edge as the melody of the band, the song is also made great by another terrific performance by Adam and Larry.

The lyrics are amazing; very poetic. My favorite verse is "It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest,/ It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success,/ Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief,/ All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief."

My favorite thing about this song is how, during the final chorus, the guitar solo is still going on beneath Bono’s falsetto wailing.

(Oh, baby child)

It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
It's no secret that our world is in darkness tonight
They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by a moon
You know I don't see you when she walks in the room

It's no secret that a friend is someone who lets ya help
It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else
They say a secret is something ya tell one other person
So I'm telling you... child

[fly voice] [fat lady voice]

A man will beg Love...
A man will crawl We shine like a falling star
On the sheer face of love We're fallin' from the sky...
Like a fly on a wall Tonight
It's no secret at all

It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief

[fly voice] [fat lady voice]

A man will beg Love...
A man will crawl We shine like a falling star
On the sheer face of love We're fallin' from the sky...
Like a fly on a wall Tonight
It's no secret at all

(Achtung Baby)

[fat lady voice]

Love...
We shine like a falling star
We're fallin' from the sky...
Tonight

[fly voice] [fat lady voice]

A man will beg Love...
A man will crawl We shine like a falling star
On the sheer face of love We're fallin' from the sky...
Like a fly on a wall Tonight
It's no secret at all

Oh yeah...

It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
The universe exploded 'cause of one man's lie
Look, yeah, I gotta go, yeah I'm running outta change
There's a lot of things, if I could I'd rearrange

One of my all time favorite lyrics from any song, ever. I just absolutely love this song. I about came unglued when they played it at my show in April.

A phonecall from hell...

This is a great song, one of my favorites on my favorite album. The Fly is a complete departure from where the band was in the 80s, and it was a good kick in the teeth to the general public for U2's first single of the 90s.
The whole band kicks ass during this song, but especially Bono and Edge. :)

While I like the original orchestration and performance if this song during ZooTV, I think my favorite is the way it is performed during the Elevation tour. It's starts out all slow and ballidy before it kicks into high gear, which I think lightly changes the tone and meaning of the song.

"You walk out into a sports wall,
lights go down,
it's a whole different scene.
Light and motion,
light and motion,
lights up the commotion inside of me.
It's hard to walk way
when you could have it all
we could have it all
we could have it all ...
But love, you shine like a burning star
fallin' from the sky tonight.
And love, you shine like a burning star
fallin' from the sky ...tonight."

I so agree. One of the highlights of the elevation DVD.

You walk into a sports hall... Lights of devotion inside of me. That's what I thought it said. LOL I'm really off on the lyrics sometimes. They really should include subtitles.

And I think "Ambition bites the nails... sing about their grief" is the most awesome truths ever spoken in a song. Everyone favorite lines!

It could be "lights up the devition", I just transcribed from an mp3. I actually haven't found the lyrics anywhere. :)

Well, it could be lights up commotion too. That would be consistant with other things he's said. :)

easily one of my favorite U2 songs in general, i just think that the way the Edge plays guitar in this one is one of the sexiest things ever, especially those first few rips right before Bono goes into singing

"its no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest"

i seem to live by those words

The lyrics of this song are so great!
My friends and I were talking about poets and creativity and I sprang them that line:
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief. All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief.

Within half a second they knew it was Bono and gave me the rolleyes again.

One of my favorites from AB. I love songs block 3-7. They could replay all day and I wouldn't be tired of them.

What you wrote pretty much covers everything I would have said! Amazing song - guitar, vocals, lyrics - argh, just TOO DAMN GOOD. The first verse is probably my favourite, lyrically, along with "Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief / All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief". The conscience line is so true, too!  I was also going to mention the same thing wydok said, about this song giving the general public a good hard kick up the backside as U2 launched unrecognisably into the 90s. WHAT a fucking single.

The Fly was one of my absolute highlights when I saw them live two weeks ago. Between the orgasmic guitar riff (which I did not stop jumping to) and the mindblowingly gorgeous ZooTV-style graphics/slogans on the huge screen, I thought my heart was going to burst with ecstasy. Quite possibly the best moment of my life.
