Song of the Day @ 09:10 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: okay okay
I'm currently hearin: Sweetest Thing - u2

Today's Selection is...

Sweetest Thing [The Single Mix] from the "Best of 1980-1990"

If there was ever a song to put a goofy looking smile on my face, it's this one. It doesn't really sound like u2 at all, but it's light and pretty and even has irregular clapping in the background. I wake up to the polyphonic tone of it on my mobile every morning.
The video is by far the most adorable thing ever. I would seriously forgive my guy for anything if he made a video like that for me. Or even write a song like this. Elephant. Come on. Riverdance! Firefighters dancing on a fire truck!
Bono looks weird in the video, coming off a bit like Elvis Costello. I didn't even realize it was him until midway through it.
The story is that Bono spent a day in the recording studio. The day just also happened to be his Ali's (his wife) birthday. Oops. So he wrote this song for her as the biggest I'M SORRY ever.

Favorite Line: You can sew it up, but you still see the tear.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com Oh he's earned it.

My love, she throws me like a rubber ball
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
But she won't catch me or break my fall.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this, I'm a raincloud
You know she wants a dry kind of love.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)

I'm losin' you, I'm losin' you
Ain't love the sweetest thing?

I wanted to run, but she made me crawl
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
Eternal fire, she turned me to straw.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
I know I got black eyes
But they burn so brightly for her
I guess it's a blind kind of love.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)

I'm losin' you, I'm losin' you
Ain't love the sweetest thing?
Ain't love the sweetest thing?

Blue-eyed boy meets a brown-eyed girl.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
You can sew it up, but you still see the tear.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this, I'm a rain-cloud,
Ours is a stormy kind of love.
(Oh, the sweetest thing.)

On a completely different note: Isn't it great when you find a normally anti-social family member who is a secret u2 fan at a boring family party?
XD

I'll be tagging all SotD entries with "song of the day". Naturally.

Ahhhhh I love this song! The story behind it, the song itself, the video, it all just cracks me up and is just so damned sweet. This song is the sweetest thing!
The bit about the black eyes always gets me. I get these freaky visuals of Ali beating him up XD
I am way too giggly for this time of the morning! But I blame Bono! It's always his fault!

And look, I made this a few days ago:

It's takeable, with credit, please.

It's really perfect for mini-movie icons, as it's all basically one really long shot. So you don't have to worry about finding a nice continuous shot to work with (which can be a major problem with some videos).

And also, I just reminded myself of something, and I'm going to tack it on here to save myself the trouble of making another comment.
The other night, the line "you can sew it up, but you still see the tear" reminded me of something in A Man And A Woman, "true love never can be rent" (with rent being the past tense of rend, meaning 'to tear').
I started thinking about it, and it seemed like an interesting connection.

I think I'd like to do something with the dog that looks like the spokesdog for pets.com. The little guy in my icon.
:D
I still haven't figured out the exact science to selecting only a section of videos, so I'm doing that rapid-fire capping (c,c,c,c,c,c,c,c,c!) with Cyberlink and then combining all images together with Animation Shop.

You should use Virtual Dub it's a free, easy to use program that automatically takes screencaps (by actually extracting the individual frames as seperate images). You can choose a start and stop point within the file, so you only have to get the portions you need.
An excellent tutorial for the program can be found here.

Bono kind of reminds me of Eugene Levy in that one.

I love this song, but I prefer the original mix on the Where the Streets Have No Name single. It's more rough and raw...I just like it more.

My favourite memory of it was when I was trying to convince my friend that she already liked U2 and just didn't know it, so I put this song on and she said "THIS IS U2??? I LOVE THIS SONG!!" and we danced around our hotel room like wild animals. It made me very happy.

Dude, yeah, there's no question what Bono's gonna look like when he's older: Elvis Costello.

I love this song. I love this song so much it hurts. It's my layout, for goodness sakes!

I have only recently heard the other mix and I still prefer this one. The other mix takes on a totally different meaning with the vocal style, I think.

I adore the lyrics and I love the simplicity of the music. Edge's guitar, with the little sharp, plucking sounds right before Bono goes into "Blue eyed boy meets a brown eyed girl..." are amazing. Also, I once had that line sung to me by a blue eyed boy. Might have something to do with my bias *G*

Such a sweet song... need to listen to it again after this! :) Speaking of the video, I *love* the part with "blue eyed boy meets brown eyed girl," and he takes his glasses off! My GOTT - he has the most gorgeous blue eyes! Whew! And the rest of the video especially the end with the halo is just ridiculously sweet! I hope they release this and the rest of the 1980-1990 videos on DVD!

Cute song and what a way to ask for forgiveness! Wow!

Ah my God, how I wish I had someone who'd write me this when they forgot my birthday! It's gorgeous!

My fave lines are

I know I got black eyes
But they burn so brightly for her
Guess it's a blind kind of love

Just so amazing, the way he sings that part!

I'd guess you are a guy.
;D

It's supposed to be lame. It's actually only supposed to be sentimental to two people. Bono and Ali.

It's just that girls in particular take pleasure in enjoying other couples's cuteness.
The lyrics aren't monumental, but that's cause it's not aimed at the fans. I'm sure Bono sneakily found a way to talk about private things with the song.

I like that the lyrics aren't "monumental", myself. I love the simplicity, the earnestness and the sort of...unemabarassed aspect of it. Sweet and simple.

A wonderful pop song, one that anyone can enjoy even if they're not a U2 fan. (I liked it before I was into U2.)  IMHO the single mix is a vast improvement on the original B-side, it's so much more polished, in a good way!

The lyrics are great... I'm not sure about people describing them as sweet and sentimental, it's a fairly sarcastic song!  He sounds like a glutton for punishment, he's addicted to her even though she gives him nothing but grief. Like all good U2 songs, it's beautiful in a really twisted way. :)

Favourite bits include the distinctive piano, the falsetto vocals over the intro, and the backing vocals just before the bridge ("Ain't love the sweetest thi-iiing? Ain't love the sweeee-teeest thing!"). I've always wondered what Bono murmurs during the bridge... you can possibly hear "I'm sorry" or "It's alright", but most of it is just inaudible.

The video is one of the best videos U2 have ever made. They cheated a bit, it's not quite one long continuous take, but it almost is - goodness knows how you go about organising something like that!  It's so sweet with all the "I'M REALLY SORRY" banners, and Bono with his flowers, and Bono with his halo and everything... plus the Massive Heads are in it, and they're the reason I got into U2 in the first place! :D
