Song of the Day @ 08:53 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: gloomy gloomy
I'm currently hearin: u2 - The Fly

Today's Selection is...

So Cruel from "Achtung Baby"

I've liked this song ever since I first heard it a few months ago. Something about the repetitive piano notes in the background and the great drum track by Larry.
Bono's voice in the chorus isn't singing but howling. It's the most appropriate thing for this song.
The chorus is short as well, but it works.
Edge for the most part hangs low in the background until 3:23 when short riffs become apparent. Adam's bass is present in the song, but isn't really highlighted until Edge joins in. That's when the song begins to pick up. Bono's notes become shorter, almost more desperate until all the music gives at the very end. Ties in perfectly with the lyrics.
Yeah, I'd say it's an excellent song.

Favorite Lines:
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie.

Her skin is pale like God's only dove
Screams like an angel for your love
Then she makes you watch her from above
And you need her like a drug.

That first part in particular is great. It's always provided such great imagery for me. It's incredible.

Oh you love that drum beat too, admit it.

// So Cruel

We crossed the line, who pushed who over?
It doesn't matter to you, it matters to me.
We're cut adrift, but still floating.
I'm only hanging on to watch you go down, my love.

I disappeared in you
You disappeared from me.
I gave you everything you ever wanted
It wasn't what you wanted.
The men who love you, you hate the most
They pass right through you like a ghost.
They look for you, but your spirit is in the air.
Baby, you're nowhere.

Oh, love, you say in love there are no rules.
Oh, love, sweet-heart, you're so cruel.

Desperation is a tender trap
It gets you every time.
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie.
Her skin is pale like God's only dove
Screams like an angel for your love
Then she makes you watch her from above
And you need her like a drug.

Oh, love, you say in love there are no rules.
Oh, love, sweet-heart, you're so cruel.

She wears my love like a see-through dress
Her lips say one thing, her movements something else.
Oh, love, like a screaming flower
Love dying every hour.
Ah, you don't know if it's fear or desire,
Danger the drug that takes you higher?
Head of heaven, fingers in the mire
Her heart is racing you can't keep up.
The night is bleeding like a cut
Between the horses of love and lust we are trampled underfoot.

Oh, love, to stay with you I'd be a fool.
Oh, sweetheart, you're so cruel.

I imagine it's because it's not as wonderful without the string arrangement in the background.
I forgot to mention that.

This is one of the first U2 songs I got into that wasn't a radio hit, if you will. I have a close friendship with this song...haha, the best line is
"Desperation is a tender trap
It gets you every time.
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie."
but all of the lyrics in this song are Bono at his best.

I love this song too! It's so different in its own way, has this melancholic feel... I don't know, just love it :)

Freshman year of college (1994-1995), I went to hang out at my old high school with the current year seniors. One of them, who was in a French class with me senior year, mentioned that a boy told her that he thought of the song "So Cruel" he he thought of her.

She asked if I knew the song. Of course, I said yes. She asked me if I remembered any of the lyrics. Oh, boy...

So I sang it to her. She wasn't happy about it. I mentioned the boy in question probably had a crush on her.

Last I heard she was a lesbian and working at a Borders book store in New Jersey.

Anyway, that's what I think of everytime I hear this song. I really like the song, though. It assumes me that most if not all of U2's love songs are about dysfunctional love.

Bono once said in an interview around the time of Pride that he was interested in the violence of love.

Obviously [looks at user name] I absolutely adore this song.

If I tried to express how much I love it... I'd write books. It's just perfect.

I would die happy if I ever heard this live.

One of the most gorgeous U2 songs ever, and a high point of Achtung Baby, if it's at *all* possible to pick out specific highlights from that album!  I've come across a few people who actually don't like this song, and all I can conclude is that they must be lacking a soul, because I cannot see how anyone could fail to be moved by it. It is BEAUTIFUL.

The piano is stunning. Bono's vocals are out of this world. The lyrics are so amazing I can almost feel physical pain when I listen to them. I can't even quote a particular favourite line, because the entire song is perfect. The falsetto parts just before the final verse and during the last line are nothing short of *breathtaking*, it's almost like a scream, as if hitting those high notes is the only way Bono can let out the sheer emotion of it all.

And there's just something meltworthy about Bono using the word "sweetheart" in any song.

I'm also gonna mention that this song is *wonderful* to harmonise with. I nearly always sing a harmony instead of joining in with Bono's notes.

And isn't it wonderful that it's such a long song?!

XD

I could seriously take another 5 minutes of this song. It's like "Lemon". I don't want it to end!
