Song of the Day @ 08:59 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: indifferent indifferent
I'm currently hearin: u2 - bullet the blue..sky.

Today's Selection is...

"Walk On" from All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Anthemic. Bold. Creative. Demanding. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...
There are not enough adjectives to describe the feelings this song provokes. It is the beating heart of the album. Perfectly nestled between this high pumping track and a song about letting go. It's the median. It doesn't leave anything behind.
I wish I had been a bigger u2 fan at the time this song was released, it probably would have meant so much more to me when it was released in October of 2001. A break from nothing but non-stop news coverage and a depression that was covering this nation as a whole.
If anything, this song proves that u2 is now. u2 is for this era. u2 is for this generation. For everyone living, right now.
It's been in my head all weekend, and I tinkered with it on guitar last night finding the chords relatively easy to find.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com For the amazing background guitar I wouldn't even dare to try.

// Walk On

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring...
And love is not the easy thing....
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on, walk on
What you got they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on...
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you've got they can't deny it
Can’t sell it, can’t buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Home… hard to know what it is if you’ve never had one
Home… I can’t say where it is but I know I'm going home
That's where the hurt is

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress up
All that you scheme…

This song came out in at a point in my life where I was the lowest I'd ever been. As cheesy as it may sound, the lyrics really spoke to me and I felt like Bono was telling me it would be okay. The song sometimes still brings tears to my eyes, it just has such a strong personal meaning to me. I have a tattoo on my wrist of the ATYCLB suitcase with the heart, and it represents this song to me.

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Those are my favorite lyrics too. :-) I absolutely love this song.

PS: You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the tattoo to share, would you? It sounds cool!

For the Lady...

(Link)

walk on was written for Aung San Suu Kyi.... the 'singing bird' who could leave in exile at any time if she give up her fight for Burma/Myanmar's liberation from the despotic government that took charge, and who keeps her under a farcical "house arrest" to this day. but she will only fly for freedom...

"home, that's where the hurt is"

Yes, every time I listen to this song I think about this woman. I think U2 have done the best job possible in making people remember her. I read somewhere that anyone in Burma caught with a copy of ATYCLB can be sent to jail...

Probably my most favorite U2 song. I see different meaning in it though. I see it as two people (lovers for argument sake), that have come to the end of their relationship. They've been through so much, but at the end of the day none of it matters, and all that's left is for them to part company.

But yeah, that's just my alternate interpretation.

This is indeed one beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. I remember it closing the concert in Vienna and it still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Priceless, really.

This might sound a bit lame, but this is the song that kept me sane in the months after 9/11. The message is beautiful and simple: No matter what, you can continue with your life because you have hope and love.

The symbol of the heart in the suitcase that goes with this song is lovely.
