U2 case against former stylist begins

28 June 2005 22:15
A former stylist with U2 has told the Dublin Circuit Civil court that items including a stetson and a pair of trousers were given to her by Bono following the Joshua Tree tour in 1987.

U2 are seeking to retrieve a number of items which Lola Cashman tried to auction in 2002.

Band frontman Bono denied the band is suing Ms Cashman because she had written an unauthorised biography about them.

Ms Cashman, 45, worked for the band for nearly two years in the 1980s.

During that time she created the band's look for their Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum tours.

The band claim the items were not hers to sell, and are suing for their return.

The stylist published the unauthorised biography of U2 last year.

The case will resume in the morning.

I heard Bono and Larry were both there. I would not want to face Larry in a courtroom, lol!

Sorry to be combatative, but why are they being so petty?

I have no idea. and no opinoin as to whether it's petty or not, since this does not give the full story and we could never really know all the details, therefore who are we to judge their decision to go to court in this matter?
They can do what they want- unless they turn gay, this fan will be right behind them! LOL

A couple points:
- Not mentioned in this article are over two hundred polaroid pictures, earrings, sweatshirts and other souvenirs.
- It's questionable that the band gave her the clothes and other items; another former stylist and wardrobe person both stated they never received such gifts.
- While the band has no problems with charity auctions, they are not fond of items being sold for personal profit.
- I believe Ms. Cashman was trying to use her unauthorized biography (which some fans say is nothing short of libel) as a form of blackmail, saying that unless she was allowed to sell the items, she would publish the book.

Everything I've heard about Ms. Cashman makes her out to be a petty, conniving, money-grubbing loon who has abused her former position with the band more than once.

Also, I guess she was claiming outrageous expenses during her time working with them.

You'd think that a decent person, even if she did have the right to, would have backed off it after she found out that the band didn't want those items sold.

I agree. She was probably using it to blackmail them.

Okay, point proven.

It's just that everywhere I've seen them talking about this its:
A video of Bono singing and then- "u2 is suing their former stylist for trying to sell a hat and a sweater".
I saw that twice yesterday on two different channels.

Love your icon!

I'm a bit disappointed that the media is omitting so many details, reducing it to two shallow parties squabbling over some old clothes.  (On the other hand, I'm glad the case isn't getting as much attention as other petty celebrity affairs.)

Love yours too!  The world needs more of Mr. The Edge.

I can't see Bono just *giving* that hat away. It's only a piece among the items this woman was trying to sell, but as Bono said, that "the hat was, indeed, an icon of sorts to many U2 fans, and its place in band history mattered." (from CNN.com) That hat belongs in a museum!!!

I know it does sound a bit petty, but the bottom line is if she took that stuff without permission, it's stealing. You don't steal from people, no matter how rich or famous they are. People have the right to keep a hold of their possessions, lol, Bono or no.
