Mojo @ 09:51 pm

onebadkite:
I finally got my hands on a MOJO magazine (and CD!). I just voraciously read through the entire article. I remember hearing 'Original of the Species' for the first time, and thinking it was Bono's ode to his eldest child. In the interview, it's said that the song is actually dedicated to Edge's eldest, Holly (Bono's god-daughter).

*waits for infinitely more informed people to discuss*

Quotes from a U2 lyric interpretation site:

"The Edge in some unknown interview: The last time I cried was listening to that song. It was a song Bono started on the last record about my daughter Holly. He's her godfather. The lyric became more universal. About being young and full of doubt about yourself. He probably won't agree, but I think it has connotations for Bono, looking back to when he was 20."

"www.u2tour.de has published an interview with U2, it is unknown if it's u2tour.de that made the interview or if they have some other source, and Bono made the following comments about the song.

it's about seeing some people who are ashamed of their bodies, in particular teenagers with eating disorders, not feeling comfortable with themselves and their sexuality. I'm just saying to them, you are one of a kind, you are the first one of your kind, you're an original of the species..."You feel like no one before, you steal right under my door, I kneel 'cause I want you some more, I want the lot of what you've got, and I want nothing that you're not, everywhere you go you shout it, you don't have to be shy about it". So it's a "be who you are", and I can't wait to play it live. Edge plays some extraordinary piano which got the complexity to the verses, to balance that anthem."

I LOVE this song. The first time I heard it, I too assumed it was for Jordan.

Actually.. **digs through entries** Here's an entry that shows just what this song does to me.

But... thanks. :-) That about sums it up.

you know that part in the middle? Bono's ribbiting. Because Holly likes frogs.

I think that is so freaking adorable.

Interesting... I had thought the same-that it was for Jordan. (What's her middle name anyway?) So what exactly did the article say? Curious minds want to know. LOL

I don't think Jordan has a middle name, she's the only one of Bono's kids that doesn't (unless it's just never been made public).

I'm sorry this took so long. I went away for a little bit... funerals, blegh. Anyhoo, I just now remembered you asked me this. Did you want to know what the article said entirely? Or just what was said about OOTS? I have time now, for either. Thanks for your patience.

Went back to it. Doesn't say much, unfortunately, it's really just a reference. But I've recreated the paragraph below...

It helps that U2 are delivering the goods better than any time in their history, touring behind a 10-million selling album that occupies a third of the set on merit. Unlike the contemporary creations of the bulk of the worlds mega-acts, this is music that functions beyond the mediated lives of its creators. You can appreciate the parallels between How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and Boy - for one thing, they're both preoccupied with growing old, both confrontational yet vulnerable - but you don't need to know that the elegaic Original of the Species is Bono's plea to his god-child, Edge's eldest daughter Holly, not to grow up too fast, or that Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own is about the singer's late father, who died in August 2001 halfway through their Elevation tour. The songs floor you just the same.

...Some things you shouldn't get too good at
Like smiling, crying and celebrity
Some people got way too much confidence baby

I'll give you everything you want
Except the thing that you want
You are the first one of your kind

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cos I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it, no

oh no
oh no, uh huh...
here comes the frog: do do do do do do (etc)

And you'll never be alone
Come on now show your soul
You've been keeping your love under control

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it...

Isn't that too cute?

That is so adorable!! That song always made me cry and now that I know it's about Holly, even moreso. Bono just seems too good to be true sometimes.
