Song of the Day @ 10:43 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: happy happy
I'm currently hearin: u2 - one

Today's Selection is...

"One/Unchained Melody" from the Live8 Concert in London.

I reuploaded it for anyone who wants to take a listen. Thanks to desert_sky for the original!

Rather than doing a review of the song and it's performance in general, I want to see your response to the speech and the songs.
If you need some help getting started, here are some basic questions:
What does One mean to you today, as opposed to when you first heard it? What is your favorite bit about this live performace? The masses singing as one voice? The additional lyrics at the end of "One"? How about the thousands of people singing "Unchained Melody" and Bono letting them take the lead midway?
Answer away! The longer the better. If you think no one is going to read it, you're wrong. I read everything.
:)

Bono talking:
So, this is our moment. This is our time. This is our chance. To stand up for what's right. We are not looking for charity. We are looking for justice. We can't fix every problem, but the ones we can, we must. 3,000 Africans, mostly children die everyday of a mosquito bite. We can fix that. We can fix that. 9,000 people dying everyday from a preventable and treatable disease like AIDS. We've got the drugs. We can help them. We've got the drugs. Dirty water. Death by dirty water. Well, we can dig wells. If you want to join us, get down on the streets of Edinburgh or anywhere else, Texas text us, call us. This phone is a dangeous little device. Eight of the most powerful men on earth are meeting on a golf course in Scotland. It's a lot at stake. We have a message for them.
This is your moment too. Make history by making poverty history.

One:
Is it getting better, do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now, you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life, when it's one need in the night.
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you darlin' if you don't care for it.

Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love and you want me to go without.
Well, it's too late, tonight to drag the past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other... one

Have you come here for forgiveness,
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your bed
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I've got.
We're one, but we're not the same.
Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again.

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should.
One life with each other: sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One, one.

Hear us coming, Lord
Hear us call Lord
Hear us knocking
We're knocking at your door.
Hear us coming, Lord
Hear us call
See us scratching
Will you make us crawl?

Unchained Melody:
Oh, my love, oh my darlin'
I've hungered for your touch
Alone, and lonely time
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God, speed your love to me
Africa.

God Bless You. Thanks for coming out. Bring justice. Thank you. Bless you. Bob Geldof.

Don't worry, it's nothing for me to do this. I transcribe for a living.
:)

A very happy July 4th to all the Americans in this community!

I think the best thing is the ability they have to inspire the crowd like that. This is one of those songs that is multi-faceted and multi-purpose. I think it's gone from my original understanding of it as a love song of sorts, to its current use as an anthem to bring people together as humanity.

Every time Bono gives a speech about his cause, you can tell it's because he *means* it, not because someone is paying him to say it. I respect celebrities like Bono, Sting, and Chris Martin, who use their celebrity to bring focus on humanitarian causes like this. I wish I could've seen Bono at the UC Law School when he spoke, but unfortunately, I'm not a law student.

I wish I had more to give to the organizations that they advocate - MakeTradeFair.com, DATA, etc - but I don't. But I do what I can. The African Well Fund happens to be my charity of choice. When I grow up (haha) and have a real adult job, I really would like to donate more to charity. I hope I can.

Oh, and the last thing Bono says is "Bob Geldof" ;)

I agree. Something different always stands out to me in this song.
The number "one" in general is this huge concept with so many levels of meaning. It's the loneliest number and the largest number at the same time.

Speeches from the heart always turn out better than anything politically fed where the politician has like 30 minutes to review what someone else wrote. You are definitely right about that one. I suppose it's that musicians like Sting, Bono and Chris Martin are already so poetic, it only makes sense that their speeches are moving and heartfelt.
Maybe they should be speech writers on the side. :)

As for donating, I don't stick to any particular charity. I donated plenty of money to the Red Cross after the Tsunami, I usually give to the homeless (when they are part of an organization known as the "Homeless Voice") and I donate to the local children's hospital. I haven't really done anything in particular for the ones u2 advocates (although I am buying some "One" wristbands. I tried to buy them on Saturday and the server was jammed. :D). But help is help.

"Bob Geldof" Thank you!

This is the best live version of the song that I've heard in years. The only live versions I've really liked were from the ZooTV tour. It just doesn't hold up to the perfection of the album version.

I'm not exactly sure what makes this performance different - is it Bono's lovely vocal? Is it that he thankfully sang "to the lepers in your bed" instead of "I did"? Is it the "can you hear us knockin" bit at the end?

Dunno. I do know it was just really lovely.

The "knocking" part in particular was amazing. I love it.

Just absolute perfection. It fitted the occasion so, so well, and made me cry in the process as I sat at home watching on the TV.

Lucky lucky lucky. I wasn't able to catch this one on TV. desert_sky is the sole reason why I heard this song.

*worships*
XD

Hopefully someone can upload a video of it later that *isn't* a torrent.
*cough cough*

He said "text us", not "Texas". Heh. *g*

I cried all the way through this song, having already cried throughout Beautiful Day and Vertigo. ;)  What really set me off was the way the entire crowd joined in as soon as he got to "One love, one life / When it's one need in the night..." - I couldn't believe the way they *all* knew it off by heart, even though loads of those people probably weren't U2 fans. I found that incredibly moving. And Bono's voice is so gorgeous lately; I've no idea how it's improved so much since the last couple of tours, but it makes me really happy.

It was nice to hear the return of the "Hear us coming, Lord..." ending, and the falsetto ooohh-ooh's - I'd been expecting them to just finish it the way they're doing on the current tour, so this was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting a snippet of Unchained Melody, either, so I was completely in pieces by the time we got that as well! Once again I thought it was lovely how the audience were all singing along, especially as there were some close-ups of people in the crowd and half of them looked as misty-eyed as me... and then Bono smiled that *huge* radiant smile which made everyone laugh... it was just one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. U2 are untouchable right now and I'm so proud to call myself a fan. :')

Whoops. Texas. Damn President. I should have known that Bono would never mention the city of Satan.

Nonetheless...
I totally agree with you on the masses singing along with Bono. I just heard "One" from Mexico City off of my iPod and it left me all shaken. There's just something so...divine about so many people singing along to that song.
It should really be a passage in the Bible at this point.

Ahhh...so that's what made the crowd laugh. I was wondering about that piece. And I was all anxious to see it in the video someone uploaded but it cut off mid-way through "One".

U2 are untouchable right now and I'm so proud to call myself a fan. :')
Same here. Even if I did jump on the bandwagon recently.
Luckily Miami is lacking in u2 fans, so I'm really the only one MY age that feels this way about them.
Hee!
