u2

in response to today's song of the day

I actually wrote this interpretation awhile back when the u2meaning comm was still up and running

hope no one minds me posting this, I just love the song so much and was pleased to see it as today's selection:

I actually wrote my own interpretation for this song awhile back:

Green light, Seven Eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don't smoke, don't even want to
Hey now, check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down
You say when he hits you, you don't mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Hey babe, is that what it is

Green light, 'go', a seven eleven is a place that's always open, os it would make sense that the narrator of the song may be talking about wandering aimlessly late at night. This seems to be about someone going through the motions of life on autopilot, maybe numb or in shock from some pain or helplessness.

Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down

You're functioning, but just barely. Don't know where you're going or what you're doing.

You say when he hits you, you don't mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Hey babe, is that what it is

Sometimes when we numb ourselves the only thing that can break through is pain. Someone might stay in a harmful or unhappy relationship because that misery can touch them even if nothing else can.

Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depend's on who's around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch to the talk shows

ANy hope the daylight could bring after the restless unhappy night is washed away in the rain or the gray morning. 'Stopped'

You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depend's on who's around

This is one of my favorite parts of the whole song. You stumble around blindly, sometimes lashing out at yourself and others, a vampire or a victim? It depends on who you're dealing with, and how they feel about your hurtful behavior

You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch to the talk shows

When we're depressed we sometimes immerse ourselves in things other than our problems. Drugs, sex, food, the media. Sometimes looking ot those to comfort us or give us hope. In the end it's nothing, just a waste of time.

And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing

The narrator of the song/story is telling the subject that they can't help them. The subject feels helpless, like no one is listening when they reach out, no one is caring, the narrator is trying to say they do care, but you can't feel it, you can't tell.

If I could stay...
Then the night would give you up
Stay...and the day would keep its trust
Stay...and the night would be enough

If I could be there for you, make you feel me, hear me, understand me then the night, the darkness closing over you would cease to do so. The day, the light would do what it's supposed to and be a saving factor. Night also signifies love, or sex. maybe a night of that could help you, free you from the demons that are chasing you (this also makes sense if you look at the movie that precluded the one this song was made for (wings of desire)

Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satelite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin

Through media the rest of the world, though 'faraway' is 'so close'. You can peer into others lives, from these beautiful romantic cities and forget your own dismal reality for a little while.

And if you listen I can't call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout, I'll only hear you

Again, media. It drowns you so you can't hear the real, more beautiful things in life. It's so very man made and materialistic that it seperates us from the spiritual (such as the angel Bono embodies in the lyric and the video for this song). You listen so hard and everything is drowned out by technology. You start to believe unbelievable things, and if you cry out for help after wishing something impossible and being disappointed, the angel can't help you, can only hear you.

If I could stay...
Then the night would give you up
Stay...then the day would keep its trust
Stay...with the demons you drowned
Stay...with the spirit I found
Stay...and the night would be enough

Not just about transcending materialist reality, but about adding humanity to the angelic. Again with the night releasing you from fear and anguish, daylight saving. 'Demons you drowned' both the horros you can overcome, and you've had to on your own w/out an angel to help, and the 'spirit I found' the angel marvelling at the strength of humanity, also love again, the night would be enough.

Three o'clock in the morning
It's quiet and there's no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground

Just the bang
And the clatter
As an angel
Hits the ground

This part is about the helplessness of the angel, and how useless they felt watching this human htey lvoed struggle and do it on their own. There's a strength i nthe human heart that the angel wants. Maybe to save themselves, maybe to save more people, the way the angel thought it should have been able to as a spiritual body. It 'falls' becoming human.
