Today's Selection is...

"All Because of You" from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

This song has been in my head ALL day! Ever since I woke up. And then I mix up the original version with the album version. gah!
This song used to frustrate the hell out of me cause I would usually blast CoBL and then this high pitched guitar note would pierce my ears.
However, it really is one of the greater songs on the album. It should be near the top of Edge's resume because that guitar break in the middle is pure genius. Especially paired with Bono's scratchy "Waaaaa!"

sapphires13 posted a while back that the "I am" from the song is really a reference to Lord. Oh Bono, you clever little elf. Get me to sing about religion without knowing it...again.
:)
Genius:
I’m not broke but you can see the cracks
You can make me perfect again

// All Because Of You

I was born a child of grace
Nothing else about the place
Everything was ugly but your beautiful face
And it left me no illusion

I saw you in the curve of the moon
In the shadow cast across my room
You heard me in my tune
When I just heard confusion

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am… I am

I like the sound of my own voice
I didn’t give anyone else a choice
An intellectual tortoise
Racing with your bullet train

Some people get squashed crossing the tracks
Some people got high rises on their backs
I’m not broke but you can see the cracks
You can make me perfect again

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am… I am

I’m alive
I’m being born
I just arrived, I’m at the door
Of the place I started out from
And I want back inside

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am

And the video of course is a favorite of mine. Awesome. They played it before the Maroon 5 concert in West Palm Beach. I must have been the only person jamming. And I don't care.

I hope you all are safe tonight. I say a prayer for England this evening.

Edge did that on purpose to make you jump. It's like, you're sitting there all mellow after a good loud run-through of City Of Blinding Lights, and then this crazy sound rips through your ears and you jump up.
It's not as bad as the gunshot at the end of the William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet soundtrack volume 2 though. This low quiet peaceful track of slow violins and soft opera, and then BANG. It was rather.. different to discover that sound effect was there while listening to it with my headphones on, half asleep.

Anywayyyy. It was me that posted about the "I Am" reference. I'd always known the song was God-centered, but it suddenly occured to me that the "I Am" meant more than originally thought.

I adore this song. It makes me insanely happy to listen to. And I must agree "I'm not broke, but you can see the cracks, You can make me perfect again" is amazing.

The video is awesome too. I wish I lived in a city where things like that happened! I always start cracking up toward the end though, thanks to The Edge doing his stompy thing XD <3 The Edge

I should have known it was you. You keep popping up everywhere lately.
:)

I know what you mean. For being one of the 4 most populated cities in the U.S.: NY>>L.A.>>Chicago>>Miami, we totally blow.

I adore it! One of my faves from the album. I love the lyrics and it's a really good song for sticking on and turning up LOUD! They played it at the gig I went to and made me very happy, hehe.

I'm in Scotland, and I'll take your prayer if that's ok, because I am very scared after what happened today!

Not one of my favorites on the album, but I think it rocks much harder live. Now, thanks to hearing many live versions, I crank it up when it comes on.

It's like the album version falls just a teensy bit short of rocking. A small part of it is my annoyance of the "Allllll because of you" (the second time) in the chorus. The notes sound off to me, and I think it's on purpose, but it bugs the shit out of me.

I love picturing Bono rocking the tambourine when I hear it, though.

In the alternate version, Bono sings the first and second lines exactly the same. It's not as much fun. It falls flat.
I need the "Alllllllll because of you" to make it be complete. Even if it sounds irregular.

Totally agree with you. I don't care for the alternate version at all.

Excellence! I'd love to hear the Spanish versions. I do that to songs for fun. I did it to "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers and "In The End" by Linkin Park.
I annoy the hell out of everyone.

I read A.B.O.Y. as "a boy" and I was like, huh?

Awesome song, although it took a few listens to fully grow on me. I was pleasantly surprised at how rockin' it was - the title had been leaked months in advance of the album coming out, and I just assumed it was going to be some embarrassingly watery ballad, which it definitely wasn't!!  I was also highly impressed by the lyrics in the verses, they're both clever ("I'm not broke but you can see the cracks") and funny (I laughed out loud when I heard the intellectual tortoise line!). I was beginning to think Bono had lost his lyrical touch after some dodgy lines on ATYCLB and Electrical Storm, but *damn* he was right back on form with this one. The only thing that let it down a little was the chorus... I noticed the double meaning of "I Am" straight away, which I thought was a nice touch, but overall the chorus sounded a bit repetitive and uninspired (especially knowing that not everyone would pick up on the subtle twist). I think that's why I initially didn't listen to ABOY as much as other tracks on HTDAAB, and started to forget how good it was.

Thankfully I rediscovered it before too long, and now I love it!  Edge really is on fire, I love the piercing intro and that mental guitar solo in the middle. I always have to turn this song up loud and do some headbanging to it. *g*  And I absolutely adore Bono's "Oh oh oh / Heeyyyy ye-eah..." bits, and ESPECIALLY his Paul McCartney-esque "Whaaaaa!" leading into the aforementioned mental guitar solo. Cool as fuck!!  I'm also a big fan of Bono's layered vocals. Oh, and I really like the lyrics "I'm at the door of the place I started out from / And I want back inside" - they remind me of a poem I wrote several years ago.

Don't like the video, though I seem to be the only person who doesn't. I'm just not that impressed by performance videos, I find them a bit boring, and it annoys the hell out of me that the music is drowned out by crowd screaming all the way through it!!  I did enjoy seeing the song performed live at the second London gig though, I wasn't expecting it to be played so near the start of the show, and they'd dropped it altogether the night before. It was impressive how well the audience sang along with "A-a-all because of you" even though it's got those weird notes. *g*

The alternate mix of the song isn't up to much, it has some interesting lyrics and pleasant moments, but the chorus sounds worse than ever!
