Awesome song, although it took a few listens to fully grow on me. I was pleasantly surprised at how rockin' it was - the title had been leaked months in advance of the album coming out, and I just assumed it was going to be some embarrassingly watery ballad, which it definitely wasn't!!  I was also highly impressed by the lyrics in the verses, they're both clever ("I'm not broke but you can see the cracks") and funny (I laughed out loud when I heard the intellectual tortoise line!). I was beginning to think Bono had lost his lyrical touch after some dodgy lines on ATYCLB and Electrical Storm, but *damn* he was right back on form with this one. The only thing that let it down a little was the chorus... I noticed the double meaning of "I Am" straight away, which I thought was a nice touch, but overall the chorus sounded a bit repetitive and uninspired (especially knowing that not everyone would pick up on the subtle twist). I think that's why I initially didn't listen to ABOY as much as other tracks on HTDAAB, and started to forget how good it was.

Thankfully I rediscovered it before too long, and now I love it!  Edge really is on fire, I love the piercing intro and that mental guitar solo in the middle. I always have to turn this song up loud and do some headbanging to it. *g*  And I absolutely adore Bono's "Oh oh oh / Heeyyyy ye-eah..." bits, and ESPECIALLY his Paul McCartney-esque "Whaaaaa!" leading into the aforementioned mental guitar solo. Cool as fuck!!  I'm also a big fan of Bono's layered vocals. Oh, and I really like the lyrics "I'm at the door of the place I started out from / And I want back inside" - they remind me of a poem I wrote several years ago.

Don't like the video, though I seem to be the only person who doesn't. I'm just not that impressed by performance videos, I find them a bit boring, and it annoys the hell out of me that the music is drowned out by crowd screaming all the way through it!!  I did enjoy seeing the song performed live at the second London gig though, I wasn't expecting it to be played so near the start of the show, and they'd dropped it altogether the night before. It was impressive how well the audience sang along with "A-a-all because of you" even though it's got those weird notes. *g*

The alternate mix of the song isn't up to much, it has some interesting lyrics and pleasant moments, but the chorus sounds worse than ever!
