Is it me, or is that new song out by Coldplay (the one with the video where they're all silhouettes in this room of multicoloured lit-up walls) a HELL of a lot like COBL, both in sound and video? I just got that impression the first time I saw the video for that song. I also remember hearing "Clocks" and saying, "If they're ever asked who their influences are, I'll eat my favourite boots if U2 isn't on top of the list." (1. My boots look better when not eaten. 2. I don't like the taste of boots.)

What's that song called, anyway?

Speed of Sound, and yes, it's a complete rip-off. Coldplay stopped being original when they released A Rush Of Blood To The Head.

First thing I thought when I saw the video.
The songs sound similar, also.

Coldplay is clearly copycat-ing U2. Sad that they lost all of their originality after the first album.

I so agree. In fact i made a post about it not long ago. it's what i can't stand about coldplay, a total lack of originality. And it's a shame, they could be a good band if they'd be themselves, and stop putting on airs or diguises whatevr you want to call it. It shows a lack of self-confidence. If they can't be confident in themselves why should we be confident in them? end rant. :)

They also totally ripped off one of Kraftwerk's guitar riffs...
http://internetcommentator.typepad.com/internet_commentator/2005/06/derivative_rubb.html

And, they used what sounds peculiarly similar to the keyboard backing sounds from Running To Stand Still on the ZooTV tours in a few of their songs.

they gave credit to Kraftwerk. read the cd jacket. they sampled the song, they didnt rip it off. personally Coldplay is one of my favorite bands and i see them following in U2s footsteps. THey make beautiful music. end of story.

I love Coldplay. They are like U2 only less rock-y. So what if they sound the same, Coldplay's lyrics are completely different, Chris Martin's voice has a completely different tone from Bono's and the majority of their songs are piano driven.
Besides the fact that Speed of Sound is similar to Clocks (cause of the piano structure, not even the keys) the songs are completely different.
Coldplay's video came out over a month, while U2 was filming CoBL, if I remember correctly.

And who cares? Their similarities only prove their equal awesomeness.
:)

I haven't heard a whole lot of Coldplay, although I like a few of their songs. I remember when I first heard them I told everyone that they sound like U2 and they all thought I was crazy.

A lot of Coldplay-haters here. . .

(Link)
Coldplay have always been admitted fans of U2, and isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery? Lighten up kids. . .

Actually, if you REALLY want to talk about what "Speed of Sound" is based off of, they have openly said on MTV that the song is based on "Running up The Hill" by Kate Bush. They are the first one to admit it, in fact they have said many times that they are honest enough to admit exactly where a song came from. If you listen to Kate Bush's song, you'll see it's no stretch.

Lighten up kids. . . Where were you guys when U2 was borrowing from "Keep Me Hanging On" for Vertigo?

lots of coldplay bashing going on!
it's no secret chris martin is a big fan of bono and u2. I can't see any resemblence of speed of sound to city of blinding lights, personally i prefer speed of sound.

My husband got X&Y for me a few weeks back. I had it on in one room while doing chores in another room - tuning in and out to the music. At one point I actually thought, "Huh, that's weird: that sounds like U2 but I could swear I put Coldplay on." I was halfway to the player before I realized it WAS Coldplay. Then I saw the Speed of Sound video and I immediately thought of U2's stage set (plus that little pose of the band members at the end of the video - where have you seen that before?).

Anyway, the thing is, I've long grumbled about the fact that U2's this great band and yet no one has seemed to have been influenced by them. Now, here's a band that's clearly influenced by them and it pissed me off!

I don't understand why I don't feel flattered for U2; instead I feel like they've just been ripped off.

Argh, Coldplay. I HATE Coldplay. I'm totally not saying this to annoy people, I just can't say anything else, lol! Sorry if you like them anyone! I think though there's a difference between being influenced by someone and copying someone (badly, at that). I think Coldplay have started to do the latter, and it hacks me off because I quite liked their early stuff. I don't see the point of turning themselves into a dodgy U2 tribute band. I mean fair enough people like Chris Martin's voice but I agreed with the guy in one of the papers here who said that they can copy the U2 sound all they like, but Chris Martin lacks the voice and lyrics of Bono. It's not because I'm a U2 fan that I agree, I just agree anyway. I even prefer moles digging in holes ;)

I can't see any resemblance between Speed Of Sound and City Of Blinding Lights, but it's certainly true that Coldplay are trying to achieve U2's greatness purely by ripping them off. And that's why they will never be in U2's league, because they can't innovate on their own. (Also because Chris Martin has a yucky voice and his lyrics are crap, but not everyone seems to have noticed that.)

Coldplay have always been overrated, but I don't think they'd be getting this level of hype if he hadn't married Gwyneth Paltrow.

Yes yes yes! *loves you* Lol! You said what I've thought for ages (especially about Chris Martin's voice, it makes me want to hit something, preferably him). I don't think the songs sound totally alike either, although whenever I hear the beginning of Speed of Sound I keep thinking it MIGHT be a U2 song, which shows the sound's hardly different. But even people who aren't U2 fans usually know something about the others apart from Bono, but in Coldplay I wouldn't have a clue.
