Today's Selection is...

"I Will Follow" from Boy

If you were around in 1980, never hearing of U2, picked up Boy and listen to the first track on it, you would be an instant U2 fan. So much so that this song still holds up today. The song itself is craziness, conforming more to the title Out of Control. It's fast paced, energetic, danceable (just don't dance like Bono) and popish.
I annoyed my friends one day when the "your eyes make a circle, your eyes, yo-yo-your eyes, your eyes, yo-yo-yo yo your eyes!" part got stuck in my head and I kept repeating it subconsciously.

The song is a homage to Bono's mother, whom he lost in 1974, when he was 14.

Hands down, their best video ever. I don't think I've ever laughed so much by myself. I can reupload the video, if you'd like, or you can watch a small clip of it here. Click on "video"
Aww, it's cute Edge! Dance like no one is watching! It's the entire song, really.

// I Will Follow

I was on the outside when you said
You needed me
I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see.

A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by the hand
If he stops to think, he starts to cry
Oh why?

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.

I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found.

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.

Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
Your eyes, your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes.

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.

On a completely seperate issue: What's the html coding for wrapping text around a picture? Does anyone know?
:)

Wrapping text around a square picture that's aligned to the left or right of a page?
[img src="URL HERE" align="LEFT or RIGHT"]

I hope that's what you mean.  Unfortunately, I have no quick links to pages that use that code.

I'm not sure why, but I always thought of this song as slightly depressing even before I knew anything about his mother's death.  Despite that personal interpretation, it is addictive and remains one of my favorite songs from their early years.

Like if I started typing text after the [img] tag, it would show up right next to the top right corner of it and then continue alongside the picture until it reached the last line, where it would be underneath.
Kinda how newspapers are?

I imagine using a table would do it. But don't ask me how, I'm hopeless.

Yup!  That's exactly what that little line of code will do.

God- Bono's dancing...if you can even call it that. It was more like spastic flails. Nevertheless, it was totally cute.

At least they know...

Edge's guitar on this song makes me weak in the knees.

One of the best U2 songs to dance around like a nut and rock out to.

And when pressed recently to name my favorite song, period. by any artist/band, I had to choose this one.
There is never a time when I am not in the mood to hear this song.

Love it!

I LOVE THIS SONG!
The video alone is almost enough; Bono's dancing is endless entertainment.

The "Your eyes make a circle!" line is a running joke in my household. My mother, who's the first generation U2 fan, and I always get into arguments on how someone's eyes can make a circle and whatnot.

Ooh, I really have to listen to this now!

can i be contrary? this is one of the first U2 songs I heard -AFTER i heard Joshua tree...thank goodness i heard JT first! I dont mind the song now that i'm older, but back when i heard it i really didnt like it - too raw i guess...to visceral. Now i understand it better and so can listen.

I never knew it was about Bono's mom. You learn something new every day.

Still, the song rocks so hard!

No no! No ignorance!

That's what the SotD is for. To learn something new.
:)

Half the stuff I post is things I find out about at the moment, while I'm posting the song.

I really like this song. They played it at my concert, I was so happy to hear it! I wasn't even born, or conceived, when this song was first around, which is kinda weird, lol - but I can certainly appreciate its brilliance now!

Hehe. Well I was born in 1983 - six months before I was born, U2 actually played my home town (Dundee), something I don't think they've done since. I wish they would come back now!

I know, no fair, I say we demand they return for a tour of ridiculously small venues ;) and let us have first tickets! I went to the hall in town where they played, a couple of months ago for another concert and I was looking at it in a totally new light, cause U2 had once been there! Yeah, I'm sad, oh well.

This is such a fantastic song, I love the playful energy of those Boy tracks, complete with Bono's baby voice. :D  Am I the only person who can't help doing hand actions to the line "I was on the inside when they pulled the four walls down"?!

My favourite part of the song is definitely the "Yourrr eyes, y-y-your eyes!" bit that you mentioned, I LOVE singing that. *g*  I also love all the random sound effects they used on the track, especially the bottle smashing at the end, which is such a perfect climactic moment.

danceable (just don't dance like Bono)

Hahaha... but doing the BonoDance to I Will Follow is fun! :D  Such a funny video.

I was pretty thrilled to get this song live at Twickenham, I prefer it to the Boy tracks they played on the first leg, and it made a nice change from Out Of Control which I heard on the last tour. :)
