Song of the Day @ 10:17 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: pensive pensive
I'm currently hearin: Fast Cars - u2

Today's Selection is...

"Fast Cars" from How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

It's too bad that when I bought HTDAAB, there was no version with this on it. If this song doesn't make you feel like you are in the middle of a desert in Mexico, something like the Vertigo video, then I have no clue what does. I think I heard 3 guitars in there at one point.
Plus it has the album title in it!
It's not as "rock" as the original verison, "Xanax and Wine". "Fast Cars" has that bullfight sense to it.

I see why it's not in the wide release of HTDAAB, as it really doesn't fit in the rest of the cd. I think "Xanax and Wine" would have fit in though...I actually prefer "Xanax and Wine" to "Fast Cars".

Image hosted by Photobucket.com Edge actually gets the "vocal" award in this song because the harmony/background vocals in this song are awesome.

My cell is ringing
No ID
I need to know who's calling

My garden's overgrown
I go out on my belly crawling
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news
To get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your face in a locket
Picture in my pocket
I take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
Will do me no good

I'm going nowhere
Where I am it is a lot of fun
There in the desert to dismantle an atomic bomb
I watch you shadow box
Check the stocks
I'm in detox
I want the lot of what you've got
What you've got can make this stop

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
Take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
Will do me no good

Child inside

Don't you worry 'bout your mind
Don't you worry 'bout your mind
Don't you worry 'bout your mind
Don't you worry 'bout your mind

You should worry 'bout the day
That the pain it goes away
You know I miss mine sometimes

The size is much too big

There is no fiction
That will truly fit the situation
I'm documenting every detail
Every conversation
Not used to talkin' to somebody in the body
Somebody in a body,
Somebody in a body

Any idea on what it's all supposed to mean?

Oh my God that is SO spooky! I was intending to post a topic here today regarding whether people preferred Fast Cars or Xanax! :| *scared* Lol!

Yes, I much prefer Xanax, I have to say, it's got much more bite and I adore the guitar. Fast Cars is also good though - I'm in the UK so we got that on the album anyway *feels special* But if I could replace it with Xanax I'd be one happy person ;)

Love, love, love this song!!!! Love the beat, the sound; everything about it.

Definitely agree that "Xanax and Wine" is better. :)

I've heard from several places that it's about the "state" Bono was in after the death of his dad... there's a lot in the song that could defenitely back that up, but it's one of those that could be read as many things i think ...

I think I prefer Xanax and Wine, but I do love the Spanish/Mexican flair of Fast Cars.

Hope you don't mind but here's the lyrics to Xanax and Wine, just cause I think it's interesting what was kept in Fast Cars and what wasn't.

My cell is ringing, no ID
I want to know who’s calling
My garden’s overgrown
I go out on my belly’s crawling
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news to get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
Take a pill to stop it

Take me, save me from myself
I know that you’ve been good to me
Now I need you not to be
Wake me, I fear I can’t be asleep
I’m buying things I cannot afford
I’m on a high diving board
Two drugs keeping me dry
Xanex and wine

I’m going nowhere
Where I am, it is a lot of fun
There in the desert
To dismantle an atomic bomb
I watch you shadow box
Check the stocks, I’m in detox
Want a lot of what you got
What you got can make this stop

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
Take a pill to stop it

Take me, save me from myself
I know that you’ve been good to me
Now I need you not to be
Wake me, I fear I can’t be asleep
Try not to look so bored
You’re buying things you cannot afford
I got your drive, I know you want my
Xanex and wine

Don’t you worry ‘bout your mind
Seems I worry all the time
Don’t you worry, you’ll be fine
You should worry ‘bout the day
That the pain, it goes away
You know, I miss mine sometimes

There is no fiction
That will truly fit this situation
I’m documenting every detail
Every conversation
Not used to talking to somebody in the body
Somebody in a body
It’s somebody in a body
In a body there’s somebody
Somebody in a body
Somebody, somebody, somebody
It’s somebody in a body
Somebody in a body
Somebody in a body there’s somebody

AACK!
I was going to do this song for Friday's SOTD!

Cool, though. I do like Xanax and Wine and Fast Cars about equally.

:D

LOL, you've caught many of my songs on your days. Desire, Trip Through Your Wires, Bullet the Blue Sky...

This is really the song of the week then, isn't it?
XD

I know what you mean. I just made a u2 cd mix tape and I put them both on it. Sometimes I want to wear a silly moustache and listen to Fast Cars and sometimes I want to rock the freak out to Xanax and Wine.
Those two songs alone were worth the $100 Complete u2 box set.

The production of Fast Cars is ten times better than Xanax and Wine, and it also feels more polished. I think I like it better for the Arabic-sounding guitars (and its better production), but Xanax and Wine rocks too.

This is, hands down, my favorite song on the album (although, city of blinding lights comes in a close second).

The 'vibe' of the song reminds me of Achtung - not the actually sound, but the lyrics and the overall feel of the song. Typical story of guy-gets-all-he-ever-wanted-only-to-find-out-he-doesn't-want-it. It's all twisted up and manic. I love it :)

Ah yes, Fast Cars. Before I got HTDAAB, a friend in England sent me a bunch of tracks from it (which is why I fell in love with U2), and Fast Cars was one of them.
So when I did decide I wanted the album, I was adamant that I get the UK version, and I did.

There's just something great about the lyrics, this crazy song about this paranoid person. Paranoid and scared of the world, but longing for love anyway.

I love the crazy feel of the music as well. This song is just great.

I do love Xanax And Wine, and tend to prefer listening to it, I prefer the lyrics of it. But I really love the feel of Fast Cars.

I haven't had the pleasure of hearing Xanax and Wine yet.
*blushes*
I'm quite ashamed of that fact.
I really love Fast Cars! I'm glad that you acknowledged Edge's vocals. He does a good job of making the song better but not overpowering Bono. It's a very delicate balance.
