Song of the Day @ 10:17 am

I'm currently feelin: pensive pensive
I'm currently hearin: Fast Cars - u2

Today's Selection is...

"Fast Cars" from How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

It's too bad that when I bought HTDAAB, there was no version with this on it. If this song doesn't make you feel like you are in the middle of a desert in Mexico, something like the Vertigo video, then I have no clue what does. I think I heard 3 guitars in there at one point.
Plus it has the album title in it!
It's not as "rock" as the original verison, "Xanax and Wine". "Fast Cars" has that bullfight sense to it.

I see why it's not in the wide release of HTDAAB, as it really doesn't fit in the rest of the cd. I think "Xanax and Wine" would have fit in though...I actually prefer "Xanax and Wine" to "Fast Cars".

Image hosted by Photobucket.com Edge actually gets the "vocal" award in this song because the harmony/background vocals in this song are awesome.

Olé!Collapse )

Any idea on what it's all supposed to mean?

Yayyy, this is one of my absolute favourite songs off HTDAAB. I'm *so* glad they included it on the end of the album, because even though I think Yahweh is an excellent closing song, I suspect that last line would have left things on a slightly bittersweet note. It's much more fun to end the album flamenco dancing and yelping like a lunatic! :D

Brilliant, energetic, unusual. I just love the lyrics, they always make me think of ZooTV:
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news to get to know the enemy

...brings to mind...
"DV walls, video walls, CDI, DVE, the miracle of Chroma Key, the latest and greatest in software, hardware and menswear..."
and also
"I gave you Bill Clinton, I put him on CNN, NBC, C-SPAN... too tall to be a despot, but watch him closely."

I enjoy the flirtatious tone of the lines "All I want is a picture of you / All I want is to get right next to you", and the conscious decadence of "I know these fast cars... will do me no good!". This song makes me grin. The line "They're in the desert to dismantle an atomic bomb" works really well, too - who'd have thought you could create a catchy lyric out of such an unwieldy title?!

Other good bits: Bono's little "uh-huh!" just before the final verse, and his tuneful wailing at the end of the song. It's just a great little track!  I was so hoping they'd play it live as part of an acoustic set, but sadly that didn't happen.

Re: Fast Cars vs Xanax And Wine, I somewhat prefer Fast Cars, maybe because I heard it first and therefore it feels like the "right" arrangement. It's also a bit more polished and certainly more distinctive than X&W. Nevertheless I do adore X&W as well, partly because of the groovy extra lyrics, but mostly because OMFG can you believe Bono's still got that kind of falsetto in him!!! *melts* *dies* *dies again* guh

Never heard "Xanax and Wine" but I love "Fast Cars." Particularly the "your face in my pocket" lines.

Both are great songs, but I like Fast Cars just a little bit more than Xanax and Wine.
