Hello Hello!!

I Heart Edge @ 06:28 pm

onebadkite:
I just read the article featuring The Edge in Guitar World. Man, I do not understand guitar terminology at all. Effects pedal meatball delay amps with shimmer on a Fender.... huhwha? (Of course you know I just threw a bunch of words together, do NOT expect that to make sense)

But apparently what makes The Edge The Edge is his use of delays in live shows. Anyone care to explain it to me?

I'm still learning chords.
:P

Did he really say "meatball"? Everything else I've heard before in reference to guitars.

It all makes sense to me! MWAHAHA. LOL no really it does. I've only been playing guitar, actually playing (not just messing around) for like 6 months but I love effects. I've purchased many of the effects (or my uncle owns them) things that he talks about so it's pretty simple.

I'm rambling and I'll explain later when I can actually look at the interview and see what you're seeing.

I would love to explain it!

A central part of The Edge's signature sound is his use of delay. Delay is simply a guitar effect (you can get the effect in individual stomp boxes, multi-effects pedals, and even on amplifiers). The effect takes the notes you've just played and repeats them, so it sounds like an echo. You can control everything about it - the time in milliseconds before each repeat, the number of repeats, the intensity of the repeat, etc. While it sounds simple, it takes a considerable amount of skill to use delay properly. The Edge is a master of it. Some of his best displays with delay can be found in songs like Where The Streets Have No Name, Acrobat, When I Look At The World, A Day Without Me, The Electric Co., City Of Blinding Lights, Bad, and New Year's Day (I'm probably leaving a few out, but those are the best, in my opinion). Try to play any of those songs without delay, and you'd just look like a fool.

Edge started out with an Electro Harmonix Memory Man Deluxe, then moved on to the Korg SDD-3000 (which I think he's still using today, though I must check on that.) After having a look at the video that came with the magazine, I see that he must use a Boss DD-5 Digital Delay pedal, which, incidentally, is the same one I use!

Er, I'm rambling now...

The Boss pedal is used on occasion, I meant to say. It's not very reliable, so Edge certainly wouldn't use it for his main stuff, heh.

Ah, so that explains it. I recognize Edge's style through the "ringing" quality of the guitar that shows up especially in The Joshua Tree.

Very well put.

IMO, Bad is by far the best example of the delay effect used to perfection.

In honor of this post, I picked up my guitar and sucked at it again.

Yay!
But if anything, IF ANYTHING, I can play "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheel anytime, any place.

I just read the article last night and was in the same boat as you. I'm glad that someone else admitted to being completely ignorant to the guitar lingo. I could kind of grasp most of it but some might as well have been greek!
He's so intelligent! That smartypants stuff is really sexy to me.
Does it make you want to take lessons just in case you ever get the change to jabber on with him?
