Song of the Day @ 03:16 pm

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: ecstatic ecstatic
I'm currently hearin: original of the species - U2

Today's Selection is...

"Original of the Species" from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

What a extremely cute song. It's advice written in a great little tune, exceptionally sung and played.

Okay rather than go into detail re-explaining everything...
Quoth sapphires13: Edge:"The last time I cried was listening to that song. It was a song Bono started on the last record about my daughter Holly. He's her godfather. The lyric became more universal. About being young and full of doubt about yourself. He probably won't agree, but I think it has connotations for Bono, looking back to when he was 20."
Quoth fluidwhispers: You know that part in the middle? Bono's ribbiting. Because Holly likes frogs. I think that is so freaking adorable.
Me too. I never thought about as ribbiting, but it makes sense. Even the guitar ribbits. XD

Ribbit.
"Discussion post"

A great little number. It should have really been placed earlier in the album rather than at the end when it begins to lose it's luster.

//Original of the Species

Baby slow down
The end is not as fun as the start
Please stay a child somewhere in your heart

I'll give you everything you want
Except the thing that you want
You are the first one of your kind

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cos I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it

Some things you shouldn't get too good at
Like smiling, crying and celebrity
Some people got way too much confidence baby, baby

I'll give you everything you want
Except the thing that you want
You are the first one of your kind

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cos I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it, no
Oh no, oh no no no
(Here's your father)

Didit, didit, didit, didit, didit, didit, didit, didit
Didit, didit, didit, didit, didit, didit, didit
Sugar come on
Come on now show your soul
You've been keeping your love under control

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it (no)
Everywhere you go you shout it (on high)
Oh my my

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cos I want you some more
I want you some more, I want you some more

Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no

Mysterious ways indeed. I picked this song for today last Thursday and this morning, I hit "shuffle" on the u2Pod and it's the very first song played. ^_^

Woo hoo, I inspired a SOTD with a post! (just let me have my moment...)

When I first got HTDAAB, I would've agreed with you, about losing it's luster toward the end. But I don't think I do any more. I'm growing fonder and fonder of the unreleased tracks that twiddle at the end of U2 albums.
One, Bad, and Kite will always, always be my faves. But the more I listen to The Ground Beneath Her Feet, If You Wear That Velvet Dress, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World (I hated that song originally), When I Look At The World, The First Time, New York, etc., the more I like them.
So now I'm also growing fonder of A Man and A Woman - Yahweh. To me, One Step Closer, is just misplaced. That's the only song that I'm 'losing' my fondness of. I just wanna hear Crumbs live. :-)

Regarding the frog doo-doos frog reference, you can actually hear him say "Hear comes the frog," if you listen closely. So fun, finding these little gems. :-)

^I thought that it was 'fluidwhispers' saying "hear comes the frogs," not an actual Bono quote, until I heard the song again.

I love this --

Says Bono. haha I love him.

Anyway, this song is completely adorable. Not my favorite, but I appreciate the lyrics and the meaning behind it.

I loveeeeeeeeee this song! I'm 20, and it's done it's intended job with me. When I listen to it, I get really happy, and learn to love myself a little more than I did before.

I'm still convinced he's saying "here's your father" and that it's "beauty" over and over again, rather than ribbiting, or even random noises. **stomps** I doubt I'd change my mind about that even if Bono told me otherwise, because it's so perfect in my mind that way.

YES. I love this song. It's always seemed a bit Beatles-ish to me, but that just makes me like it more.

A lot of "psychic" things seem to often happen to the Songs Of The Day, don't they?

Ohhhh this is such a wonderful song. HTDAAB is my second favourite U2 album and this is one of the strongest tracks, I hope they release it as a single. It's just so gorgeous from beginning to end - I totally agree with Bono that the unusual structure really works, it's a big sweeping epic that just grows and grows. Beautiful melodies, tender and passionate vocals, lovely lyrics - this song has it all!  I love singing along with it, especially as it suits my range extremely well. The fake strings inject this gentle ballad with real grandeur, while the "frog" bit prevents the song from taking itself too seriously and becoming mawkish. It's such a feelgood track - anyone who doesn't end up with warm fuzzy feelings and a big smile on their face must have a heart of stone!

Favourite lyrics:
"I kneel... 'cos I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not
"

Such a sweet song. I really love it.

I agree its probably too far down the album track listing. It probably suffers as a result. Still its gonna be the next single with a reworked version. Cant wait to hear that!

what's the deal with the frog thing? did bono actually make a comment somewhere about holly liking frogs and that being a "ribbit"?

I'm gonna have to go with it's 'here comes the frog'. After listening to it closely the sound where 'frog' is appears to be monosyllabic (yay big word!) which makes me believe it is in fact 'frog'.

Before this thread I thought he was just saying "doot doot!" over and over again.

Actually, it's really hard to tell. After listening to it a couple more times I'm not sure anymore! Personally I hope it is "here comes the frog".
