Song Of The Day @ 05:31 pm

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: amused amused
I'm currently hearin: U2 - A Man And A Woman

Today's Selection is...

“A Man And A Woman” from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

This song has the distinction of being one of my favourite tracks off of HTDAAB, which is hard to say because I’ve grown to love them all. I seem to enjoy the tracks on albums that are labeled as “fillers” for some reason, “Trip Through Your Wires,” “Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World,” and “Wild Honey,” to name a few. But I honestly don’t know how this song came to be labeled a “filler” when it’s such a lovely little track.

Little sister, don't you worry about a thing today,
Take the heat from the sun
And little sister
I know that everything is not okay,
But you're like honey on my tongue

No. I can't even pick my favourite lyrics. I love them all. And especially the break and ending.

And oh. Bono's vocals. The guitar. The melody. The bass and the drums. Everything. So beautiful.

More psychic SOTD occurrences: I chose this song on Friday for the SOTD today, and as I was walking home from work (almost having a heatstroke, I might add, darn New Orleans summers,) my neighbours were out on their porch playing this song. I was very happy.

Little sister, don't you worry about a thing today,
Take the heat from the sun
And little sister
I know that everything is not okay,
But you're like honey on my tongue

True love never can be rent
But only true love can keep beauty innocent

No, I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
No I could never take a chance
'Cos I could never understand
The mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

You can run from love
And if it's really love it will find you
Catch you by the heel
But you can't be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?

I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
And you're the one, there's no-one else
That makes me want to lose myself
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

Brown eyed girl across the street
On Rue Saint Divine
I thought 'This is the one for me,'
But she was already mine
You were already mine

Little sister
I've been sleeping in the street again
Like a stray dog
And little sister
I've been trying to feel complete again
But you're gone and so is God

The soul needs beauty for a soul mate
When the soul wants... the soul waits...

No, I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
For love and faith and sex and fear
And all the things that keep us here
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

You'll see
You'll see
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?

Hmm, have to say it's the only song off the album I can't get into. But, I will promise to have another go, because often I like songs I used to not like!

I love this song.

You live in New Orleans? I've wanted to visit New Orleans for quite some time now.

Yep.
It's a lovely, amazing city... most of the time. Even the "bad" parts have a certain charm about them.

We always like to think that the song "Desire" is really about the street called Desire here. Shotguns and that. :D

I honestly don't know how this song came to be labeled a “filler” when it's such a lovely little track.

My thoughts exactly. The whole album impressed me straight away, but this was one of the tracks that really stood out as stunning - I'm in total disbelief at the number of people who don't seem to like it. Especially as some people actively *hate* it and have claimed it's the worst U2 song ever... WHAT??  It almost makes me wonder if my copy of HTDAAB contains a different song to everyone else's, because I can't fathom what would provoke that sort of reaction from people. Fair enough if the romance is lost on them, but I don't understand what's so very offensive about it.

Anyway, yes, it's probably my second favourite HTDAAB track after Love & Peace. I hardly know where to begin in describing how wonderful it is. The lyrics are absolutely *beautiful*, they get me right in the heart and it's like poetry. Bono's vocals are so pure and sweet and flawless, he sounds like he's really feeling it and believing every word. The lush melody just lifts your heart over and over again - I particularly love the way the notes keep jumping up and down in the second verse. The strumming of the guitars is oddly comforting, rather like In A Little While (my favourite from ATYCLB!), but there's also something that gives the song a slightly exotic feel. Edge's vocals are perfect as well, I still can't get over how well their voices combine during the second chorus (on the line "It makes me want to lose myself..."), and the falsetto bits are lovely. Oh god, there are just so many moments of pure perfection - it keeps on thrilling all the way to the end. *contented sigh*

I love every line and the way every line is sung. But my absolute favourite part is this:
"You can run from love
And if it's really love it will find you
Catch you by the heel
But you can't be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?
"
That is some of the most beautiful songwriting I've ever, ever heard, especially the last line - I love how that one is repeated right at the end. The first bit is similar to Never Let Me Go, but there's nothing wrong with being reminded of another gorgeous Bono ballad. :)

I'm just a hopeless romantic, and I'm in love with this song. Head over heels.

Also: it's a shame this song hasn't made it into the tour setlist. I blame that on them not having a clear "acoustic set" this time around - it would have worked perfectly there, along with Fast Cars perhaps. Apparently they rehearsed it a lot before the tour started, so I was very surprised and disappointed when it wasn't played at the shows (not that I really missed it when I saw them live, there was still plenty of great stuff!).

...I wanted to say something like that, but I tried to condense it and it instead came out as "Omglovethissongwowowowow!!1eleven!". :D

OH! And I forgot about Edge's vocals? How could I forget about Edge's vocals! Sigh, I love his voice.

Heheh!  I'm just glad someone else appreciates and loves this song as deeply as I do. It restores my faith in the human race a little bit. :p

I agree with everything you've said as I happen to think that "A Man and A Woman" is a vastly underrated gem of a song, but to give credit where credit is due, that last line was filched (consciously or not - I've no idea) from Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," which features the lyric "How can I hurt when holding you."

I really agree with you. This song is so sweet and lovely, I could never consider it filler. I think some people might because it's a bit out of sorts with the rest of the album, but that's what I like about it. After "All Because of You", it's this chill, down-beat, mid-tempo soul song which grooves nicely after you've had such a punching set of songs. And if all these songs you've mentioned are "fillers", then I guess I'm a "filler" lover, too...those are some of my favorite tracks on *all* of those albums, and I think they all hold the same distinction as "A Man and a Woman" - all are really good tracks that are just different than most of the rest of really great albums. I like that, because it keeps everything fresh. :)

Ah, I love this song! I must confess that the first time I heard it, the falsetto got me all confused, and I actually thought it was some girl they brought in to sing that bit. Then I listened to it again and could tell.

The lyrics are just beautiful, though. "How can I hurt when I'm holding you?" That's gold. The music is really smooth too. I just love it.

But of course, there's that awkward weird side of my brain that goes "OMG! He's written a song about how he's not going to cheat on his wife." And I freak a bit, because sometimes I start debating with myself over whether or not I'd want him to cheat on Ali with me @_@

"He's sooo sexy. But he's married! But god! Look at the way he moves! But he loves Ali!"

Right, I'll shut up now.

tihs is the one song that i listened to OVER AND OVER again when I first got the album. It was sent to our radio station about 3 weeks before it hit the stores, and I couldn't help but whore this song out. I'm always surprised to find people who hate this song! It's so beautiful!!!!

And although this isn't a *lyric*, it's still my favorite part of the song: right after Bono sings "Like a stray dog" he does the sexiest sigh- fuck. I die every time.

SOOOOO hot.

Okay, I don't think it's a "filler" but I just don't like this song.
I can't even pin it to a reason. I just don't. It's like...[tomorrow's song of the day].
I don't know why.

Even so, I think these two lines in particular are smartly written:
I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance

B-E-A-utiful.
And yay for the falsetto. XD

This was intially my favorite track. I eventually listened to it so much I got sick of it.

The lyrics are really what make the song.

Mature Love

(Link)
I think what I enjoy about this song is the maturity of it. It's a love song but all grown up. It isn't, 'I'll love you forever, babe, babe, babe...' but rather 'never take a chance on losing love to find romance'. It recognizes that lasting love must move beyond eros to a more agape type of acceptence. That and Bono's hot on on it and I like to think he wrote with Ali in mind. I want to believe in their relationship so much, I would hate it if they ever broke up or he cheated on her.... it be devestating.

Same here.

I just like to think it's not possible for him to cheat.
