// Lemon

Lemon
See-through in the sunlight
She wore lemon
But never in the daylight
She's gonna make you cry
She's gonna make you whisper and moan
And when you're dry
She draws her water from the stone

And I feel
Like I'm slowly, slowly, slowly slipping under
And I feel
Like I'm holding onto nothing

She wore lemon
To colour in the cold grey night
She had heaven
And she held on so tight

A man makes a picture
A moving picture
Through the light projected
He can see himself up close
A man captures colour
A man likes to stare
He turns his money into light
To look for her

And I feel
Like I'm drifting, drifting, drifting from the shore
And I feel
Like I'm swimming out to her

Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins

Lemon
See through in the sunlight
A man builds a city
With banks and cathedrals
A man melts the sand so he can
See the world outside, you're gonna meet her there
A man makes a car, she's your destination
And builds a road to run them on, you gotta get to her
A man dreams of leaving / She's imagination
But he always stays behind

And these are the days
When our work has come asunder
And these are the days
When we look for something other

Midnight is where the day begins / (Mmm-hi... oh)
Midnight is where the day begins / (Mmm-hi... hey)
Midnight is where the day begins / (Hey, won't you come in?)
Midnight is where the day begins / (Hey, won't you come in?)

Midnight is where the day begins / Midnight... hey there summer love
Midnight is where the day begins / Midnight... sound your pipe there pete
Midnight is where the day begins / Midnight... the day begins in love
Midnight is where the day begins / Midnight... is where the day begins

A man makes a picture
A moving picture
Through the light projected
He can see himself up close
A man captures colour / You're gonna meet her there
A man likes to stare / She's your destination
He turns his money into light / There's no sleeping there
To look for her / She's imagination

She is the dreamer / Lemon
She's imagination / She had heaven
Through the light projected
He can see himself up close / Heaven is tilting
She wore lemon

Are you sure you want to subject yourself to this?

I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG. So much so I dedicated half an hour to making this very icon for it. I can't say what's so grabbing. If it's falsetto!Bono or Edge's backing vocals, or the piano bits in the middle, or the strings, or the brilliant lyrics, or the beauty in the video, or the fact that its OMG 7 minutes long. Seven minutes in heaven indeed.
So after contemplating it thoroughly, this song is in my top 3 songs for U2 ever. It is the album itself.
This song puts me in such a great mood. I sing it to myself when I'm feeling down, I sneak it into my biking playlist and sing it at the top of my lungs, strange looks included. I play it for people and see if even for a smidget of a second they'll concur that the song is godly. My dad agrees (THIS IS U2?!?!?!?). But he refuses to listen to it after 2 minutes. I don't get. I seriously don't get. How can you not wait until at least the first chorus? The piano bit at least! (And yes, I play it for myself on the piano over and over and over again).
I first heard this song through the video and liked it, but didn't love it. Quite possibly cause it's so short. Most of the edits and remixes I've heard don't really do this song justice (I haven't heard them all though...). The video itself is amazing. It's two horns short of a Macphisto. It's also something I'd expect to find in an art museum. The video is inspired by Eadweard Muybridge's early photography. He basically created the first moving image. Interesting read. And yes, there are pictures to look at, lazy people.
There's something so hopeful about it's lyrical and musical value. It's a brief snapshot of mankind. That's really all we are. One second in an eternity of seconds.
A man makes a picture
A moving picture
Through the light projected
He can see himself up close

God! I can't even fathom this thought for too long before it can bring me to tears, I kid you not.
Lemon to me is the future. We are running so fast to get it that sometimes we forget to look at all we've accomplished. And most of the time, we forget to realize that this is only the beginning of our potential. There's so much more that we can do about everything, even if we do need to be in the dark to see it.
"Midnight is where the day begins"

Anyways, I could probably go on and on, but I don't think anyone would continue reading. ;) And I don't even care that this song has been done before.

Happy weekend!

Not bad. But another one of those U2 songs that definetly seems to be more popular among female U2 fans!

You are on my list.

Only half-joking. Okay okay, joking. I can completely see why some people hate/not like this song. It's definitely odd.

I love the way Bono sings "Lemon" and it echoes. I never realized that it echoed until last week.

I'm totally with you on this one. "Lemon" is just so...cerebral and unique. I'm always saddened when I hear people stopped being U2 fans when this song came out, because it just added more fuel to my fire. It's so interesting and kind of fearless to be so far removed from anything else they'd ever done. I love how liquidy the guitar sounds (as that's the only way I can describe it). The lyrics are phenomenal and I can't help but *always* think of Interview with the Vampire when I hear this song (odd, I know, but this song and that book are so similar to me).

And I'm so glad you mentioned Eadweard Muybridge. I was a film studies major in college and in our class the Evolution of Film Art, my professor showed us Muybridge's still photography on the first day (along with some other primitive film work from others). While we were watching, I was just sitting there grinning like an idiot playing "Lemon" in my head. I also remember they mentioned that as the source on the U2 edition of Pop-Up Video on VH1. :)

ARGH! Pop-Up Video!

I miss that so badly!!!!
I think the disappearance of Pop-Up Video is one of the reasons TV is so repulsive to me. Last I saw of it was in 2000.
:(
And I'm so glad you mentioned Eadweard Muybridge.
In all honesty, I cheated and took that from someone at songmeanings.net. I don't know the background story to most U2 songs and sometimes the people there post about it and I copy it so I have something interesting to say. Last year I learned about the whole Sweetest Thing/Ali from those people. Occasionally, they get it wrong:
I heard this song was written by Bono after he once cheated on his wife whilst on tour. I think the line 'You can sew it up but you still see the tear' shows that he's sorry for what he did and no matter what he does to make up for it there is still some 'scars' in their relationship. Don't know if it's true, but he clearly is trying eveything to say he's sorry.
I refuse to believe this is even possible.

Have you heard the Perfecto Mix?  I think that really is perfect-o. And the album version is already one of my two favourite U2 songs ever, so to actually improve on it is quite some achievement!

I quite like the Bad Yard Club Edit as well - I hated that one at first, but it grew on me a lot, mainly because of the "Alright... alright alright alright" bit at the end (so cool!). I agree though, most Lemon remixes are disappointing.

Live Lemon rules my world. *does a twirl, smiles devilishly*

Have you heard the Perfecto Mix?
Yes. It's alright. It doesn't do the album version justice though, IMO.
Haven't gotten to the Bad Yard Club Edit.

Ogh! Live Lemon! I wish. None came with the Complete U2 set. :(

This is one of my favorite songs on Zooropa, and is definetly my daughter's favorite (she's 8). The video is surreal, but really kind of funny.

I love the directors' commentary for that video on the Best Of DVD... especially when they say they should have included a caption for the scene with the Fly balancing on tiptoes, and called it "Man teetering". I laugh every time that bit comes on, now!

Btw, that's awesome taste for an 8-year-old!

I became a fan of U2 in 2000... naturally, All That You Can't Leave Behind was the album I had of theirs first. I bought The Best of 1980-1990 and, uh, apprehended my sister's copies of The Joshua Tree and Zooropa. To get to my point: "Lemon" was the song that got me hooked.

I was actually listening to it today (while shaving, actually) and... it's just so strange and so wonderful. The whole weirdness of the lyrics -- and especially the "A man..." sections -- I just love, the sound and falsetto, all that bizarre passion, the sudden cello and fade into melancholy that alters the entire feel... yeah. It's-a goooood.

It's weird and I love it.

I didn't get into U2 until toward the end of last year, however, Lemon was one of few U2 songs I remembered from my childhood. So I like Lemon, it's not one of my favourite U2 songs, but I can't hate it =P

I have the Pop-Up video on a disc somewhere, I'm sure of it. If I still have it, I'll upload it it and post it at u2usendit sometime next week. I'd do it sooner, but I'm in the process of moving. There is a small possibility I'd be able to get it up tomorrow morning though.

i can rave about all the U2 songs in the world- giving props to each and every wonderful detail about these songs, and nothing I can say will even come remotely close to the props that "Lemon" deserves.

Simply put, this song is amazing.

"Lemon" is definitely one of my favorites, too. I really like the "Bad Yard Club Mix," too. That one weighs in at just over ten minutes and you can really hear Edge in the background.

Dude, you've just made my day. And believe me, I was falling asleep a moment ago.

THIS SONG IS LOVE!

Ah my good god, there are no words. Not beyond what you said already, hehe. YES, the piano bit RULES ALL! It actually makes me happy AND sad at the same time (the whole song, I mean). It's just amazing. And I can't understand those who don't like it! It's just wrong.

This is seriously one of the best u2 songs. And I was listening to it just earlier!

GUH. *dies in a happy puddle of Lemon lurve*
