It is really none of my bees wax at all, but I am just curious as to why someone might want to take their name off?

to be honest? as a poor college student taking out loans that are going to e the death of me i've grown really apathetic to the plight of people in countries i'll never meet and honestly don't give a damn about. hearing bono ask for millions and millions of dollars to funnel into a continent that needs WAY mor than just money poured into it's economy and hearing these fat pigs in power give it to him kinda discourages my poor self. i really think the u.s. needs to concern itself with the problems it has here and now.

i realize this ounds apathetic, cynical and bitchy, but it's honestly how i feel. try to understand it fpor a minute from my pov before you choose to flame me or sway me (in case you do)

I love Bono, but I kinda agree with you. I've heard stories from my Irish friends, and see homeless people in Georgia everyday. We should clean up our own back yards, so to speak.

Sure, but you can't think of it as one person. Or one family. These are millions of families. Millions of people.

hearing bono ask for millions and millions of dollars to funnel into a continent that needs WAY mor than just money

I agree it takes more than money. That's cause the assholes at the U.N. don't give a damn about anything. The whole system is full of corrupt politicians lining their pockets with blood money. There's a reason why problems of such magnitude can or will never be solved. But it's who rules.
I can guarantee that at least 75% of the money given by the G8 will be given to the leaders of these countries who will more than likely use it for illicit purposes. It's a good thought that some might reach these families.

i really think the u.s. needs to concern itself with the problems it has here and now.

I think the main idea in the U.S. is to fix other people's problems to avoid the ones staring at us in the face. I think 2004 has a huge part of that guilt. Instead of bridging the gap between left and right, we stand our ground and stare at the ceiling. Neither side will move closer to the middle. It's sad but true. Distraction is the name of the game.
We'll catch up to our problems eventually. And when we do, we will probably need some outside help to set us straight. Probably a good reason to make friends right now then, right?

I'll understand your point of view, and even why you wouldn't want to be associated with the ONE campaign anymore. But I would caution you and anyone to look deeply into the issues you are signing up for BEFORE you sign up. You'll never know what kind of messes you can get into by just joining a herd.
Any kind of herd.

Neither flame nor sway - just curiosity.

I'm not a member of the ONE campaign. I never signed up nor do I wear the wristband.

I don't know about removing your name from the campaign, but if you are looking to have your name taken off the mailing list, there's an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of each e-mail they send you.

I'm sure you can just email one-at-data-dot-org and ask them to remove your name from the list. They can't keep your name on it if you explicitly ask them to take it off.

Just as a side note, I think you should have expected some people to want to debate you on this issue. It's your perogative to not support the ONE Campaign anymore, but there are a lot of people involved in this community who feel very passionately about it (myself included). And, honestly, your post does invite the question. My first reaction was, "Why would you want to?" But I'm not going to debate you if you don't want to defend your position; you no longer support it and that's that.

Now, to be fair, several people have in fact answered the question - see above.

I dunno - I thought most of the discourse here has been fairly civil and opinions have been respected, even if not everyone agrees.

That said, if you had wanted to avoid debate, perhaps the U2 community was not the most appropriate place to post a question which is obviously going to spark some curiosity, at least.

If the couple of suggestions as to how you get your name removed have not been satisfactory, maybe try e-mailing the ONE campaign? I'm sure they have some kind of contact address ... that might be the best way to avoid this kind of political snarkfest you're trying to avoid.

Good luck! :)

It's not a high horse I'm on.
I haven't even argued with you to stay on the ONE campaign. I fully support you to get off the list, especially if you no longer feel a connection with it. For God's sake, don't say you're a vegan if you just had a burger, right? I get you!

Maybe the majority of us didn't have an answer for you right away? As you can see above, someone, only a few hours later has already answered your question.

Christ...2 am.

Don't they have an email address on the website for information and stuff (too lazy to go look ;D)
Well, if they don't that's really stupid. I hate when sites like that don't have those.

I kind of agree with what you say, giving money won't resolve the problem, the money is propably used in corruption and stuff *wonders if that phrase made sense*
I'm in it for the debt cancellation.

One of the pillars of the campaign and DATA is to only send aid to countries that are: democratic and corrupt-free. Accountability is a VITAL part of the plan for Africa, one that more people need to realize.

Did you honestly expect to post that question here and NOT get a debate?
