Song of the Day @ 09:02 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: hot HOT. no a/c. 90°. longsleeves.
I'm currently hearin: Please - U2

Today's Selection is...

"If You Wear That Velvet Dress" from Pop

Image hosted by Photobucket.com This entire song is dripping with sex. I can certainly understand it when Edge said that when making Pop they kept everything that didn't sound like U2 in it and threw the rest out. This song is anything but U2 but it's gorgeous nonetheless. I feel like I should have a cigarette dangling from my mouth when I hear this song. It's just that kind of vibe.
I love how the bass really carries this song. Everything else kinda takes a backseat to the bass and Bono's sultry voice. This song is probably the equivalent to Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On." Yes? Agreeable? Of course it is.

//If You Wear That Velvet Dress

(Oh it's okay)

Tonight the moon is playing tricks again
I'm feeling sea sick again
The whole world could just dissolve
Into a glass of water

I've been good 'cause I know you don't want me to
Do you really want me to be blue as you
It's her daylight that gets me through

We've been here before
Last time you scratched at my door
The moon was naked and cold
I was like a two year old
Just wanted more

If you wear that velvet dress / If you wear that velvet dress
If you wear that velvet dress, if you wear that velvet dress

Tonight the moon has drawn its curtains
It's a private show
No one else gonna to know
I want you

(So you feel okay?)
(Are you sure it's okay?)
('Cause I want some more)

Sunlight, sunlight fills my room
It's sharp and it's clear
But nothing at all like the moon

It's okay, the struggle for things not to say
I never listened to you anyway
And I got my own hands to pray

But if you wear that velvet dress, if you wear that velvet dress
But if you wear that velvet dress, if you wear that velvet dress

Tonight the moon is a mirrorball
Light flickers from across the hall
Who'll catch the star when he fall

If you wear that velvet dress
Just so claudiathefish and I know for the future, how do you feel about reviews of Passengers' songs? Or remixes? Just a yay or nay in your comments should do it.

I'm going to be honest and say it's one I haven't quite got into yet. I listened to it a few times and I think what happened was I was expecting one thing in my mind and got something totally different. Which is no bad thing, except one day I have got to go back and try again, because I love most of Pop and your rec is making me want to like it for real!

PS I say yay to Passengers and remixes, cause they're all something different, eh? Even though lots of Passengers is barely songs, lol, but it's still a valuable piece (ignores Larry side of brain that doesn't quite agree)!

I never can be concise. :|

It's definitely one you have to be prepared for, cause it's not really U2. I listened to that album with no clue as to what was going to happen next (it was my third album) and I completely love it. Maybe it's better not to have any expectations at all?

Even though lots of Passengers is barely songs
I'm referring to the ones that have a considerable amount of U2 in it. :) I haven't even heard the entire album yet, just selected tracks.

Yeah, that's the thing - I LIKE the 'not really u2' stuff a lot. It makes me go 'YAY!' because they bend expectations and that's the mark of a really good band. There's only 3 songs on Pop I haven't really ended up loving and that's one, but I'm going to go back and try again and yeah, cut out my expectations ;)

I have the album! It's good background, I think. Which have you heard? You should definitely include Your Blue Room in reviews, I love that song (and Adam has a talky bit! YAY!). I like Beach Sequence too, Bono sings about 4 words and plays the piano, I mean how fab?!

LOL, I specifically meant "Your Blue Room." I didn't want to say that much to ruin the surprise for this week, but yeah.
SPOILED YOU ALL ARE!
I'll check out Beach Sequence right now.

Lmao! Um, ok, sorry I ruined it. *shuffles* Only cause I just had it on and then I was like 'AH! THIS!' and it all went downhill from there.

Here, have Edge as an apology. (I give good apologies.)

I'm writing a fic called Beach Sequence... how OT. But Edge stars in it!

lol, I know I know I'm weird:

I meant that as ::snogging Edge:: is so absolutely wonderful that I forget the past day and any and all problems that may have arisen.

Ah! Yeah that was my other option as to what you could have meant but I decided to indulge myself ;)

If you're weird, so am I, heh. Had a very interesting (aherm) Edge-y dream t'other day... :|

I could, but I don't feel like it. I like long complicated answers that I can read out and respond to individually.

I'm really curious about Passengers. I don't think I know any of the songs and the only thing I know about it is that Larry didn't like it.

So reviews about those songs would be nice or if anyone could fill me in anyway... ;)

I know zilch about it. (It was Brian Eno's idea, right?) I had no clue Larry was anti-Passengers either.
I'll try my best to study up before I post. ;)
And everyone who knows something about it, will contribute, right?

Some Larry!Passengers quotes

"Larry just didn't like it, cause we hardly let him play the drums." Bono decribing Larry during the Passenger's soundtrack recording.

"Thats what Passengers was....a soundtrack without a movie. Not Larry's favourite U2 album of all time..." - Edge

"A good reason to do passengers- get Larry to move out of the left side of his brainfor a minute.....Get him intosome artsy stuff." - Bono

And that's about all I know ;)

I love this song. It truly is one of the sexiest U2 songs- if not THE sexiest. Everything from the slow beat of the drums to the bass to Bono's whiskey voice just makes this one of the hottest songs. ever.

I actually just heard this song for the first time last week. They played it during a fireworks performance here in Vancouver, along with some Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. It was quite a shock, and it took me a minute or so to realise who it was!

It's a nice song, though. Very sexy vocals, as usual.

I wouldn't mind seeing the odd track from Passenger's. While it's not strictly U2, it still has its place amongst their discography. I for one want to see remixes reviewed!!!!

The beginning of this song is TEH SEX. Guh. Bono whispering? Bono speak-singing in that low range? Guh. GUH! He needs to utilize that end of his range more often. So, so sexy.

Live, I never felt the song worked. It lost all of its subtlety, and Bono sang the whole thing in his regular range, which made it unsexy. The only thing I liked about it live on the Popmart tour was the guitar transition between Discotheque and Velvet Dress.

YES to Passengers songs!
YES to remixes!
Anything goes, as long as it involves U2 (or even just one/some of the band members). That's what I reckon anyway.

On to If You Wear That Velvet Dress....

Re: what he's whispering at the start... I have read that it's more like "I wanna suck you", which is definitely what it sounds like!

I luuuurrrrve this song. I don't really need to point out how sexy it is, because everyone's already noticed. ;)  But yeah, it's so smooth and sleazy, perfect seduction music. It's not just the dress that's velvety... Bono's voice is too, and the whole song in general!  It wasn't one of my immediate favourites from Pop, but it's right up there now.

This is one of my favourite songs lyrically, it's so evocative. My absolute favourite lines are:
"Tonight... the moon is a mirrorball
Light flickers from across the hall
Who'll catch the star when it falls
".
Such gorgeous imagery!  I also like "The whole world could just dissolve into a glass of water". And then there are the really sexy lines. "I've been good, 'cos I know you don't want me to...", and of course:
"Tonight, the moon has drawn its curtains
It's a private show
No-one else gonna know... I'm wannnting
".
Guh!

It's such an atmospheric track. I like the way they restrained themselves with the music during the first couple of verses, just letting Bono's voice guide the song. And then it gets so dreamy later on - especially with the bass, which you mentioned. Mmmmm. Definitely a song to listen to with your eyes closed, or in a darkened room, maybe by candlelight...

Also - I don't think anyone's mentioned the backing vocals at the end of the song. I like those.

I *love* the big band version with Jools Holland as well. I seriously wasn't expecting it to work, as the original version is so perfect, but I was very impressed, not least because of Bono's amazing falsetto on it!  Maybe I'll wait to see if that version gets its own SOTD slot one day, before I go into too much detail here.

I never have liked this song; I don't think it's bad, just... boring. I think the problem is that I can never get past the part where Bono is whispering and you can't hear anything. It just never interested me.
I do like the verse:
Sunlight, sunlight fills my room
It's sharp and it's clear
But nothing at all like the moon
It's okay, the struggle for things not to say
I never listened to you anyway
And I got my own hands to pray

And of course the background vocals are lovely.
