U2 & Coldplay? @ 10:07 am

3sidedcircle:
I'm currently feelin: amused amused
I'm currently hearin: Coldplay: Kingdom Come

I don't know if any of you are not only U2 fans but also Coldplay fans BUT....

Is it just me or does the hidden track on Coldplay's new album X & Y (called Kingdom Come) kind of sound like something U2 (esp. Bono) would write & play?

I don't know...it's just something I came across & I wonder if anyone else agrees.

Thanks!

It actually sounds like something Johnny Cash would write and play. Which he did. Well, he wrote it but died before he got to finish it.

Really? Wow...

How the hell did Coldplay of all bands get their hands on it...?

I haven't a clue. Though I must admit, I do like how they arranged and orchestrated it.

Ah wait. Google informed me I was misinformed (don't trust your drunken friends!). It was written by Coldplay for Johnny Cash. He died before they finished the vocals. Though, they did get his style quite accurately.

Ooooooh...gotcha. Yeah, that makes a bit more sense. It is a lovely song, and you're right about it having a very Johnny Cash feel to it. One of the things I loved about Johnny Cash (aside from just being generally amazing of course) was how he embraced all types of music from all ages of artists. One of my favorites is his cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage".

And who can forget "Hurt"? It still makes me get goose bumps.

When I first heard this song (like the day or two after the album dropped) I started to look online for the Johnny Cash version of this song because I was so convinced that this wasn't Coldplay's original song. I couldn't find anything. But that night my friend told me the what I originally posted and it all made sense. Well, except that it was wrong. hehe.

OOOhhh....so thats it! Yeah it sounded a bit different. But it makes sense...it is very Johnny Cash-ish.

But the title...i don't know. First thing that reminded me of U2

Oh, man. Absolutely amazing, but goes without saying. Now I listen to the original Nine Inch Nails version and (as great as it is), it's just not as chilling and heartbreaking as Johnny Cash's cover. Something so profound about those lyrics being sung by a man facing his own mortality.

I always felt that way too! I'd listen to it and could completely hear Bono singing it. However, now that I know it was written for Johnny Cash, I really wish we could have heard *him* sing it :( It's such a pretty song.

At the Dublin show they said it was written for Johnny Cash... so I guess there's that connection...

To me it's really reminiscent of the stuff they were writing around Rattle and Hum for other people...

I was watching something on tv- not sure what really- but I remember how Chris Martin was saying that they have a poster of U2 up in the studio where they recorded some of their music. It helps to keep them focused as a band- or something like that.

Coldplay

I have heard several different things regarding this... The main one seems to be that Coldplay looked up to U2 as a peer! It seems that they respected what U2 has done and are trying to duplicate it in there own unique way. What about that song makes you ask this question?

Just about everything really...the lyrics, the chords, and especially the title: Kingdom Come.
It just yelled out U2 to me when i heard it.
But now that i know...i can defintely hear Johnny Cash sing this song.

I agree with what you are saying and many others have said the same thing! Knowing that Coldplay looks up to U2 for motivation or how to do the music thing well, I am not surprised... I have also heard that they have borrowed music, chords, and ideas from U2. Could this really be true? I don't know! Personally, I think it is the ultimate compliment to try and emulate another band, especially one as influential as U2 has been over the years...

Kingdom Come and much of the X & Y album is a very good in any sense regardless of the origins or the influence. That is what it comes down to.

Kingdom COme doesn't really remind me of U2, but some of X&Y does. There are lots of parallels between "Square One" and "Zoo Station", for example. :)
