"Sometimes" question @ 07:45 pm

hbpen:
Not that it makes a jot of difference for how beautiful the song is...

But has the public been told if Bono's dad ever got to hear "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own"?

Considering they didn't even get the album version until after the entire album was taken apart and redone again, I doubt it.

Though, Bono may have shared the lyrics or sung/hummed it to him at some point in time.

Well, they clearly weren't in the studio until long after his father had passed. But Edge said that they weren't even going to put it onto the album until it like accidentally fell into place.

And after writing it I think Bono said he tucked it away. So I know it wasn't ever actually played so his dad could hear, it what I meant. But whether he ever heard/read the lyrics I don't think they've disclosed.

....But his father wouldn't have heard it at that time?

And I think, something like that. There was a lot of lyric change between then and the album version, though. So, with him, who knows that he was actually singing.

My thought is that, if Bono sung it as his funeral, it may have been written before his death, so Bono may have sung it for him (or let him read it).

Wait. You didn't know it was written before he died?

I kinda assumed, but my question is more basicly I guess, just did Bono's dad ever hear/read this song about him?

Bono wrote the song one night while he was visiting his father in the hospital a few weeks before he died. And now that I think about it, I want to say he did mention showing the lyrics to his dad.

But, what he wrote that night has been changed and rearranged a good bit from what we got off the album. And it didn't have music or any actual song sense until they went to the studio after the Elevation tour, which would be after his father died.

As for the song he sung at the funeral, it could have been some version of 'Sometimes' but it's not one we'll ever get to here.

I just hope Bono got to let his dad hear/see some of what he wrote. And I hope that his dad got to hear/read it too.

Yeah. Though really, I kind of wish we didn't hear it. It's very much Bono's. But, in that sense he can do with it what he wants, you know?

And I'm thinking, now that I'm actually thinking, that his dad did actually get a look at the lyrics at some point. I'm going to have to go in search, now, heh. But I think he did.

That's what's so great about the U2 canon. The songs are so personal for the guys, but universal enough for the audience. Like SYCMIOYO and Kite make me think about one of my good friends that was moved away from me (work-wise, which made it difficult to keep in touch), but I still know they're about Bob.

I'm sure he hears him loud and clear every time Bono hits that note.

Bear in mind there's been a song called "Tough" floating around for years, since before ATYCLB came out. It was always said to be about Bono's dad, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was an early version of Sometimes.

We know that the "SYCMIOYO" title was already in place when they sang it at the funeral, so I expect it will have been similar or identical to the old version that was released in the iTunes package. The more personalised lyrics (reference to Cedarwood Road, etc) might back up that theory, though obviously I'm just guessing.

Yeah, but Edge said that the version Bono walked in with for the first go-round of HTDAAB got changed just as much lyrically as it did musically. And it was so warped musically, for awhile, that they were almost not going to use it.

Though, really, I wouldn't be surprised if Bono had it floating around for decades. But what he put to paper for his father and what he put on an album for us? I honesly think there are some big pieces that are different.

i remember many of the lyrics showing up in the newspapers in dublin after the funeral, so at least some large chunks were the same. and i think it's on the dvd that came with the album where steve lillywhite says that he came to bono going, 'same old problem - no chorus!' and bono wrote it on the spot. so that, at least we know, came much later.

Bono's Dad and SYCMIOYO

(Link)
First, let me say "I don't know!" Second, I am going to make a statement that can apply to whatever belief system Bob (Bono's dad) believed, as well as your own.

Personally, I think that "Yes!" He has heard it in some sense... Regardless of if it was here on Earth when he was alive or up in Heaven (remember what I said) now in his happy afterlife.

Does it really matter? Again I say that it doesn't because this song is awesome and you can feel the connection as well as the emotion in Bono with this song when he sings it. Especially, if you watch/hear it live or ever get to see the video...

Well, I do believe Bono snippeted an early form of SYCMIOYO (the first verse at least) at the first Slane show on 25 August 2001, and his father passed away on 21 August 2001, so there is a possibility Bob Hewson heard it.
