Hello Hello!!

Introductions to U2 @ 12:01 am

lumencuro:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: U2 - (Place your favorite song here.)

OK, so I have been reading and posting to many of my fellow U2 fans journals, and being as big of a fan of them as I am, I thought this is the perfect place to ask a few questions...

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?

5) What bank member do you like most and Why?

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?

I ask because of several reasons. The main one is that I have been asked and had to explain my U2 'relationship' to others that wonder why I talk about them so much as well as so highly. So, I was hoping to hear other fan's feedback on the subject.

Finally, I wish to thank everyone in advance that participates in this 'survey.' Please do not feel that you have to answer everything but the more information I can get together the better! So, again "Thank you!"

1) Mysterious Ways, it would play on the radio that the "older kids" had at the park I went to.

2) Until The End of the World - the English major wannabe in me loved music that was so referential, yet so personal.

3) For UTEotW it was the Edge/Bono bullfight on the Slane DVD. What a kickass live band! And their albums aren't half-bad either. ;-)

4)The fact that they have changed. These days everyone stays the same, doesn't grow, and that's why they fade so fast.

5)Edge - I like the quiet one in the corner, that likes to learn the science behind everything.

6) Tampa, FL and not a whole heck of a lot. 'Tis why I'm in love with me iPod.

I do agree that U2 and their ability to redefine themselves is a part of their success! Have you seen the live yet? Yes, the Edge does need to know his stuff, but he can be also be very funny when people actually get him to talk and share stuff about the band or himself... I have added you as a friend.

1) Impossible to tell
2) Staring At The Sun. I remember I had got U2s best of 1990-2000 as a present and so I was listening to them and doing some other stuff the same time until this song started playing...i was hooked. Id say with this song it was love at first hearing. I had liked U2 before (One, Beautiful Day, Stuck) but this song made me a fan.
3)the lyrics, the melody. Everything. Although I have to admit this song isnt really that much a favourite of mine anymore as Ive got to know more of their music and there are many better songs. But I still like it anyways. How could I not...
4)Well, I might be a little too young to answer this question cos I havent been a fan that long but for me U2 is the only band that has both meaningful lyrics and great music behind it. There`s no other band like them.
5)Bono. I truly respect and admire this man.
6) Im from Estonia. Id say we have 2 radio stations that play U2 every day. One of them has a certain playlist of their songs (Sweetest Thing, With Or Without You, Still Havent Found +the current single). They rarely play anything else. But from the 80s radio station Ive even heard Desire (twice) and Angel Of Harlem being played.

Being as that you are outside of the United States, I am curious, does U2 (or even Bono) have a reputation of any sorts the area that be different than expected based on the US media reports of him? It is OK to be a newer fan and just not know things yet... You will learn to love them in so many ways that it is amazing and I hope you are ready for the fun ride ahead! 1. With or Without You

2. Can't remember. Probably "Acrobat."

3. The bass line reminded me of The Cure's "Burn," which I had an inordinate fondness for.

4. Well, I've only been über-obsessed with them since las tOctober, though I've been mildly fond of them for years. I've been obsessed because...well, I don't know why. Sorry. :P

5. Larry. It's the rear end that does it for me.

6. Vancouver. U2's been getting a lot more airplay with the release of HTDAAB. There's one station that goes way back with its U2 airplay and plays stuff like "I Will Follow." It makes me happy.

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing? - New Year's Day.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2? - i loved NYD when i heard it, but I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For sealed the deal.

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2? - in NYD, i think it was Bono's "yeeeeeeeaaaah!" in the beginning that hooked me into the rest of it. and ISHFWILF is just a great song, and i loved it even more when i saw the music video.

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years? - because they're U2. freaking amazing.

5) What band member do you like most and Why? - i love them all equally for what they contribute to the band, but i'd probably have lots of sex with Edge if i could. ♥

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area? - i'm in a suburb near Philadelphia, PA. the songs i hear most on the radio around here are ISHFWILF, With or Without You, and NYD.

Being near Philly did you go to the Live8 show that was there recently? I do agree that ISHFWILF is a great song to get hooked to and begin to like them. Both songs you talked about (ISHFWILF and New Year's Day) are great! One of the local radio stations here at 12:01am on New Year's Day played New Year's Day and it was so awesome especially at that exact moment... I have added you as a friend.

1. "With or Without You," when I was eight. I didn't like it then -- I think it was too weird for me.

2. I think it was "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses", actually, which is odd because that's probably not even in my top 20 U2 songs now.

3. Um, some of it might have been that Bono was sexy in the video -- sad to say, I was that shallow. Most of the rest of it was the guitars; I don't think I'd heard anything that sounded like it before.

4. I love that they change; it makes me want to own all their albums. With bands that don't change, you really only need one or two CDs to get the point.

5. I like them all, but I really admire Bono for the way he uses his celebrity to promote social justice.

6. D.C. area, and a fair amount.

It is amazing how time can change the way we view things, songs, or bands over the course of time... Yes, U2 has changed many times and it makes them so refreshing to listen to, over and over! 1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?

The Sweetest Thing.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?

Sunday Bloody Sunday.

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?

The drumbeat, the power of the lyrics, the general... intensity of it all and the passion. This was a COOL song.

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?

The very fact that they HAVE changed and evolved and haven't stayed the same band--as much as I dream about a Joshua Tree 2, it would be wrong if it happened. Although I'm not the biggest fan of their last two albums, I agree that there are masterpieces on them.

5) What bank member do you like most and Why?

I am a sucker for Bono, it's true. Rattle and Hum Bono...

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?

Boston, and tons. :D

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?
The first one I heard knowing it was U2 was Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me (I remember seeing the video on Top Of The Pops). But when I started buying U2 albums I realised I was familiar with some of their older songs too - With Or Without You, One, etc.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?
Heh, I didn't like HMTMKMKM or Discotheque when they came out!  I did quite like Staring At The Sun and Sweetest Thing, but I didn't become a U2 fan until 1999. I decided to buy the Best Of 1980-1990 & B-Sides, and was fairly impressed by it, but I wasn't fully hooked until I bought Achtung Baby. That whole album completely blew my mind, I can't really narrow it down to one song (though I did think One was the best track on there, and it remains my favourite U2 song to this day).

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?
If you have to ask why Achtung Baby hooked me, you'll never be on my wavelength. ;)  The awesomeness speaks for itself.

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?
The evolution of U2 is one of the things that *makes* them the greatest band in the world. They can dabble in such varied genres and prove themselves to be excellent in all of them. Which means there's a U2 song for pretty much every mood!

5) What band member do you like most and Why?
Bono. He's just amazing in so many ways. I like the charisma and the charm (and the voice and the looks!). The other band members are great too, but come on, there's a reason why Bono is the frontman.

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?
Poole in Dorset, England. I don't listen to my local radio station because it's awful (they only play the absolute worst pop and dance rubbish in the charts), but Virgin Radio is pretty good. They don't play anywhere near as much U2 as they did when I first tuned in - back in '99 you could hear five or six different U2 songs per day, spanning the decades - but they do love U2 and probably play them more than other UK radio stations do.

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?

Mofo, live at a Popmart concert.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?
Where the Streets Have No Name, live at the same concert

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?
It was just..perfection

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?
I stick with them because they have evolved. My whole love for them stems from their multifaceted sounds. I love that I can go from Unforgettable Fire to Zooropa and it's SO different, but it's SO similar.

5) What bank member do you like most and Why?
I used to be a Bono girl when I was younger, but I really like them all

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?
Tennessee. They get a moderate amount of playtime on Classic rock, alternative, and even the oldies stations.

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?

Probably "With or Without You". I knew I had heard it before 1994, when it was used in Friends, cause I knew the lyrics. Not to mention I was/am a huge 80's fanatic. Even then.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?

Probably "Beautiful Day". I bought my first cd ATYCLB after that song came out. (To be honest, I owe it to another "band" for getting me into U2. Backstreet Boys. They were all nominated for the same Grammys and as they were being interviewed Kevin was like, "I know we aren't going to win. U2 will take us. U2 is such a great band, they really deserve it" or something to that effect).

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?
I just remember loving the video and the song in general. Back in the middle school ages, I went to a "ghetto" middle school and rock was passe I suppose. I was into a lot of hip hop and rap at the time. U2 was something fresh for me. I didn't even know that they had a 90's era!

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?

Well I haven't really been a fan that long. ATYCLB and HTDAAB are pretty much the same brand of U2. The rest of the music I just generally accept for being so great. I'm into all types of music, so really anything goes for me.

5) What band member do you like most and Why?

Edge. For all the obvious reasons. He's a musical prodigy, he shreds like no one else (ex- THE FLY) and he plays so many instruments so well. Plus he's a general cutie. <3

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?

Miami, FL. Next to none. I heard SYCMIOYO one time at 3 am. But besides that its either WoWY or ISHFWILF on the 80's stations. I heard Pride and WTSHNN on the same station over the weekend once.

Being a big 80s fan must have been an advantage once you realized that you really liked U2! Have you been to a concert yet? Edge as The Fly and Bono as McPhisto both are so funny and so 'them' at the same time... I just hope that as a new fan they continue to reward and amaze you.

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing?

"Lemon" from the video... it was on either MTV or VH1 in 1993. I remember seeing the grid pattern from the video..and thinking "now that looks cool..". Its funny though.. my fav lyric (the way it's sung) comes from this song. 'Midnight is where the day begins'.

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2?

"Discotheque".

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2?

The dance sound of "Discotheque" grabbed me instantly. It was right at the time when I was REALLY getting into dance-oriented music... synthpop, ebm, gothic, etc... and I also loved rock. It was the perfect mix of both. I saw the video..and was like DAMN who is that in the green shirt.. LOL.

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years?

The evolution of their sound IS a huge reason. There is NO one else who has gone thru as many changes as U2 has over the course of their career, and STILL manage to sound like the same band (and do it quite well). The way their songs move me..it just can't be explained. Bono's voice, Edge's guitar, etc... it all meshes together perfectly.

5) What bank member do you like most and Why?

Bono. He's God. lol... Seriously though... he's got the stamina of 50 Mack Trucks and he still has even more power to unleash. He's incredible. He's SO passionate about what he believes in, what he feels, etc. He's got pride in where he came from, what he does, and where he's going. He is truly my mentor from the way he lives his life. His voice? Holy shit. There is NO other voice like Bono. Chris Martin? To hell w/ the hype about him or WHOEVER else. There will NEVER be another Bono. NEVER. One syllable is all it takes from his mouth to give me goosebumps. Charismatic. WOW. But yes, Bono is my fav...my inspiration (to say the least). Edge? He's the scientist. ;) He's badass.

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area?

I'm FROM Texas... and U2 got a favorable amt of play in most of the larger cities (yes even in Waco where I resided). I now live in the Nashville, TN area. U2 gets a fair amt of play here too... usually on 3 stations (mostly around touring time, I've noticed).

1) I had probably heard others before, but the first one that sticks in my mind is Even Better Than The Real Thing. It was their single at the time, and it was getting big airplay, plus the video was on all the time.

2) Songs actually. I already owned Achtung, Baby! so I liked them, but I was on a field trip and I borrowed a friend's tape of various U2 songs to listen to on my walkman during the trip, and the tape had Streets, Still Haven't Found..., and With or Without You on it in order, and they were the most sublime songs I had ever heard. I loved them from that time on. I swear, the first three songs of The Joshua Tree would make anyone who hears them a U2 fan.

3) As I said, the songs were just sublime, so complete. Exciting and heartbreaking, pulse-raising and mellowing all at once. They just rang in your head.

4) Two things make me stick with U2: a)No matter what the style, their music always reaches me in some way, whether through music or lyrics. The music always has value for me. b) Their live performances. No matter what they are playing, I would never miss out on the chance to see them live, for as long as they tour.

5) I like all of the band members for different reasons. But if we're talking about personality, I'd say Bono. The reason being he's so very uncool. By that, I mean that he's never afraid to show passion, emotion, excitement, and those things tend to be the antithesis of "cool" in today's world. I think being passionate is what makes life worth living, so I admire Bono for being so publicly passionate.

6) I'm from Toronto, Canada and U2 gets loads of play on several radio stations in this area. U2 is huge here (they're doing four shows in Toronto in the fall), plus the variety in their music means they have tons of cross-genre appeal. So they're on the alternative station, the classic rock station, the top 40 station, and the mix station.

Fun survey! :)

1) What was the very first U2 song that you remember hearing? "Mysterious Ways" (I was 6 when the song came out)

2) If different than #1, what song convinced you that you liked U2? "Beautiful Day"

3) Name something about the song in #2 (or #1, if applicable) that hooked you on U2? well, when I heard "With or Without You" for the "first time" at 15 (right when I started liking them in 2000), I knew I had to get The Best of and The Joshua Tree. And from then on, that's all I could listen too. "Beautiful Day" had me hooked more on the fact that I liked U2 as a band (such as their political involvement) and I saw them perform the song on TRL and I thought that they were a good band so I won't switch the channel. It's quite confusing how I got hooked actually....

4) What makes you stick with U2 even though they have changed or evolved over the years? well I've only been a fan for 5 years which isn't much compared to how long they've been around...but I like that when they did evolve, their music was still good.

5) What bank member do you like most and Why? I like Larry because he started the band basically and he says the funniest things ^_^ But I love all the members <3

6) Where are you from and how much radio airplay does U2 get in your area? Tallahassee, FL and they don't really get much airplay unless it's a classic rock station or one of those 80s, 90s and today stations.

1) I will Follow (won't say when because I'm dating myself)

2) Live version of Bad. I hated it in the beginning until I heard it on the radio once and actually sat there and listened to it. And then when I saw them perform it on Live Aid I was in complete awe. After that I started to buy their stuff and yes Unforgettable Fire and Under a Blood Red Sky where the first albums I bought from them.

3) It's so mezmerizing.

4) The never cease to push the envelope and keep my interest even if it's something I don't like. They're not afraid of change.

5) Bono for his heart and his persistence in doing what he believes in. And he's damn sexy...LOL.

6) Los Angeles, CA. They play them alot here especially on KROQ, 103.1 and KLOS.

1) Pride. I remember singing along to it with my sister and when Bono would sing "One man caught on a barbed wire fence" we'd bo go "ouch", we were dumb.

2) It would have to be Where The Streets Have No Name. I had just started getting into U2 when I heard it covered by a band at this concert thing we had at our church, and I realized how much I loved this song.

3) The intro to Streets just amazes me. If heaven has sound, this is what it sounds like.

4) Anything that these guys do just works, they have definitely proved that with all the changes they've made through the years.

5) I'm and Edge girl. The guys got so much talent and intelligence, plus humor and just plain cuteness.

6) I'm from Los Angeles, and they get a fair amount of play here. There's about 4 stations you can catch them on sometime during the day.
