Song Of The Day @ 11:47 am

I'm currently feelin: content content
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Zoo Station

Today's Selection is...

“Zoo Station” from Achtung Baby.

Wow, what a way to start an album, and also, a new U2 era. Despite its brilliance, I often think that this song gets overlooked in favour of some of the other, more familiar amazing songs on Achtung Baby. One of my closest friends hates this song, and I’ve never been able to understand why.

The music for this song is just so… different, so original. I love how, at the beginning of the song, quietly in the background, the sound of an underground train can be heard. I don’t normally like distorted vocals, but they really work in this song. Also, I love the high pitched, very distorted vocals, or whatever they are, in the middle of the song, behind the “alrights”. And of course the lines “Time is a train/ Makes the future the past/ And leaves you standing in the station/ Your face pressed up against the glass…” with The Edge’s vocals. So cool.

I'm ready
I'm ready for the laughing gas
I'm ready
I'm ready for what's next
I'm ready to duck
I'm ready to dive
I'm ready to say
I'm glad to be alive
I'm ready
I'm ready for the push, uh huh

In the cool of the night
In the warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling around
On my hands and knees, yeah

(Just down the line) Zoo Station
(Make a little life) Oh, Zoo Station

I'm ready
I'm ready for the gridlock
I'm ready... to take it to the street
I'm ready for the shuffle
Ready for the deal
Ready to let go of the steering wheel
I'm ready
Ready for the crush

(Just down the line) Zoo Station
(Work all the time, overtime) Zoo Station

Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright
Hey baby, hey baby, hey baby, hey baby
It's alright, it's alright

Uh huh, you can turn it up

Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station

Your face pressed up against the glass

I'm just down the line from your love / Zoo Station
You know I'm under the sign... (of your love) / Zoo Station
I've gotta make it on time, make it on time / Zoo Station
Please go with me, let's make it on time
Gonna be there... (my love) / Zoo Station
That's alright, we made it / Zoo Station
I'll board for your love, just two stops down the line from your love / Zoo Station
Just a stop down the line...

Not a favorite of Achtung Baby, I skip it half the time.

I'm going to have to get used to it though, since they've been playing it as an encore in most shows. It would probably feel a little out of place for me. Oh well.

This is definitely my favorite on Achtung Baby. The best line is "I'm ready for the gridlock"- I just love the way Bono sings it- it's so powerful and forced out.

The drums in this song are amazing...and of COURSE the guitar work leaves me wanting nothing more than to listen to "Zoo Station" over and over again.

Well clearly, as I am having a torrid affair with Achtung Baby, I adore this song. You can't listen to AB without it (or any of them, really) and it's a great song to kick things off with. I used to think it didn't really fit in with the rest of the tracks to make the concept work but I realised that it does, because it's 'ready for what's next' and sets the scene, if you like, for the rest of the album. And it's been fab seeing it live at the concert because I love all the AB stuff and anything was very welcome! :D

One of the best openings to an album ever!

U2 is very good at picking openers for albums: "WTSHNN" for Joshua Tree being the ultimate; "A Sort of Homecoming" from Unforgettable Fire being another huge favorite of mine; "I Will Follow" from Boy--kick-ass!

"Discoteque", "Beautiful Day", "Vertigo" also are good openers.

"Zooropa" is a grower.

This song kicks so much ass, I can't even tell you. It also needs to be played very, very loud.

Mmmmmmmm, Zoo Station... I can't describe just how much this song means to me. I love it so so so so much!

As you've already said, a fantastic way to open the album (but then, I'm struggling to think of any U2 album that *didn't* have a great opener), and the intro is like a musical representation of U2 kicking their way into the 90s!  I can't imagine why anyone would dislike the song, it's mind-blowing. Listening to Zoo Station was probably the moment I became a true U2 fan... and when I saw it live in June this year, especially at Twickenham 2, it was quite possibly the greatest moment of my entire life. It was a big enough surprise that they decided to resurrect the song at all - it was so closely associated with the ZooTV tour that I didn't think they would use it for any other tour. But the biggest surprise was the way they did it. I have worshipped the Sydney video since my fandom began, and my one great sadness was that I never got to see that tour (too young and stupid at the time). I never dreamed that in the year 2005 I would actually get to see that classic ZooTV opening in person after all... oh my god, it was the *ultimate* thrill!  I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it...

As for individually naming the best bits of the song - bloody hell, what *doesn't* rock about it?  I've mentioned the intro already, but it's worth saying again how indescribably kickarse it is. I can't listen to it without staggering around like The Fly. *g*  I love how it starts off with just that crunching guitar, and then the drums gradually build up until a solid rhythm is established. I'm dancing like a fool by this point. Then the lovely "Oooohh ohhhhh..." vocals come in, and then HELL YEAH, distorted Bono! "I'm ready..." - I find this song gives me so much energy and positivity, which aren't things I normally possess much of. (It's *so* good for waking me up in the mornings, I used to play it to drag myself out of bed for school!)  I just can't pick any favourite parts because everything about the song is so perfect. The "uh-huh" at the end of the first verse... the chorus... the way he sings "I'm ready for the shuffle / Ready for the deal"... the "Alright" / "Hey baby" section... the "Uh-huh, you can turn it up!"... the "Time is a train..." verse... the final "Just a stop down the line"... everything, dammit!  It's just one of their coolest songs ever. And yeah, it does have to be turned up LOUD!

I also love it for the fact it's a weird random song inspired by a German train station. You certainly couldn't accuse it of being in any way clichéd or unoriginal!

Ahh, Zoo Station has always been an essential part of my fandom. It opens my favourite album of all time, and it was the biggest highlight of the best show I've ever seen. The only reason I don't count it among my very favourite U2 songs is because there's so much damn competition for that title! :)
