Song of the Day @ 11:55 am

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: amused amused
I'm currently hearin: EL-E-VA-TION!

Today's Selection is...

"El-e-va-tion" from All That You Can't Leave Behind

"Melodic Speed"

Image hosted by Photobucket.comThis song is seriously a pick-me-up kind of song. Everything from the whooo! whooo! to moles digging in holes. The bridge part in this song used to be so horrible for me for some reason, but I've really learned to love it. Really really love it. I love that there are two voices there singing it and they don't really match up but it sounds excellent anyways. It's my favorite part of the song now because of how it stops and builds right back up to where it used to be. It goes from like 0-60 in 2 seconds! Musically, the winner is the background acoustic guitar that's barely noticable but it really adds something to the lead distorted guitar. (It starts at :52, you can really hear it if you listen to the left earphone only). Is it Edge? Is it Bono? I have no clue. I'm guessing cause I don't have my booklet with me. :P
The lyrics are anything you want and nothing you can concieve of.

//Elevation

(Yeah Yeah)

High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse, you elevate my soul

I've got no self-control
Been living like a mole now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

(Ah)
(Shake it out, and you slip it in your pocket)
(Ah, how long, how long)

A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you could educate my mind
Explain all these controls
I can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation

A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

Love, lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you / (This is what they do best)

A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...

Thanks be to whoever made this!

Misc: The video for this song is actually the Tomb Raider Mix and not the real song. And didn't Edge say he got really dizzy filming that video? I seem to remember a quote of his where he says, "The things I do for rock 'n roll" or something to that effect. Hehe.

I *think* it may have been dushkology who made that a bajillion years ago. Or a higher quality one - I'll have to check when I get home ;)

(Was) a great song. Really loved it when the album first came out, but now I kind of find it weak. Still love the video for it. Pretty much the only reason why I bought the first Tomb Raider movie.

Ah, I loved this song the first time I heard it, on a bus to North Carolina. Especially loved the bridge, for some reason.
Heehee, winky!Edge. He's just the cutest thing.

I LOVE this song. It's so fun and bouncy, and is so fun to hear live. I don't get why people bother complaining about the dumb lyrics. Are they not allowed to have songs that aren't all serious and heavy? Sheesh!

This is the song that turned my 4 year old foster brother onto U2. Whenever someone says "Woohoo!", he thinks they are singing elevation and starts running around the house singing "El-a-bay-shun! Woohoo!"

Off the bat, my favorite song off "All That You Can't Leave Behind." I prefer the album version to the Tomb Raider version.

Yay, Winky!Edge!

Much Elevation love here too. My favourite track from ATYCLB along with In A Little While, and I think the *only* song that I loved all the way from the 30-second previews to the finished product. I still remember listening to the live Radio 1 session they did about a week before the album came out - Elevation absolutely blew me away!  Definitely one of the best things they've done this decade (ermm... along with the whole of HTDAAB *g*).

Ooh, it's one of those songs where you hardly know where to start in describing what you love about it!  I guess the intro is a good place to begin. ;)  How can you not love this song from the moment you hear that distinctive crunchy guitar riff?  Then Bono comes in with that "Yeah, yeah... Whoo-oo! Whoo-oo-oo!" and anyone with a pulse is already bouncing like a lunatic. It's the most irresistible tune!  Hardly surprising that it works so well in concert... it's the perfect song to get everyone jumping and singing along. I'm so glad it survived into the current tour (although it's quite annoyingly done this time around, with all the teasing and messily dragging it out!).

This is a song that just sounds great. Pleasing to the ears and soul. :)  There are so many fun elements bubbling through it... the various guitar sounds, and those little sonar blips, among other things. I like the way different remixes emphasise some of the layers that you might not have noticed before. The bridge is gorgeous, it sounds like you're suddenly underwater or something. In fact, that wrenching guitar conjures up an image of someone desperately striving to reach the surface before they run out of air, and the huge splattering of drums is the sound of them bursting out of the water... damn that would have made a good video! :p

I think the lyrics are brilliant. OK, so maybe "A mole digging in a hole" is a bit juvenile, but who the fuck CARES when it's so enjoyable to sing?  I think it's really nice how all the words and rhymes flow together, the song has a very catchy rhythm to it that I find impressive. I think my favourite lines are probably this whole verse:
"A star, lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you could educate my mind
Explain all these controls
Can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation.
"
It's just beautifully structured, I don't think I could write anything that tripped off the tongue so neatly!  And of course there's that inspired chorus - there's nothing like being in a roomful (or stadium full) of people all screaming "E-LE-VA-TION!" together. :D

As far as I've noticed, the main difference between the album version and the single mix is the way it comes to an end - the album version is missing that aggressive guitar solo. I like both versions, though, I don't have a major preference either way. It's quite fun just to hear Bono do the "Elevation... Elevation... Elevation... Elevatio-on" bit. :)

And didn't Edge say he got really dizzy filming that video? I seem to remember a quote of his where he says, "The things I do for rock 'n roll" or something to that effect.

I dunno, but I remember another funny Edge quote about that video. I think the interviewer was asking about all the crazy storylines and special effects and stuff, and Edge commented that the most unlikely thing about the video was the fact that Bono was seen grocery shopping. *g*  Awesome video. I was disappointed that Evil U2 didn't seem more... evil... but the bits with Edge and Lara are pure genius!  I haven't seen it in ages, I should dig it out sometime and watch again.

This is the song that really prompted me to ask for ATYCLB for Christmas, and subsequently got into U2. So I love it! Like everyone has said, it's so energetic and.....enthused, really. I screamed when they started it at the concert I went to (5-17-05), I've always wanted to hear it live! I headbanged like a mofo. ;)
